Revisiting the CeO Anion Photoelectron Spectrum: Resolving the Assignment and Photodetachment Mechanism of Satellite Transitions

CeO serves as an important model system for understanding the interplay of electron correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and 4f/5d configurational mixing in lanthanide oxides. Its anion photoelectron spectrum exhibits dense electronic manifolds and multielectron shake-up processes that complicate spectral assignments and photodetachment dynamics. Here, we combine high-resolution anion photoelectron spectroscopy with spin-free and spin-orbit-coupled CASSCF+NEVPT2 calculations to characterize the electronic structure of CeO- and CeO. A binning-based data analysis approach enables observation of weak transitions hidden by spectral congestion, while multireference calculations reproduce the low-lying electronic structure and detachment energetics. On this basis, tentative assignments are proposed for the observed photoelectron features. Analysis of photodetachment selection rules, photoelectron angular distributions, and multielectron detachment channels provides additional insight into the mechanisms underlying the spectrum. These results establish a comprehensive interpretation of the CeO- photoelectron spectrum and underscore the importance of combining high-resolution spectroscopy with multireference relativistic theory for electronically complex lanthanide systems.

Resolving Peak Shifting Effects in Real-Time Time-Dependent Orbital Propagation Methods Through Nonorthogonal Expansions

Self-consistent field real-time electronic structure methods are a powerful approach for modeling ultrafast processes but suffer from systematic errors in predicted transition energies, commonly known as peak shifting, that obscure direct comparison with experiment. Although this effect has been explored in single reference methods, a general understanding that extends to multiconfigurational methods remains unresolved. Here, we develop a real-time nonorthogonal multiconfigurational self-consistent field (RT-TD NOMCSCF) formalism in which independently propagated orbital sets generate a compact, nonorthogonal wavefunction. The approach establishes a unified framework for nonlinear real-time electronic structure theories, which we use to reveal the common origin of peak shifting across single and multireference limits. Using this framework, we demonstrate that peak shifting does not arise exclusively from the effect of state averaging over the internal space basis, but also from the accessible external configurational space. By systematically expanding the internal space with independently propagated orbital sets, RT-TD NOMCSCF suppresses this aver- aging, recovers correct transition energies, and distinguishes intrinsic peak shifting from numerical peak drifting caused by propagation errors. Thus, these developments establish nonlinear real-time electronic structure methods that enables more accurate simulations of ultrafast processes.

Changing the paradigm in f-containing cold molecules: the impact of spin-orbit coupling and f-d transitions on quasi-bound vibrational states

Present-day state-of-the-art ab initio many-body calculations on f-block containing cold molecules heavily focus on perturbative approaches for spin-orbit coupling and exclude a substantial part of the atomic transitions in the $f$- and $d$-shell. Here, we demonstrate the cruciality of a proper relativistic treatment of the $f$- and $d$-shell in Yb-containing diatomics and the inclusion of $f\rightarrow d$ transitions to obtain physically sound elastic scatterings and pre-dissociation lifetimes. We focus on state-of-the-art relativistic many-body calculations for the Yb atom's ground- and excited-state and the YbLi$^+$ potential energy surface. For that purpose, we exploit various quantum many-body methods, namely a spin-free and four-component implementation of the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) model and its equation of motion extensions, spin-free complete active space self-consistent field, and internally contracted multi-reference (MR) configuration interaction approaches, and spin-free MRCCSD with a perturbative and full triples correction. We oppose scalar relativistic calculations to four-component variants to support the reliability of our EOM-CCSD study and shed new light on the interplay between these systems' spin-orbit coupling and the proper treatment of relativistic effects. Most importantly, we observe a significant shift in the electronic spectra of the $f\rightarrow d$ excitation block. We also provide new reference potential energy surfaces for ground and excited states for which theoretically sound elastic scattering and pre-dissociation lifetimes are calculated.
