Experimental demonstration of plasmon-soliton waves

Controlling low power light beam self-confinement with ultrafast response time opens up opportunities for the development of signal processing in microdevices. The combination of highly nonlinear medium with the tight confinement of plasmonic waves offers a viable but challenging configuration to reach this goal. Here, we report the experimental observation of plasmon-soliton waves propagating in a chalcogenide-based four-layer planar geometry engineered to limit plasmon propagation losses while exhibiting efficient Kerr self-focusing at moderate power. The observations reveal a strongly enhanced self-focusing undergone by a self-trapped beam propagating inside the structure. As expected, only TM polarized waves exhibit such a behavior. Different experimental arrangements are tested that unambiguously reveal the nonlinear plasmon-soliton coupling which is corroborated by numerical simulations.

Phase-Matched Second Harmonic Generation in a flux grown KTiOPO4 crystal ridge optical waveguide

Type II second-harmonic generation was performed in a 15.8-mm-long KTiOPO4 micrometric ridge waveguide with an average transversal section of 38 micrometer^2. Theoretical predictions are compared with experiments. Strong agreements are obtained for both phase-matching wavelengths and second-harmonic intensity. This work opens wide perspectives for integrated parametric optics.

LiNbO3 ridge waveguides realized by precision dicing on silicon for high efficiency second harmonic generation

Nonlinear periodically poled ridge LiNbO3 waveguides have been fabricated on silicon substrates. Components are carved with only use of a precision dicing machine without need for grinding or polishing steps. They show efficient second harmonic generation at telecommunication wavelengths with normalized conversion reaching 204%/W in a 15 mm long device. Influence of geometrical non uniformities of waveguides due to fabrication process is asserted. Components characteristics are studied notably their robustness and tunability versus temperature.

Improved nonlinear plasmonic slot waveguide: a full study

We present a full study of an improved nonlinear plasmonic slot waveguides (NPSWs) in which buffer linear dielectric layers are added between the Kerr type nonlinear dielectric core and the two semi-infinite metal regions. For TM polarized waves, the inclusion of these supplementary layers have two consequences. First, they reduced the overall losses. Secondly, they modify the types of solutions that propagate in the NPSWs adding new profiles enlarging the possibilities offered by these nonlinear waveguides. Our structure also provides longer propagation length due to the decrease of the losses compared to the simple nonlinear slot waveguide and exhibits, for well-chosen refractive index or thickness of the buffer layer, a spatial transition of its main modes that can be controlled by the power. We provide a full phase diagram of the TM wave operating regimes of these improved NPSWs. The stability of the main TM modes is then demonstrated numerically using the FDTD. We also demonstrate the existence of TE waves for both linear and nonlinear cases (for some configurations) in which the maximum intensity is located in the middle of the waveguide. This kind of structures could be fabricated and characterized experimentally due to the realistic parameters chosen to model them.

3D-PSTD for modelling second harmonic generation in periodically poled lithium niobate ridge-type waveguides

We report an application of the tri-dimensional pseudo-spectral time domain algorithm, that solves with accuracy the nonlinear Maxwell's equations, to predict second harmonic generation in lithium niobate ridge-type waveguides with high index contrast. Characteristics of the nonlinear process such as conversion efficiency as well as impact of the multimode character of the waveguide are investigated as a function of the waveguide geometry in uniformly and periodically poled medium.

Self-focused beams to couple light into a whispering-gallery mode resonator

We propose an original method to couple light into a whispering-gallery mode resonator. This method benefits from the mode selectivity and robustness of the prism-coupling along with the single-mode propagation of the fiber taper. It consists in a prism shaped crystal with a waveguide inscribed inside it. The waveguide is self-inscribed in-situ by beam self-trapping to allow an optimum coupling to a given resonator.

Roles of resonance and dark irradiance for infrared photorefractive self-focusing and solitons in bi-polar InP:Fe

This paper shows experimental evidence of photorefractive steady state self-focusing in InP:Fe for a wide range of intensities, at both 1.06 and 1.55$μ$m. To explain those results, it is shown that despite the bi-polar nature of InP:Fe where one photocarrier and one thermal carrier are to be considered, the long standing one photocarrier model for photorefractive solitons can be usefully applied. The relationship between the dark irradiance stemming out of this model and the known resonance intensity is then discussed.

Temporal behavior of two-wave-mixing in photorefractive InP:Fe versus temperature

The temporal response of two-wave-mixing in photorefractive InP:Fe under a dc electric field at different temperatures has been studied. In particular, the temperature dependence of the characteristic time constant has been studied both theoretically and experimentally, showing a strongly decreasing time constant with increasing temperature.
