Simplicity of q-Gaussian C*-algebras

We show that q-Gaussian $C^*$-algebras for $q \in (-1, 1)$ have the Dixmier averaging property, and hence are simple with a unique trace. We argue by combining rapid decay and spectral gap estimates for the commutators with the generators, which are obtained from free probability.

Separable neighbourhood of identity in C$^{\ast}$-algebras

We study the structure of separable elements in bipartite C$^{\ast}$-algebras, focusing on the existence and size of a separable neighbourhood around the identity element. While this phenomenon is well understood in the finite-dimensional setting, its extension to general C$^{\ast}$-algebras presents additional challenges. We show that the problem of determining such a neighbourhood can be reduced to estimating the completely bounded norm of contractive positive maps. This approach allows us to characterize the size of such neighbourhoods in terms of structural properties of the algebra, notably its rank. As a consequence, we also resolve a recent conjecture of Musat and Rørdam.

Quantum-rigid random quantum graphs

A quantum graph $\mathcal{G}$ housed by a matrix algebra $M_n$ can be encoded as an operator system $\mathcal S=\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{G}}\le M_n$. There are two sensible notions of quantum automorphism group for any such: $\mathrm{Qut}(\mathcal G)$, capturing the quantum symmetries of the adjacency matrix $A:M_n\to M_n$ attached to $\mathcal{G}$, and $\mathrm{Qut}(\mathcal S\le M_n)$, the quantum group acting universally on $M_n$ so as to preserve its $C^*$ structure, standard trace, and subspace $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$. The two quantum groups coincide classically, but diverge in general. We nevertheless show that both are generically trivial in the sense that they are so for $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$ ranging over a non-empty Zariski-open set under all reasonable dimensional constraints on $\dim \mathcal{S}$ and $n$. This extends analogous prior results by the first and third authors to the effect that classical symmetry groups of still-quantum graphs are generically trivial, and offers a fully quantum counterpart to the familiar probabilistic almost-rigidity of finite graphs. An auxiliary result sheds some light on the relationship between the two notions of quantum automorphism group, identifying the universal preserver of the quantum adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{G}$ with the quantum automorphism group not of $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$, but rather of the complex conjugate $\overline{\mathcal{S}}\le M_n$.

A quantum Frucht's theorem and quantum automorphisms of quantum Cayley graphs

We establish a quantum version of Frucht's Theorem, proving that every finite quantum group is the quantum automorphism group of an undirected finite quantum graph. The construction is based on first considering several quantum Cayley graphs of the quantum group in question, and then providing a method to systematically combine them into a single quantum graph with the right symmetry properties. We also show that the dual $\widehat Γ$ of any non-abelian finite group $Γ$ is ``quantum rigid''. That is, $\widehat Γ$ always admits a quantum Cayley graph whose quantum automorphism group is exactly $\widehat Γ$.

KMS states on quantum Cuntz-Krieger algebras

We study the KMS states on local quantum Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to quantum graphs. Using their isomorphism to the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of the quantum edge correspondence, we show that the general criteria for KMS states can be translated into statements about the underlying quantum adjacency operator, somewhat analogously to the case of classical Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We study some examples of gauge actions, for which a complete classification of KMS states can be obtained.

Connectivity for quantum graphs via quantum adjacency operators

Connectivity is a fundamental property of quantum graphs, previously studied in the operator system model for matrix quantum graphs and via graph homomorphisms in the quantum adjacency matrix model. In this paper, we develop an algebraic characterization of connectivity for general quantum graphs within the quantum adjacency matrix framework. Our approach extends earlier results to the non-tracial setting and beyond regular quantum graphs. We utilize a quantum Perron-Frobenius theorem that provides a spectral characterization of connectivity, and we further characterize connectivity in terms of the irreducibility of the quantum adjacency matrix and the nullity of the associated graph Laplacian. These results are obtained using the KMS inner product, which unifies and generalizes existing formulations.

On quantum Cayley graphs

We clarify the correspondence between the two approaches to quantum graphs: via quantum adjacency matrices and via quantum relations. We show how the choice of a (possibly non-tracial) weight manifests itself on the quantum relation side and suggest an extension of the theory of quantum graphs to the infinite dimensional case. Then we use this framework to introduce quantum graphs associated to discrete quantum groups, leading to a new definition of a quantum Cayley graph.

Bimodule coefficients, Riesz transforms on Coxeter groups and strong solidity

In deformation-rigidity theory it is often important to know whether certain bimodules are weakly contained in the coarse bimodule. Consider a bimodule $H$ over the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[Γ]$, with $Γ$ a discrete group. The starting point of this paper is that if a dense set of the so-called coefficients of $H$ is contained in the Schatten $\mathcal{S}_p$ class $p \in [2, \infty)$ then the $n$-fold tensor power $H^{\otimes n}_Γ$ for $n \geq p/2$ is quasi-contained in the coarse bimodule. We apply this to gradient bimodules associated with the carré du champ of a symmetric quantum Markov semi-group. For Coxeter groups we give a number of characterizations of having coefficients in $\mathcal{S}_p$ for the gradient bimodule constructed from the word length function. We get equivalence of: (1) the gradient-$\mathcal{S}_p$ property introduced by the second named author, (2) smallness at infinity of a natural compactification of the Coxeter group, and for a large class of Coxeter groups: (3) walks in the Coxeter diagram called parity paths. We derive several strong solidity results. In particular, we extend current strong solidity results for right-angled Hecke von Neumann algebras beyond right-angled Coxeter groups that are small at infinity. Our general methods also yield a concise proof of a result by T. Sinclair for discrete groups admitting a proper cocycle into a $p$-integrable representation.

Full solution of the factoriality question for $q$-Araki-Woods von Neumann algebras via conjugate variables

We establish factoriality of $q$-Araki-Woods von Neumann algebras (with the number of generators at least two) in full generality, exploiting the approach via conjugate variables developed recently in the tracial case by Akihiro Miyagawa and Roland Speicher, and abstract results of Brent Nelson. We also establish non-injectivity and determine the type of the factors in question. The factors are solid and full when the number of generators is finite.

Relative Haagerup property for arbitrary von Neumann algebras

We introduce the relative Haagerup approximation property for a unital, expected inclusion of arbitrary von Neumann algebras and show that if the smaller algebra is finite then the notion only depends on the inclusion itself, and not on the choice of the conditional expectation. Several variations of the definition are shown to be equivalent in this case, and in particular the approximating maps can be chosen to be unital and preserving the reference state. The concept is then applied to amalgamated free products of von Neumann algebras and used to deduce that the standard Haagerup property for a von Neumann algebra is stable under taking free products with amalgamation over finite-dimensional subalgebras. The general results are illustrated by examples coming from q-deformed Hecke-von Neumann algebras and von Neumann algebras of quantum orthogonal groups.

On the isomorphism class of $q$-Gaussian C$^\ast$-algebras for infinite variables

For a real Hilbert space $H_{\mathbb{R}}$ and $-1 < q < 1$ Bozejko and Speicher introduced the C$^\ast$-algebra $A_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ and von Neumann algebra $M_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ of $q$-Gaussian variables. We prove that if $\dim(H_{\mathbb{R}}) = \infty$ and $-1 < q < 1, q \not = 0$ then $M_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ does not have the Akemann-Ostrand property with respect to $A_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$. It follows that $A_q(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ is not isomorphic to $A_0(H_{\mathbb{R}})$. This gives an answer to the C$^\ast$-algebraic part of Question 1.1 and Question 1.2 in [NeZe18].

On the von Neumann algebra of class functions on a compact quantum group

We study analogues of the radial subalgebras in free group factors (called the algebras of class functions) in the setting of compact quantum groups. For the free orthogonal quantum groups we show that they are not MASAs, as soon as we are in a non-Kac situation. The most important notion to our present work is that of a (quasi-)split inclusion. We prove that the inclusion of the algebra of class functions is quasi-split for some unitary quantum groups; in this case the subalgebra is non-abelian and we also obtain a result concerning its relative commutant. In the positive direction, we construct certain bicrossed products from the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ for which the algebra of class functions is a MASA.

Random quantum graphs

We prove a number of results to the effect that generic quantum graphs (defined via operator systems as in the work of Duan-Severini-Winter / Weaver) have few symmetries: for a Zariski-dense open set of tuples $(X_1,\cdots,X_d)$ of traceless self-adjoint operators in the $n\times n$ matrix algebra the corresponding operator system has trivial automorphism group, in the largest possible range for the parameters: $2\le d\le n^2-3$. Moreover, the automorphism group is generically abelian in the larger parameter range $1\le d\le n^2-2$. This then implies that for those respective parameters the corresponding random-quantum-graph model built on the GUE ensembles of $X_i$'s (mimicking the Erdős-Rényi $G(n,p)$ model) has trivial/abelian automorphism group almost surely.

Quantum edge correspondences and quantum Cuntz-Krieger algebras

Given a quantum graph $\mathcal{G}=(B,ψ,A)$, we define a C*-correspondence $E_\mathcal{G}$ over the noncommutative vertex C*-algebra $B$, called the quantum edge correspondence. For a classical graph $\mathcal{G}$, $E_\mathcal{G}$ is the usual graph correspondence spanned by the edges of $\mathcal{G}$. When the quantum adjacency matrix $A\colon B\to B$ is completely positive, we show that $E_\mathcal{G}$ is faithful if and only if $\ker(A)$ does not contain a central summand of $B$. In this case, we show that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $\mathcal{O}_{E_\mathcal{G}}$ is isomorphic to a quotient of the quantum Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal{O}(\mathcal{G})$ defined by Brannan, Eifler, Voigt, and Weber. Moreover, the kernel of the quotient map is shown to be generated by "localized" versions of the quantum Cuntz-Krieger relations, and $\mathcal{O}_{E_\mathcal{G}}$ is shown to be the universal object associated to these local relations. We study in detail some concrete examples and make connections with the theory of Exel crossed products.

Bigalois extensions and the graph isomorphism game

We study the graph isomorphism game that arises in quantum information theory from the perspective of bigalois extensions of compact quantum groups. We show that every algebraic quantum isomorphism between a pair of (quantum) graphs $X$ and $Y$ arises as a quotient of a certain measured bigalois extension for the quantum automorphism groups $G_X$ and $G_Y$ of the graphs $X$ and $Y$. In particular, this implies that the quantum groups $G_X$ and $G_Y$ are monoidally equivalent. We also establish a converse to this result, which says that every compact quantum group $G$ monoidally equivalent to $G_X$ is of the form $G_Y$ for a suitably chosen quantum graph $Y$ that is quantum isomorphic to $X$. As an application of these results, we deduce that the $\ast$-algebraic, C$^\ast$-algebraic, and quantum commuting (qc) notions of a quantum isomorphism between classical graphs $X$ and $Y$ all coincide. Using the notion of equivalence for non-local games, we deduce the same result for other synchronous non-local games, including the synBCS game and certain related graph homomorphism games.

Complete metric approximation property for $q$-Araki-Woods algebras

By adapting an ultraproduct technique of Junge and Zeng, we prove that radial completely bounded multipliers on $q$-Gaussian algebras transfer to $q$-Araki-Woods algebras. As a consequence, we establish the $w^{\ast}$-complete metric approximation property for all $q$-Araki-Woods algebras. We apply the latter result to show that the canonical ultraweakly dense C$^\ast$-subalgebras of $q$-Araki-Woods algebras are always QWEP.

$L_2$-cohomology, derivations and quantum Markov semi-groups on $q$-Gaussian algebras

We study (quasi-)cohomological properties through an analysis of quantum Markov semi-groups. We construct higher order Hochschild cocycles using gradient forms associated with a quantum Markov semi-group. By using Schatten-$\mathcal{S}_p$ estimates we analyze when these cocycles take values in the coarse bimodule. For the 1-cocycles (the derivations) we show that under natural conditions they imply the Akemann-Ostrand property (using the Riesz transform). We apply this to $q$-Gaussian algebras $Γ_q(H)$. As a result $q$-Gaussians satisfy AO$^+$ for $| q | \leqslant \dim(H)^{-1/2}$. This includes a new range of $q$ in low dimensions compared to Shlyakhtenko.
