A note on heat kernel estimates, resistance bounds and Poincaré inequality

Sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates are typical of fractal graphs. We show that sub-Gaussian estimates on graphs follow from a Poincaré inequality, capacity upper bound, and a slow volume growth condition. An important feature of this work is that we do not assume elliptic Harnack inequality, cutoff Sobolev inequality, or exit time bounds.

Quasisymmetric uniformization and heat kernel estimates

We show that the circle packing embedding in $\mathbb{R}^2$ of a one-ended, planar triangulation with polynomial growth is quasisymmetric if and only if the simple random walk on the graph satisfies sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate with spectral dimension two. Our main results provide a new family of graphs and fractals that satisfy sub-Gaussian estimates and Harnack inequalities.

Heat kernel estimates for anomalous heavy-tailed random walks

Sub-Gaussian estimates for the natural random walk is typical of many regular fractal graphs. Subordination shows that there exist heavy tailed jump processes whose jump indices are greater than or equal to two. However, the existing machinery used to prove heat kernel bounds for such heavy tailed random walks fail in this case. In this work we extend Davies' perturbation method to obtain transition probability bounds for these anomalous heavy tailed random walks. We prove global upper and lower bounds on the transition probability density that are sharp up to constants. An important feature of our work is that the methods we develop are robust to small perturbations of the symmetric jump kernel.

Boundary Harnack principle and elliptic Harnack inequality

We prove a scale-invariant boundary Harnack principle for inner uniform domains over a large family of Dirichlet spaces. A novel feature of our work is that our assumptions are robust to time changes of the corresponding diffusions. In particular, we do not assume volume doubling property for the symmetric measure.

Stability of elliptic Harnack inequality

We prove that the elliptic Harnack inequality (on a manifold, graph, or suitably regular metric measure space) is stable under bounded perturbations, as well as rough isometries.

Davies' method for anomalous diffusions

Davies' method of perturbed semigroups is a classical technique to obtain off-diagonal upper bounds on the heat kernel. However Davies' method does not apply to anomalous diffusions due to the singularity of energy measures. In this note, we overcome the difficulty by modifying the Davies' perturbation method to obtain sub-Gaussian upper bounds on the heat kernel. Our computations closely follow the seminal work of Carlen, Kusuoka and Stroock \cite{CKS}. However, a cutoff Sobolev inequality due to Andres and Barlow \cite{AB} is used to bound the energy measure.

Transition probability estimates for long range random walks

Let $(M,d,μ)$ be a uniformly discrete metric measure space satisfying space homogeneous volume doubling condition. We consider discrete time Markov chains on $M$ symmetric with respect to $μ$ and whose one-step transition density is comparable to $ (V_h(d(x,y)) ϕ(d(x,y))^{-1}$, where $ϕ$ is a positive continuous regularly varying function with index $β\in (0,2)$ and $V_h$ is the homogeneous volume growth function. Extending several existing work by other authors, we prove global upper and lower bounds for $n$-step transition probability density that are sharp up to constants.

Anomalous threshold behavior of long range random walks

We consider weighted graphs satisfying sub-Gaussian estimate for the natural random walk. On such graphs, we study symmetric Markov chains with heavy tailed jumps. We establish a threshold behavior of such Markov chains when the index governing the tail heaviness (or jump index) equals the escape time exponent (or walk dimension) of the sub-Gaussian estimate. In a certain sense, this generalizes the classical threshold corresponding to the second moment condition.

The divisible sandpile at critical density

The divisible sandpile starts with i.i.d. random variables ("masses") at the vertices of an infinite, vertex-transitive graph, and redistributes mass by a local toppling rule in an attempt to make all masses at most 1. The process stabilizes almost surely if m<1 and it almost surely does not stabilize if m>1, where $m$ is the mean mass per vertex. The main result of this paper is that in the critical case m=1, if the initial masses have finite variance, then the process almost surely does not stabilize. To give quantitative estimates on a finite graph, we relate the number of topplings to a discrete biLaplacian Gaussian field.

Harnack inequalities and Gaussian estimates for random walks on metric measure spaces

We characterize Gaussian estimates for transition probability of a discrete time Markov chain in terms of geometric properties of the underlying state space. In particular, we show that the following are equivalent: (1) Two sided Gaussian bounds on heat kernel (2) A scale invariant Parabolic Harnack inequality (3) Volume doubling property and a scale invariant Poincaré inequality. The underlying state space is a metric measure space, a setting that includes both manifolds and graphs as special cases. An important feature of our work is that our techniques are robust to small perturbations of the underlying space and the Markov kernel. In particular, we show the stability of the above properties under quasi-isometries. We discuss various applications and examples.

Roundness properties of ultrametric spaces

We obtain several new characterizations of ultrametric spaces in terms of roundness, generalized roundness, strict p-negative type, and p-polygonal equalities (p > 0). This allows new insight into the isometric embedding of ultrametric spaces into Euclidean spaces. We also consider roundness properties additive metric spaces which are not ultrametric.
