Interactions between Charged Particles with bathing Multivalent Counterions: Experiments {\it vs} Dressed Ion Theory

We compare the recent experimentally measured forces between charged colloidal particles, as well as their effective surface potentials (surface charge) in the presence of multivalent counterions in a bathing monovalent salt solution, with the predictions of the dressed ion theory of strongly charged colloidal systems. The benchmark for comparison is provided by the DLVO theory and the deviations from its predictions at small separations are taken as an indication of the additional non-DLVO attractions that can be fitted by an additional phenomenological exponential term. The parameters characterizing this non-DLVO exponential term as well as the dependencies of the effective potential on the counterion concentration and valency predicted by the dressed ion theory are well within the experimental values. This suggests that the deviations from the DLVO theory are probably caused by ion correlations as formalized within the dressed ion theory.

Potential of mean force and transient states in polyelectrolyte complexation

The association between polyelectrolytes (PEs) of the same size but opposite charge is systematically studied in terms of the potential of mean force (PMF) along their center-of-mass reaction coordinate via coarse-grained, implicit-solvent, explicit-salt computer simulations. The focus is set on the onset and the intermediate, transient stages of complexation. At conditions above the counterion-condensation threshold, the PE association process exhibits a distinct sliding-rod-like behavior where the polymer chains approach each other by first stretching out at a critical distance close to their contour length, then 'shaking hand' and sliding along each other in a parallel fashion, before eventually folding into a neutral complex. The essential part of the PMF for highly charged PEs can be very well described by a simple theory based on sliding charged `Debye--Hückel' rods with renormalized charges in addition to an explicit entropy contribution owing to the release of condensed counterions. Interestingly, at the onset of complex formation, the mean force between the PE chains is found to be discontinuous, reflecting a bimodal structural behavior that arises from the coexistence of interconnected-rod and isolated-coil states. These two microstates of the PE complex are balanced by subtle counterion release effects and separated by a free-energy barrier due to unfavorable stretching entropy.

Perspective: Coulomb fluids -- weak coupling, strong coupling, in between and beyond

We present a personal view on the current state of statistical mechanics of Coulomb fluids with special emphasis on the interactions between macromolecular surfaces, concentrating on the weak and the strong coupling limits. Both are introduced for a (primitive) counterion-only system in the presence of macroscopic, uniformly charged boundaries, where they can be derived systematically. Later we show how this formalism can be generalized to the cases with additional characteristic length scales that introduce new coupling parameters into the problem. These cases most notably include asymmetric ionic mixtures with mono- and multivalent ions that couple differently to charged surfaces, ions with internal charge (multipolar) structure and finite static polarizability, where weak and strong coupling limits can be constructed by analogy with the counterion-only case and lead to important new insights into their properties that can not be derived by any other means.
