Tropical resolutions of configuration hypersurfaces

Configuration polynomials generalize the Kirchhoff polynomial of a graph, as well as the Symanzik polynomials that appear in the denominators of Feynman integrands. The configuration hypersurfaces cut out by such polynomials are typically highly singular, which poses a challenge for the evaluation of Feynman integrals even in simplified settings. In this paper, we provide a two-step recipe for a resolution of singularities of any irreducible configuration hypersurface. We first consider the normalization of the Nash blow-up, which we identify with an incidence variety introduced by Bloch. This variety is typically still not smooth, but it is the closure of a smooth subvariety of a torus. The latter then a smooth, tropical compactification, using work of Tevelev. We construct explicitly such a compactification and a morphism to the normalized Nash blow-up for every configuration, described in terms of bipermutohedral matroid combinatorics introduced by Ardila, Denham and Huh. Along the way, we find that the normalized Nash blow-up of the configuration hypersurface has strongly $F$-regular singularities in positive characteristic. We deduce this by certifying $F$-rationality of its biprojective cone, and infer from it that the normalized Nash blow-up has rational singularities over the complex numbers.

Representable triangulated functors in terms of semiorthogonal decompositions

A theorem of Bondal and Kapranov lifts representations of cohomological functors from semiorthogonal decompositions of triangulated categories. We present a version of this result for triangulated functors. To this end, we introduce suitable terminology in enriched category theory and transfer the original proof.

Categorical matrix factorizations and monomorphism categories

This article generalizes the correspondence between matrix factorizations and maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over hypersurface rings due to Eisenbud and Yoshino. We consider factorizations with several factors in a purely categorical context, extending results of Sun and Zhang for Gorenstein projective module factorizations. Our formulation relies on a notion of hypersurface category and replaces Gorenstein projectives by objects of general Frobenius exact subcategories. We show that factorizations over such categories form again a Frobenius category. Our main result is then a triangle equivalence between the stable category of factorizations and that of chains of monomorphisms.

On the triangulated structure of stable monomorphism categories

We investigate the triangulated structure of stable monomorphism categories (filtered chain categories) over a Frobenius category. The high degree of symmetry of linear quivers leads to a plethora of semiorthogonal decompositions into smaller categories of the same type. These form polygons of recollements, in which a full turn of mutations is a power of a particular auto-equivalence of the stable monomorphism category. A certain power of this auto-equivalence is the square of the suspension functor. We describe the infinite chains of adjoint pairs obtained from the polygons. As an application, we explicate the construction of Bondal and Kapranov for lifting representing objects of dualized hom-functors in our setup.

The stabilized bounded N-derived category of an exact category

Buchweitz related the singularity category of a (strongly) Gorenstein ring and the stable category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules by a triangle equivalence. We phrase his result in a relative categorical setting based on N-complexes instead of classical 2-complexes. The role of Cohen-Macaulay modules is played by chains of monics in a Frobenius subcategory of an exact category. As a byproduct, we provide foundational results on derived categories of N-complexes over exact categories known from the Abelian case or for 2-complexes.

Limit spectral distribution for non-degenerate hypersurface singularities

We establish Kyoji Saito's continuous limit distribution for the spectrum of Newton non-degenerate hypersurface singularities. Investigating Saito's notion of dominant value in the case of irreducible plane curve singularities, we find that the log canonical threshold is strictly bounded below by the doubled inverse of the Milnor number. We show that this bound is asymptotically sharp.

Hypersurface singularities with monomial Jacobian ideal

We show that every convergent power series with monomial extended Jacobian ideal is right equivalent to a Thom-Sebastiani polynomial. This solves a problem posed by Hauser and Schicho. On the combinatorial side, we introduce a notion of Jacobian semigroup ideal involving a transversal matroid. For any such ideal we construct a defining Thom-Sebastiani polynomial. On the analytic side, we show that power series with a quasihomogeneous extended Jacobian ideal are strongly Euler homogeneous. Due to a Mather-Yau-type theorem, such power series are determined by their Jacobian ideal up to right equivalence.

Graph hypersurfaces with torus action and a conjecture of Aluffi

Generalizing the star graphs of Müller-Stach and Westrich, we describe a class of graphs whose associated graph hypersurface is equipped with a non-trivial torus action. For such graphs, we show that the Euler characteristic of the corresponding projective graph hypersurface complement is zero. In contrast, we also show that the Euler characteristic in question can take any integer value for a suitable graph. This disproves a conjecture of Aluffi in a strong sense.

Configuration polynomials under contact equivalence

Configuration polynomials generalize the classical Kirchhoff polynomial defined by a graph. Their study sheds light on certain polynomials appearing in Feynman integrands. Contact equivalence provides a way to study the associated configuration hypersurface. In the contact equivalence class of any configuration polynomial we identify a polynomial with minimal number of variables; it is a configuration polynomial. This minimal number is bounded by $r+1\choose 2$, where $r$ is the rank of the underlying matroid. We show that the number of equivalence classes is finite exactly up to rank $3$ and list explicit normal forms for these classes.

Matroid connectivity and singularities of configuration hypersurfaces

Consider a linear realization of a matroid over a field. One associates with it a configuration polynomial and a symmetric bilinear form with linear homogeneous coefficients. The corresponding configuration hypersurface and its non-smooth locus support the respective first and second degeneracy scheme of the bilinear form. We show that these schemes are reduced and describe the effect of matroid connectivity: for (2-)connected matroids, the configuration hypersurface is integral, and the second degeneracy scheme is reduced Cohen-Macaulay of codimension 3. If the matroid is 3-connected, then also the second degeneracy scheme is integral. In the process, we describe the behavior of configuration polynomials, forms and schemes with respect to various matroid constructions.

Algebraic aspects of hypergeometric differential equations

We review some classical and modern aspects of hypergeometric differential equations, including $A$-hypergeometric systems of Gel'fand, Graev, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Some recent advances in this theory, such as Euler-Koszul homology, rank jump phenomena, irregularity questions and Hodge theoretic aspects are discussed with more details. We also give some applications of the theory of hypergeometric systems to toric mirror symmetry.

Duality on value semigroups

We establish a combinatorial counterpart of the Cohen-Macaulay duality on a class of curve singularities which includes algebroid curves. For such singularities the value semigroup and the value semigroup ideals of all fractional ideals satisfy axioms that define so-called good semigroups and good semigroup ideals. We prove that each good semigroup admits a canonical good semigroup ideal which gives rise to a duality on good semigroup ideals. We show that the Cohen-Macaulay duality and our good semigroup duality are compatible under taking values.

Inverse limits of Macaulay's inverse systems

Generalizing a result of Masuti and the second author, we describe inverse limits of Macaulay's inverse systems for Cohen-Macaulay factor algebras of formal power series or polynomial rings over an infinite field. On the way we find a strictness result for filtrations defined by regular sequences. It generalizes both a lemma of Uli Walther and the Rees isomorphism.

A residual duality over Gorenstein rings with application to logarithmic differential forms

Kyoji Saito's notion of a free divisor was generalized by the first author to reduced Gorenstein spaces and by Delphine Pol to reduced Cohen-Macaulay spaces. Starting point is the Aleksandrov-Terao theorem: A hypersurface is free if and only if its Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay. Pol obtains a generalized Jacobian ideal as a cokernel by dualizing Aleksandrov's multi-logarithmic residue sequence. Notably it is essentially a suitably chosen complete intersection ideal that is used for dualizing. Pol shows that this generalized Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the module of Aleksandrov's multi-logarithmic differential k-forms has (minimal) projective dimension k-1, where k is the codimension in a smooth ambient space. This equivalent characterization reduces to Saito's definition of freeness in case k=1. In this article we translate Pol's duality result in terms of general commutative algebra. It yields a more conceptual proof of Pol's result and a generalization involving higher multi-logarithmic forms and generalized Jacobian modules.

Gröbner basics for mixed Hodge modules

We develop a Gröbner basis theory for a class of algebras that generalizes both PBW-algebras and rings of differential algebras on smooth varieties. Emphasis lies on methods to compute filtrations and graded structures defined by weight vectors. The approach is tailored for bifiltered D-modules satisfying properties of mixed Hodge modules. As a key ingredient in functors of such modules our theory applies to compute the order filtration on pieces of a V-filtration.

A Saito criterion for holonomic divisors

We show that a holonomic divisor is free if and only if applying all logarithmic derivations to a generic function with isolated critical point yields a complete intersection Artin algebra.
