Dynamics of low energy wave packets in the one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet

Spin wave theory plays a central role in the analysis of low-energy properties of the quantum ferromagnetic Heisenberg model. In this work, we present a first step towards a rigorous justification of this approximation in the context of quantum dynamics in one dimension. According to spin wave theory, the evolution of a spin wave state should be well approximated by its free evolution with the appropriate energy of free quasiparticles called magnons. Our main result establishes this idea rigorously for a class of spin wave packets. We focus on spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems, and consider wave packets composed of two magnons. We argue our result is optimal with respect to the timescales.

Large time behavior of Lévy processes and their nonlocal Schrödinger semigroups

We study the large time asymptotics of the Feynman-Kac semigroups of the symmetric Lévy process on unbounded open sets. Our main result proves the exact exponential asymptotic decay rate for the survival probability given in terms of the bottom of the spectrum of the associated nonlocal Schrödinger operator. We also prove quantitative upper bounds with an explicit polynomial correction. The proof is probabilistic and is done by decomposing the Lévy process into a finite-range jump process collecting the small jumps and an independent compound Poisson process describing the large jumps. Our approach gives a direct link between the spectral properties of nonlocal Schrödinger operators and pointwise decay of survival probabilities, which was previously unknown for jump processes.

Bell-shaped functions are Poisson kernels

In a recent paper [Kwaśnicki, Poisson kernels on the half-plane are bell-shaped, Bull. London Math. Soc. 58 (2026), no. e70303], the author proved that Poisson kernels for a class of elliptic operators in the half-plane are bell-shaped. By allowing one-sided barriers, we prove a converse result.

Harmonic extension technique: probabilistic and analytic perspectives

Consider a path of the reflected Brownian motion in the half-plane $\{y \ge 0\}$, and erase its part contained in the interior $\{y > 0\}$. What is left is, in an appropriate sense, a path of a jump-type stochastic process on the line $\{y = 0\}$ -- the boundary trace of the reflected Brownian motion. It is well known that this process is in fact the 1-stable Lévy process, also known as the Cauchy process. The PDE interpretation of the above fact is the following. Consider a bounded harmonic function $u$ in the half-plane $\{y > 0\}$, with sufficiently smooth boundary values $f$. Let $g$ denote the normal derivative of $u$ at the boundary. The mapping $f \mapsto g$ is known as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, and it is again well known that this operator coincides with the square root of the 1-D Laplace operator $-Δ$. Thus, the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator coincides with the generator of the boundary trace process. Molchanov and Ostrovskii proved that isotropic stable Lévy processes are boundary traces of appropriate diffusions in half-spaces. Caffarelli and Silvestre gave a PDE counterpart of this result: the fractional Laplace operator is the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for an appropriate second-order elliptic equation in the half-space. Again, the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator turns out to be the generator of the boundary trace process. During my talk I will discuss boundary trace processes and Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators in a more general context. My main goal will be to explain the connections between probabilistic and analytical results. Along the way, I will introduce the necessary machinery: Brownian local times and additive functionals, Krein's spectral theory of strings, and Fourier transform methods.

Dirichlet--Neumann bracketing for nonlocal operators

We establish Dirichlet--Neumann bracketing for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of $ψ(-Δ)$ on bounded Lipschitz domains, where $ψ$ is an arbitrary complete Bernstein function. The eigenvalues lie between $ψ$ applied to the corresponding Neumann and Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplacian. Both inequalities are strict whenever $ψ$ admits no meromorphic continuation to $\mathbb C \setminus \{0\}$. The proof uses quadratic forms, operator monotonicity, and an analysis of equality in resolvent comparisons. Applying the bracketing to intervals and balls gives a unified proof of simplicity of interval eigenvalues and antisymmetry of second eigenfunctions in balls under the same condition on $ψ$. For fractional powers, these recover results of Fall, Ghimenti, Micheletti and Pistoia for the interval, and of Fall, Feulefack, Temgoua and Weth and, independently, Benedikt, Bobkov, Dhara and Girg for the ball. The argument extends these conclusions to a broader class of nonlocal operators.

Shorter proof of dimension-free $L^p$ estimates for maximal Riesz transforms

We provide a shorter and more direct proof of $L^p$ estimates for maximal Riesz transforms (of an arbitrary order) in terms of the corresponding Riesz transforms, with a constant independent of the dimension of the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$. This result was originally proved by Mateu, Orobitg, Pérez and Verdera with a constant depending on the dimension, and improved to a dimension-free inequality by Kucharski, Wróbel and Zienkiewicz.

Generalised eigenvector expansion of infinite Toeplitz matrices with absolutely/completely monotone entries

We study the spectral theory of infinite Toeplitz matrices $T = (a_{k - l})$ under the assumption that $(a_k)$ and $(a_{-k})$ are completely monotone sequences. We derive expressions for generalised eigenvectors and prove a generalised eigenvector expansion of $T$. Even if the matrix $T$ is not normal, our expressions involve only eigenvalues and eigenvectors with real entries.

Maximal inequalities for derivatives of spherical means

We give an alternative formulation of Stein's maximal inequality for generalised spherical averages in terms of derivatives of standard spherical means: if \[ k \ge 0, \qquad d \ge 2 k + 3 , \qquad \frac{d}{d - k - 1} < p < \frac{d - 1}{k} , \] and $σ$ is the normalised surface measure on the unit sphere $\mathbb S$, then the maximal operator \[f \mapsto \sup_{r > 0} \, \biggl\lvert r^k (\tfrac{d}{dr})^k \int_{\mathbb S} f(\cdot + r y) σ(dy) \biggr\rvert\] is bounded on $L^p$, with a constant that is independent of the dimension $d$.

On the dimension-free control of higher order truncated Riesz transforms by higher order Riesz transforms

Fix a positive integer $k$. Let $R_k$ be a higher order Riesz transform of order $k$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and let $R_k^t,$ $t>0,$ be the corresponding truncated Riesz transform. We study the relation between $\|R_k f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)}$ and $\|R_k^t f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)}$ for $p=1$, $p=\infty,$ and $p=2.$ We do this by analyzing the factorization operator $M_k^t$ defined by the relation $R_k^t=M_k^t R_k.$ The operator $M_k^t$ is a convolution operator associated with an $L^1$ radial kernel $b_{k,d}^t(x)=t^{-d}b_{k,d}(x/t),$ where $b_{k,d}(x):=b_{k,d}^1(x).$ We prove that $b_{k,d} \ge 0$ only for $k=1,2.$ We also show that for fixed $k\ge 3$, \[ \lim_{d\to \infty}\|b_{k,d}\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)}=\infty. \] This contrasts with the cases $k=1,2$, where it is known that $\|b_{k,d}\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)}=1$. Finally, we show that for any positive integer $k$, the Fourier transform of $b_{k,d}$ is bounded in absolute value by $1.$ This implies the contractive estimate \[ \|R_k^t f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)}\le \|R_k f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)} \] and an analogous estimate for general singular integrals with smooth kernels for radial input functions $f.$

Volumetric density estimates for nonlocal minimal surfaces

In this article, we prove that viscosity subsolutions to nonlocal mean curvature-type equations satisfy universal volumetric estimates at all scales. Our results hold for general symmetric kernels that are comparable to the fractional Laplacian. Furthermore, we prove that subsolutions with low density (with respect to a universal constant) necessarily have `fat boundary', that is, have topological boundary with positive Lebesgue measure.

Poisson kernels on the half-plane are bell-shaped

Consider a second-order elliptic operator $L$ in the half-plane $\mathbb R \times (0, \infty)$ with coefficients depending only on the second coordinate. The Poisson kernel for $L$ is used in the representation of positive $L$-harmonic functions, that is, solutions of $L u = 0$. In probabilistic terms, the Poisson kernel is the density function of the distribution of the diffusion in $\mathbb R \times (0, \infty)$ with generator $L$ at the hitting time of the boundary. We prove that the Poisson kernel for $L$ is bell-shaped: its $n$th derivative changes sign $n$ times. In particular, it is unimodal and it has two inflection points (it is concave, then convex, then concave again).

Two-sided bell-shaped sequences

A nonnegative real function f is bell-shaped if it converges to zero at plus and minus infinity and the nth derivative of f changes sign n times for every n = 0, 1, 2, ... Similarly, a two-sided nonnegative sequence a(k) is bell-shaped if it converges to zero at plus and minus infinity and the nth iterated difference of a(k) changes sign n times for every n = 0, 1, 2, ... A characterisation of bell-shaped functions was given by Thomas Simon and the first named author, and recently a similar result for one-sided bell-shaped sequences was found by the authors. In the present article we give a complete description of two-sided bell-shaped sequences. Our main result proves that bell-shaped sequences are convolutions of Pólya frequency sequences and what we call absolutely monotone-then-completely monotone sequences, and it provides an equivalent, and relatively easy to verify, condition in terms of holomorphic extensions of the generating function. We also prove that if f is a bell-shaped function, then f(k) is a bell-shaped sequence.

The nonlocal Harnack inequality for antisymmetric functions: an approach via Bochner's relation and harmonic analysis

We revisit a Harnack inequality for antisymmetric functions that has been recently established for the fractional Laplacian and we extend it to more general nonlocal elliptic operators. The new approach to deal with these problems that we propose in this paper leverages Bochner's relation, allowing one to relate a one-dimensional Fourier transform of an odd function with a three-dimensional Fourier transform of a radial function. In this way, Harnack inequalities for odd functions, which are essentially Harnack inequalities of boundary type, are reduced to interior Harnack inequalities.

Beurling-Deny formula for Sobolev-Bregman forms

For an arbitrary regular Dirichlet form $\mathscr{E}$ and the associated symmetric Markovian semigroup $T_t$, we consider the corresponding Sobolev-Bregman form $\mathscr{E}_p(u) = -\tfrac{1}{p} \frac{d}{d t}\bigr\vert_{t = 0} \|T_t u\|_p^p$, where $p \in (1, \infty)$. We prove a variant of the Beurling-Deny formula for $\mathscr{E}_p$. As an application, we prove the corresponding Hardy-Stein identity. Our results extend previous works in this area, which either required that $\mathscr{E}$ is translation-invariant, or that $u$ is sufficiently regular.

Liouville's theorems for Lévy operators

Let $L$ be a Lévy operator. A function $h$ is said to be harmonic with respect to $L$ if $L h = 0$ in an appropriate sense. We prove Liouville's theorem for positive functions harmonic with respect to a general Lévy operator $L$: such functions are necessarily mixtures of exponentials. For signed harmonic functions we provide a fairly general result, which encompasses and extends all Liouville-type theorems previously known in this context, and which allows to trade regularity assumptions on $L$ for growth restrictions on $h$. Finally, we construct an explicit counterexample which shows that Liouville's theorem for signed functions harmonic with respect to a general Lévy operator $L$ does not hold.

Suprema of Lévy processes with completely monotone jumps: spectral-theoretic approach

We study spectral-theoretic properties of non-self-adjoint operators arising in the study of one-dimensional Lévy processes with completely monotone jumps with a one-sided barrier. With no further assumptions, we provide an integral expression for the bivariate Laplace transform of the transition density $p_t^+(x, y)$ of the killed process in $(0, \infty)$, and under a minor regularity condition, a generalised eigenfunction expansion is given for the corresponding transition operator $P_t^+$. Assuming additionally appropriate growth of the characteristic exponent, we prove a generalised eigenfunction expansion of the transition density $p_t^+(x, y)$. Under similar conditions, we additionally show integral formulae for the cumulative distribution functions of the infimum and supremum functionals $\underline{X}_t$ and $\overline{X}_t$. The class of processes covered by our results include many stable and stable-like Lévy processes, as well as many processes with Brownian components. Our results recover known expressions for the classical risk process, and provide similar integral formulae for some other simple examples of Lévy processes.

Sharp $\ell^p$ inequalities for discrete singular integrals on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$

This paper investigates higher dimensional versions of the longstanding conjecture verified in [Bañuelos and Kwaśnicki, Duke Math. J. (2019)] that the $\ell^p$-norm of the discrete Hilbert transform on the integers is the same as the $L^p$-norm of the Hilbert transform on the real line. It computes the $\ell^p$-norms of a family of discrete operators on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\geq 1.$ They are discretizations of a new class of singular integrals on $\mathbb{R}^d$ that have the same kernels as the classical Riesz transforms near zero and similar behavior at infinity. The discrete operators have the same $p$-norms as the classical Riesz transforms on $\mathbb{R}^d$. They are constructed as conditional expectations of martingale transforms of Doob h-processes conditioned to exit the upper--half space $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{R}_{+}$ only on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The paper also presents a discrete analogue of the classical method of rotations which gives the norm of a different variant of discrete Riesz transforms on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Along the way a new proof is given based on Fourier transform techniques of the key identity used to identify the norm of the discrete Hilbert transform in [Bañuelos and Kwaśnicki, Duke Math. J. (2019)]. Open problems are stated.
