Uniform bounds and uncertainty for asymptotics of representations of $p$-adic ${\rm GL}_N$

We prove two results on the growth of dimensions of fixed vectors of representations $\pi$ of $p$-adic ${\rm GL}_N$ under principal congruence subgroups: First, a uniform bound on the growth of fixed vectors in terms of the GK-dimension $\pi$, which we extend to a uniform bound on the Harish-Chandra--Howe coefficients. Second, for $\pi$ unitary, a quantitative relationship between the GK-dimension of $\pi$ and the rate of decay of its matrix coefficients. These results are independent of one another and proved in the framework of the Langlands and Zelevinsky classifications.

Root Number Equidistribution for Self-Dual Automorphic Representations on $GL_N$

Let $F$ be a totally real field. We study the root numbers $\epsilon(1/2, \pi)$ of self-dual cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_{2N}/F$ with conductor $\mathfrak n$ and regular integral infinitesimal character $\lambda$. If $\pi$ is orthogonal, then $\epsilon(1/2, \pi)$ is known to be identically one. We show that for symplectic representations, the root numbers $\epsilon(1/2, \pi)$ equidistribute between~$\pm 1$ as $\lambda \to \infty$, provided that there exists a prime dividing $\mathfrak n$ with power $>N$.We also study conjugate self-dual representations with respect to a CM extension $E/F$, where we obtain a similar result under the assumption that $\mathfrak n$ is divisible by a large enough power of a ramified prime and provide evidence that equidistribution does not hold otherwise. In cases where there are known to be associated Galois representations, we deduce root number equidistribution results for the corresponding families of $N$-dimensional Galois representations. The proof generalizes a classical argument for the case of $\mathrm{GL}_2/\mathbb Q$ by using Arthur's trace formula and the endoscopic classification for quasisplit classical groups similarly to a previous work (arxiv:2212.12138). The main new technical difficulty is evaluating endoscopic transfers of the required test functions at central elements.

Cohomology of Fuchsian groups and Fourier interpolation

We give a new proof of a Fourier interpolation result first proved by Radchenko-Viazovska, deriving it from a vanishing result of the first cohomology of a Fuchsian group with coefficients in the Weil representation.

A Note on Large Sums of Divisor-Bounded Multiplicative Functions

Given a multiplicative function $f$, we let $S(x,f)=\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)$ be the associated partial sum. In this note, we show that lower bounds on partial sums of divisor-bounded functions result in lower bounds on the partial sums associated to their products. More precisely, we let $f_j$, $j=1,2$ be such that $|f_j(n)|\leq \tau(n)^\kappa$ for some $\kappa\in\mathbb{N}$, and assume their partial sums satisfy $\left|S(x_j,f_j)\right|\geq \eta x_j (\log x_j)^{2^\kappa-1}$ for some $x_1, x_2\gg 1$ and $\eta>\max_j\{(\log x_j)^{-1/100}\}$. We then show that there exists $x\geq \min\{x_1, x_2\}^{\xi^2}$ such that $\left|S(x,f_1f_2)\right|\geq \xi x (\log x)^{2^{2\kappa}-1}$, where $\xi=C\eta^{1+2^{\kappa+3}}$ for some absolute constant $C>0$.

The Cohomological Sarnak-Xue Density Hypothesis for $SO_5$

We prove the cohomological version of the Sarnak--Xue Density Hypothesis for $SO_{5}$ over a totally real field and for inner forms split at all finite places. The proof relies on recent lines of work in the Langlands program: (i) Arthur's Endoscopic Classification of Representations of classical groups, extended to inner forms by Ta\"ibi and its explicit description for $SO_{5}$ by Schmidt, and (ii) the Generalized Ramanujan--Petersson Theorem, proved for cohomological self-dual cuspidal representations of general linear groups. We give applications to the growth of cohomology of arithmetic manifolds, density-Ramanujan complexes, cutoff phenomena and optimal strong approximation.

Large Sums of Fourier Coefficients of Cusp Forms

Let $N$ be a fixed positive integer, and let $f\in S_k(N)$ be a primitive cusp form given by the Fourier expansion $f(z)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \lambda_f(n)n^{\frac{k-1}{2}}e(nz)$. We consider the partial sum $S(x,f)=\sum_{n\leq x}\lambda_f(x)$. It is conjectured that $S(x,f)=o(x\log x)$ in the range $x\geq k^{\epsilon}$. Lamzouri proved in arXiv:1703.10582 [math.NT] that this is true under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) for $L(s,f)$. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture holds under a weaker assumption than GRH. In particular, we prove that given $\epsilon>(\log k)^{-\frac{1}{8}}$ and $1\leq T\leq (\log k)^{\frac{1}{200}}$, we have $S(x,f)\ll \frac{x\log x}{T}$ in the range $x\geq k^{\epsilon}$ provided that $L(s,f)$ has no more than $\epsilon^2\log k/5000$ zeros in the region $\left\{s\,:\, \Re(s)\geq \frac34, \, |\Im(s)-\phi| \leq \frac14\right\}$ for every real number $\phi$ with $|\phi|\leq T$.

Mod $\ell$ gamma factors and a converse theorem for finite general linear groups

The local converse theorem for Rankin-Selberg gamma factors of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ proved by Piatetski-Shapiro over $\mathbb{C}$ no longer holds after reduction modulo $\ell \neq p$. To remedy this, we construct new $\mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_m$ gamma factors valued in arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}[1/p, \zeta_p]$-algebras for Whittaker-type representations, show that they satisfy a functional equation, and then prove a $\mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_{n-1}$ converse theorem for irreducible cuspidal representations. In the $\mathrm{GL}_2 \times \mathrm{GL}_1$ case, we define an alternative "new" gamma factor, which takes values in $k$ and satisfies a converse theorem that matches the converse theorem in characteristic $0$.

Statistics of Cohomological Automorphic Representations on Unitary Groups via the Endoscopic Classification

Consider the family of automorphic representations on a unitary group with cohomological factor $\pi_0$ at infinity and given split level. We compute statistics of this family as the level goes to infinity. For unramified unitary groups and a large class of $\pi_0$, we use the endoscopic classification of representations to compute the exact leading term for counts of representations and averages of Satake parameters. The bounds on our error terms are similar to previous work by Shin-Templier who studied the case of discrete series at infinity. We also prove new upper bounds for all cohomological representations. This has many corollaries: new exact asymptotics on the growth of cohomology in certain towers of locally symmetric spaces, an averaged Sato-Tate equidistribution law for spectral families with specific non-tempered cohomological components at infinity, and the Sarnak-Xue density hypothesis for cohomological representations at infinity on all unitary groups of rank $\geq 5$.

Limit Multiplicity For Unitary Groups and The Stable Trace Formula

We give upper bounds on limit multiplicities of certain non-tempered representations of unitary groups $U(a,b)$. These include some cohomological representations, and we give applications to the growth of cohomology of cocompact arithmetic subgroups of unitary groups. The representations considered are transfers of products of characters and discrete series on endoscopic groups, and the bounds are obtained using Arthur's stabilization of the trace formula and the endoscopic classification of representations due to Mok and Kaletha-Minguez-Shin-White.
