Lie Groupoids and Differentiable Stacks

This is a concise introduction to the theory of Lie groupoids, with emphasis in their role as models for stacks. After some preliminaries, we review the foundations on Lie groupoids, and we carefully study equivalences and proper groupoids. Differentiable stacks are geometric objects which have manifolds and orbifolds as special instances, and can be presented as the transverse geometry of a Lie groupoid. Two Lie groupoids are equivalent if they are presenting the same stack, and proper groupoids are presentations of separated stacks, which by the linearization theorem are locally modeled by linear actions of compact groups. We discuss all these notions in detail. Our treatment diverges from the expositions already in the literature, looking for a complementary insight over this rich theory that is still in development.

Riemannian metrics on Lie groupoids

We introduce a notion of metric on a Lie groupoid, compatible with multiplication, and we study its properties. We show that many families of Lie groupoids admit such metrics, including the important class of proper Lie groupoids. The exponential map of these metrics allow us to establish a Linearization Theorem for Riemannian groupoids, obtaining both a simpler proof and a stronger version of the Weinstein-Zung Linearization Theorem for proper Lie groupoids. This new notion of metric has a simplicial nature which will be explored in future papers of this series.

On the homotopy type of a cofibred category

In this paper we describe two ways on which cofibred categories give rise to bisimplicial sets. The "fibred nerve" is a natural extension of Segal's classical nerve of a category, and it constitutes an alternative simplicial description of the homotopy type of the total category. If the fibration is splitting, then one can construct the "cleaved nerve", a smaller variant which emerges from a distinguished closed cleavage. We interpret some classical theorems by Thomason and Quillen in terms of our constructions, and use the fibred and cleaved nerve to establish new results on homotopy and homology of small categories.

On the loop space of a 2-category

Every small category $C$ has a classifying space $BC$ associated in a natural way. This construction can be extended to other contexts and set up a fruitful interaction between categorical structures and homotopy types. In this paper we study the classifying space $B_2C$ of a 2-category $C$ and prove that, under certain conditions, the loop space $Ω_c B_2C$ can be recovered up to homotopy from the endomorphisms of a given object. We also present several subsidiary results that we develop to prove our main theorem.
