NLO QCD corrections to off-shell top-antitop production with semi-leptonic decays at lepton colliders

The study of top-quark properties will be a central aspect of the physics programme of any future lepton collider. In this article, we investigate the production of top-quark pairs in the semi-leptonic decay channel in $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions, whose experimental signature is one charged lepton, jets, and missing energy. We present for the first time fiducial cross sections and differential distributions at next-to-leading-order accuracy in QCD for the full off-shell process. We find that the QCD corrections for the considered process are strongly dependent on the beam energies and range from few per cent up to more than $100\%$ (near threshold and above 1 TeV). We focus, in particular, on two scenarios: one close to threshold (365 GeV), dominated by top-pair production, and one at the TeV scale (1.5 TeV), for which irreducible-background contributions become relevant. An assessment of polarised-beam effects is also provided.

Precise predictions for double-Higgs production via vector-boson fusion

Theoretical predictions with next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD accuracy combined with the next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak (EW) corrections are presented for differential observables of the double-Higgs production process via vector-boson fusion. While the QCD corrections were previously known, the EW ones are computed here for the first time. The numerical results are obtained for a realistic experimental set-up at the LHC and are presented in the form of fiducial cross sections and differential distributions. Within this setup we find that the VBF approximation employed in the NNLO QCD correction is accurate at the sub-percent level. We find that the NLO EW corrections within the fiducial volume are $-6.1\%$, making them of almost the same order as the NLO QCD corrections. In some kinematic regions they can grow as large as $-30\%$ making them the dominant radiative corrections. When the EW corrections are combined with the NNLO QCD corrections we find a total correction of $-14.8\%$. The results presented here thus comprise the state-of-the-art theoretical predicition for the double-Higgs production via vector-boson fusion, which will be of value to the high-luminosity programme at the LHC.

Angular coefficients in W+j production at the LHC with high precision

The extraction of the W-boson mass, a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, from hadron-hadron collision requires precise theory predictions. In this regard, angular coefficients are crucial to model the dynamics of W-boson production. In this work, we provide, for the first time, angular coefficients at NNLO QCD + NLO EW accuracy for finite transverse momentum W-boson at the LHC. The corrections can reach up to 10% in certain regions of phase space. They are accompanied by a significant reduction of the scale uncertainty. This work should, besides providing reference values for theory-data comparison, provide state-of-the-art theory input for W-boson mass measurements.

Quantum integration of elementary particle processes

We apply quantum integration to elementary particle-physics processes. In particular, we look at scattering processes such as ${\rm e}^+{\rm e}^- \to q \bar q$ and ${\rm e}^+{\rm e}^- \to q \bar q' {\rm W}$. The corresponding probability distributions can be first appropriately loaded on a quantum computer using either quantum Generative Adversarial Networks or an exact method. The distributions are then integrated sing the method of Quantum Amplitude Estimation which shows a quadratic speed-up with respect to classical techniques. In simulations of noiseless quantum computers, we obtain per-cent accurate results for one- and two-dimensional integration with up to six qubits. This work paves the way towards taking advantage of quantum algorithms for the integration of high-energy processes.

Vector Boson Scattering Processes: Status and Prospects

Insight into the electroweak (EW) and Higgs sectors can be achieved through measurements of vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The scattering of EW bosons are rare processes that are precisely predicted in the Standard Model (SM) and are closely related to the Higgs mechanism. Modifications to VBS processes are also predicted in models of physics beyond the SM (BSM), for example through changes to the Higgs boson couplings to gauge bosons and the resonant production of new particles. In this review, experimental results and theoretical developments of VBS at the Large Hadron Collider, its high luminosity upgrade, and future colliders are presented.

Polarised W+j production at the LHC: a study at NNLO QCD accuracy

We study polarisation of W-bosons produced in association with one jet at the LHC. In particular, we provide all necessary theoretical ingredients for the precise extraction of polarisation fractions. To that end, we present new polarised predictions up to NNLO QCD accuracy employing the narrow-width approximation, in two phase spaces: inclusive and fiducial. We compare results in the fiducial phase space to a full off-shell computation as well as experimental data. Finally, we fit the polarisation fractions using shape templates and show that NNLO corrections significantly improve their determination.

Full NLO predictions for vector-boson scattering into Z bosons and its irreducible background at the LHC

Vector-boson scattering into two Z bosons at the LHC is a key channel for the exploration of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. It allows for the full reconstruction of the scattering process but at the price of a huge irreducible background. For the first time, we present full next-to-leading-order predictions for $pp \to e^+e^-μ^+μ^-jj+X$ including all electroweak and QCD contributions for vector-boson scattering signal and irreducible background. The results are presented in the form of cross sections and differential distributions. A particular emphasis is put on the newly computed $O(α_s^2 α^5)$ corrections.

W+c-jet production at the LHC with NNLO QCD accuracy

In these proceedings, we highlight some aspects of the recent computation of NNLO QCD corrections for W production in association with a charm jet at the LHC. The results are presented in the form of cross sections and differential distributions and are compared to ATLAS data.

Full NLO QCD corrections to off-shell ttbb production

In this article, we report on the computation of the NLO QCD corrections to ${\rm p}{\rm p} \to μ^-\barν_μ{\rm e}^+ν_{\rm e}\bar{\rm b}{\rm b}\bar{\rm b}{\rm b}$ at the LHC, which is an irreducible background to ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to{\rm t}\bar{\rm t}{\rm H}\bigl(\to{\rm b}\bar{\rm b}\bigr)$. This is the first time that a full NLO computation for a $2\to8$ process with 6 external strongly-interacting partons is made public. No approximations are used, and all off-shell and interference effects are taken into account. Cross sections and differential distributions from the full computation are compared to results obtained by using a double-pole approximation for the top quarks. The difference between the full calculation and the one using the double-pole approximation is in general below 5\% but can reach 10\% in some regions of phase space.

NNLO QCD predictions for W+c-jet production at the LHC

We study the production of a W boson in association with a c-jet at the LHC. We calculate, for the first time, the complete set of NNLO QCD corrections to the dominant CKM-diagonal contribution to this process. Both signatures, ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to μ^+ν_μ{\rm j}_{\rm c}$ and ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to μ^-\barν_μ{\rm j}_{\rm c}$ are considered. We present predictions for fiducial cross sections and differential distributions for each one of the two signatures as well as for their ratio. The theoretical predictions are compared with ATLAS measurements at $7 \; {\rm TeV}$. The results of this work are essential for the precision description of associated heavy flavor production at hadron colliders and for the determination of the strange-quark content of the proton from LHC data in NNLO QCD.

Vector-Boson Scattering at the LHC: unravelling the Electroweak sector

Vector-boson scattering (VBS) processes probe the innermost structure of electroweak interactions in the Standard Model, and provide a unique sensitivity for new physics phenomena affecting the gauge sector. In this review, we report on the salient aspects of this class of processes, both from the theory and experimental point of view. We start by discussing recent achievements relevant for their theoretical description, some of which have set important milestones in improving the precision and accuracy of the corresponding simulations. We continue by covering the development of experimental techniques aimed at detecting these rare processes and improving the signal sensitivity over large backgrounds. We then summarise the details of the most relevant VBS signatures and review the related measurements available to date, along with their comparison with Standard-Model predictions. We conclude by discussing the perspective at the upcoming Large Hadron Collider runs and at future hadron facilities.

NLO QCD and EW corrections to vector-boson scattering into ZZ at the LHC

We present the first calculation of the full next-to-leading-order electroweak and QCD corrections for vector-boson scattering (VBS) into a pair of Z bosons at the LHC. We consider specifically the process ${\rm pp\to e^{+}e^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}jj}+X$ at orders $\mathcal{O}(α^7)$ and $\mathcal{O}(α_sα^6)$ and take all off-shell and interference contributions into account. Owing to the presence of enhanced Sudakov logarithms, the electroweak corrections amount to $-16\%$ of the leading-order electroweak fiducial cross section and induce significant shape distortions of differential distributions. The QCD corrections on the other hand are larger ($+24\%$) than typical QCD corrections in VBS. This originates from considering the full computation including tri-boson contributions in a rather inclusive phase space. We also provide a leading-order analysis of all contributions to the cross section for ${\rm pp \to e^{+}e^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}jj}+X$ in a realistic setup.

Exploring the scattering of vector bosons at LHCb

In this letter, I propose a strategy to measure vector-boson scattering (VBS) at the LHCb experiment. The typical VBS topology at hadron colliders features two energetic back-to-back jets with large rapidities and two gauge bosons produced centrally. In this article, I show that such a topology can actually be probed by the LHCb detector. In particular, tagging only one of the two jets in combination with two same-sign leptons allows for a measurement with upcoming luminosities. I present an illustrative event selection where cross sections and differential distributions are computed for VBS and its irreducible background.

Fixed-order and merged parton-shower predictions for WW and WWj production at the LHC including NLO QCD and EW corrections

First, we present a combined analysis of ${\rm p}{\rm p} \to μ^+ ν_μ{\rm e}^- \bar ν_{\rm e}$ and ${\rm p}{\rm p} \to μ^+ ν_μ{\rm e}^- \bar ν_{\rm e} {\rm j}$ at next-to-leading order, including both QCD and electroweak corrections. Second, we provide all-order predictions for ${\rm p}{\rm p} \to μ^+ ν_μ{\rm e}^- \bar ν_{\rm p}+\mathrm{jets}$ using merged parton-shower simulations that also include approximate EW effects. A fully inclusive sample for WW production is compared to the fixed-order computations for exclusive zero- and one-jet selections. The various higher-order effects are studied in detail at the level of cross sections and differential distributions for realistic experimental set-ups. Our study confirms that merged predictions are significantly more stable than the fixed-order ones in particular regarding ratios between the two processes.

Vector bosons and jets at the LHC

In these proceedings I review recent theoretical predictions describing processes involving vector bosons and jets at the LHC. Such processes possess very distinctive phenomenologies and their theoretical accuracy is very different. I focus here on three illustrative cases: the production of a Z boson in association with a b jet, W-pair production in association with a jet, and vector-boson scattering. Some of these theoretical results are also compared to experimental data.

An event generator for same-sign W-boson scattering at the LHC including electroweak corrections

In this article we present an event generator based on the Monte Carlo program Powheg in combination with the matrix-element generator Recola. We apply it to compute NLO electroweak corrections to same-sign W-boson scattering, which have been shown to be large at the LHC. The event generator allows for the generation of unweighted events including the effect of the NLO electroweak corrections matched to a QED parton shower and interfaced to a QCD parton shower. In view of the expected experimental precision of future measurements, the use of such a tool will be indispensable.
