Geometric differentiation of simplicial manifolds

We provide a complete geometric solution to the problem of differentiating simplicial manifolds, extending classical Lie theory and complementing existing homotopical and formal approaches within a unifying framework. First, we establish a normal form theorem setting a system of compatible tubular neighborhoods. Building on this description, we identify a differentiating ideal in the algebra of cochains, prove that the quotient is semi-free, and interpret it as the Chevalley-Eilenberg algebra of the thus defined higher Lie algebroid. As an application, we introduce a higher version of the van Est map and prove a van Est isomorphism theorem in cohomology, under natural connectivity assumptions. Finally, we identify the algebraic mechanism underlying geometric differentiation as a monoidal refinement of the dual Dold-Kan correspondence, providing a conceptual explanation of the construction and relating it to earlier homotopical and functor-of-points approaches.

Higher Vector Bundles

We introduce higher analogs for cleavages in the context of (Kan) simplicial fibrations. We apply them to obtain geometric models for representations up to homotopy of (higher) Lie groupoids. Concretely, we set an equivalence between representations up to homotopy and simplicial vector bundles endowed with a cleavage. Our result is an incarnation of the Higher Grothendieck Correspondence, it can be seen as a relative Dold-Kan Theorem and extends earlier work of Gracia-Saz and Mehta on VB-groupoids.

On the cohomology of differentiable stacks

Morita equivalence classes of Lie groupoids serve as models for differentiable stacks, which are higher spaces in differential geometry, generalizing manifolds and orbifolds. Representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids provide a higher analog of classical representations and play a significant role in Poisson geometry. In this paper, we prove that the cohomology with coefficients in a representation up to homotopy is a Morita invariant, and therefore an invariant of the underlying stack. This result was inspired by the 2-term case, previously developed by del Hoyo and Ortiz, and it relies on the simplicial approach to representations up to homotopy, recently introduced by del Hoyo and Trentinaglia. As a subsidiary result, we include a proof of the cohomological descent for higher Lie groupoids.

Lie Groupoids

A Lie groupoid can be thought of as a generalization of a Lie group in which the multiplication is only defined for certain pairs of elements. From another perspective, Lie groupoids can be regarded as manifolds endowed with a type of action codifying internal and external symmetries. The vigorous development of their theory in the last few decades has been largely stimulated by their connections with such areas as Poisson geometry and non-commutative geometry, as well as several topics in mathematical physics, including classical mechanics, quantization and topological field theories. This article is an overview on Lie groupoids, including basic definitions, key examples and constructions, and topics such as actions and representations, local models, Morita equivalence and cohomology.

Poisson double structures

We introduce Poisson double algebroids, and the equivalent concept of double Lie bialgebroid, which arise as second-order infinitesimal counterparts of Poisson double groupoids. We develop their underlying Lie theory, showing how these objects are related by differentiation and integration. We use these results to revisit Lie 2-bialgebras by means of Poisson double structures.

On invariant linearization of Lie groupoids

The Linearization Theorem for proper Lie groupoids organizes and generalizes several results for classic geometries. Despite the various approaches and recent works on the subject, the problem of understanding invariant linearization remains somehow open. We address it here, by first giving a counter-example to a previous conjecture, and then proving a sufficient criterion that uses compatible complete metrics and covers the case of proper group actions. We also show a partial converse that fixes and extends previous results in the literature.

On Hausdorff integrations of Lie algebroids

We present Hausdorff versions for Lie Integration Theorems 1 and 2 and apply them to study Hausdorff symplectic groupoids arising from Poisson manifolds. To prepare for these results we include a discussion on Lie equivalences and propose an algebraic approach to holonomy. We also include subsidiary results, such as a generalization of the integration of subalgebroids to the non-wide case, and explore in detail the case of foliation groupoids.

The general linear 2-groupoid

We deal with the symmetries of a (2-term) graded vector space or bundle. Our first theorem shows that they define a (strict) Lie 2-groupoid in a natural way. Our second theorem explores the construction of nerves for Lie 2-categories, showing that it yields simplicial manifolds if the 2-cells are invertible. Finally, our third and main theorem shows that smooth pseudofunctors into our general linear 2-groupoid classify 2-term representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids.

Geodesics on Riemannian stacks

Metrics on Lie groupoids and differentiable stacks have been introduced recently, extending the Riemannian geometry of manifolds and orbifolds to more general singular spaces. Here we continue that theory, studying stacky curves on Riemannian stacks, measuring their length using stacky metrics, and introducing stacky geodesics. Our main results show that the length of stacky curves measure distances on the orbit space, characterize stacky geodesics as locally minimizing curves, and establish a stacky version of Hopf-Rinow Theorem. We include a concise overview that bypasses nonessential technicalities, and we lay stress on the examples of orbit spaces of isometric actions and leaf spaces of Riemannian foliations.

Discrete dynamics and differentiable stacks

In this paper we relate the study of actions of discrete groups over connected manifolds to that of their orbit spaces seen as differentiable stacks. We show that the orbit stack of a discrete dynamical system on a simply connected manifold encodes the dynamics up to conjugation and inversion. We also prove a generalization of this result for arbitrary discrete groups and non-simply connected manifolds, and relate it to the covering theory of stacks. As applications, we obtain a geometric version of Rieffel's theorem on irrational rotations of the circle, we compute the stack-theoretic fundamental group of hyperbolic toral automorphisms, and we revisit the classification of lens spaces.

On deformations of compact foliations

We combine classic stability results for foliations with recent results on deformations of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids to provide a cohomological characterization for rigidity of compact foliations on compact manifolds.

Riemannian metrics on differentiable stacks

We study Riemannian metrics on Lie groupoids in the relative setting. We show that any split fibration between proper groupoids can be made Riemannian, and we use these metrics to linearize proper groupoid fibrations. As an application, we derive rigidity theorems for Lie groupoids, which unify, simplify and improve similar results for classic geometries. Then we establish the Morita invariance for our metrics, introduce a notion for metrics on stacks, and use them to construct stacky tubular neighborhoods and to prove a stacky Ehresmann theorem.

Morita equivalences of vector bundles

We study vector bundles over Lie groupoids, known as VB-groupoids, and their induced geometric objects over differentiable stacks. We establish a fundamental theorem that characterizes VB-Morita maps in terms of fiber and basic data, and use it to prove the Morita invariance of VB-cohomology, with implications to deformation cohomology of Lie groupoids and of classic geometries. We discuss applications of our theory to Poisson geometry, providing a new insight over Marsden-Weinstein reduction and the integration of Dirac structures. We conclude by proving that the derived category of VB-groupoids is a Morita invariant, which leads to a notion of VB-stacks, and solves (an instance of) an open question on representations up to homotopy.

Complete connections on fiber bundles

Every smooth fiber bundle admits a complete (Ehresmann) connection. This result appears in several references, with a proof on which we have found a gap, that does not seem possible to remedy. In this note we provide a definite proof for this fact, explain the problem with the previous one, and illustrate with examples. We also establish a version of the theorem involving Riemannian submersions.

Vector bundles over Lie groupoids and algebroids

We study VB-groupoids and VB-algebroids, which are vector bundles in the realm of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. Through a suitable reformulation of their definitions, we elucidate the Lie theory relating these objects, i.e., their relation via differentiation and integration. We also show how to extend our techniques to describe the more general Lie theory underlying double Lie algebroids and LA-groupoids.
