Nonparametric inference on Lévy measures and copulas

In this paper nonparametric methods to assess the multivariate Lévy measure are introduced. Starting from high-frequency observations of a Lévy process $\mathbf{X}$, we construct estimators for its tail integrals and the Pareto-Lévy copula and prove weak convergence of these estimators in certain function spaces. Given n observations of increments over intervals of length $Δ_n$, the rate of convergence is $k_n^{-1/2}$ for $k_n=nΔ_n$ which is natural concerning inference on the Lévy measure. Besides extensions to nonequidistant sampling schemes analytic properties of the Pareto-Lévy copula which, to the best of our knowledge, have not been mentioned before in the literature are provided as well. We conclude with a short simulation study on the performance of our estimators and apply them to real data.

Estimating the quadratic covariation of an asynchronously observed semimartingale with jumps

We consider estimation of the quadratic (co)variation of a semimartingale from discrete observations which are irregularly spaced under high-frequency asymptotics. In the univariate setting, results by Jacod (2008) are generalized to the case of irregular observations. In the two-dimensional setup under non-synchronous observations, we derive a stable central limit theorem for the Hayashi-Yoshida estimator in the presence of jumps. We reveal how idiosyncratic and simultaneous jumps affect the asymptotic distribution. Observation times generated by Poisson processes are explicitly discussed.

Model checks for the volatility under microstructure noise

We consider the problem of testing the parametric form of the volatility for high frequency data. It is demonstrated that in the presence of microstructure noise commonly used tests do not keep the preassigned level and are inconsistent. The concept of preaveraging is used to construct new tests, which do not suffer from these drawbacks. These tests are based on a Kolmogorov-Smirnov or Cramer-von-Mises functional of an integrated stochastic process, for which weak convergence to a (conditional) Gaussian process is established. The finite sample properties of a bootstrap version of the test are illustrated by means of a simulation study.

Limit theorems for moving averages of discretized processes plus noise

This paper presents some limit theorems for certain functionals of moving averages of semimartingales plus noise which are observed at high frequency. Our method generalizes the pre-averaging approach (see [Bernoulli 15 (2009) 634--658, Stochastic Process. Appl. 119 (2009) 2249--2276]) and provides consistent estimates for various characteristics of general semimartingales. Furthermore, we prove the associated multidimensional (stable) central limit theorems. As expected, we find central limit theorems with a convergence rate $n^{-1/4}$, if $n$ is the number of observations.

Estimation of volatility functionals in the simultaneous presence of microstructure noise and jumps

We propose a new concept of modulated bipower variation for diffusion models with microstructure noise. We show that this method provides simple estimates for such important quantities as integrated volatility or integrated quarticity. Under mild conditions the consistency of modulated bipower variation is proven. Under further assumptions we prove stable convergence of our estimates with the optimal rate $n^{-{1}/{4}}$. Moreover, we construct estimates which are robust to finite activity jumps.
