Observing a Lévy process up to a stopping time

It is proved that the law of a possibly killed Lévy process $X$, seen up to and including (resp. up to strictly before) a stopping time, determines already the law of $X$ (resp. up to a compound Poisson component and killing).

Independence times for iid sequences, random walks and Lévy processes

For a sequence in discrete time having stationary independent values (respectively, random walk) $X$, those random times $R$ of $X$ are characterized set-theoretically, for which the strict post-$R$ sequence (respectively, the process of the increments of $X$ after $R$) is independent of the history up to $R$. For a Lévy process $X$ and a random time $R$ of $X$, reasonably useful sufficient conditions and a partial necessary condition on $R$ are given, for the process of the increments of $X$ after $R$ to be independent of the history up to $R$.

Excursions of a spectrally negative Lévy process from a two-point set

Let $a\in (0,\infty)$. For a spectrally negative Lévy process $X$ with infinite variation paths the resolvent of the process killed on hitting the two-point set $V=\{-a,a\}$ is identified. When further $X$ has no diffusion component the Laplace transforms of the entrance laws of the excursion measures of $X$ from $V$ are determined. This is then applied to establishing the Laplace transform of the amount of time that elapses between the last visit of $X$ to a given point $x$, before hitting some other point $y>x$, and the hitting time of $y$. All the expressions are explicit and tractable in the standard fluctuation quantities associated to $X$.

On the existence of a minimal generating set for $σ$-algebras

Does there exist for any $σ$-algebra a minimal (with respect to inclusion) generating set? We formulate this problem and answer it in the very special instance of partition generated and standard measurable spaces, the general case remaining open.

On the informational structure in optimal dynamic stochastic control

We formulate a very general framework for optimal dynamic stochastic control problems which allows for a control-dependent informational structure. The issue of informational consistency is investigated. Bellman's principle is formulated and proved. In a series of related results, we expound on the informational structure in the context of (completed) natural filtrations of stochastic processes.

A temporal factorization at the maximum for spectrally negative positive self-similar Markov processes

For a spectrally negative positive self-similar Markov process with an a.s. finite overall supremum we provide, in tractable detail, a kind of conditional Wiener-Hopf factorization at the maximum of the absorption time at zero, the conditioning being on the overall supremum and the jump at the overall supremum. In a companion result the Laplace transform of said absorption time (on the event that the process does not go above a given level) is identified under no other assumptions (such as the process admitting a recurrent extension and/or hitting zero continuously), generalizing some existent results in the literature.

First passage problems for upwards skip-free random walks via the $Φ,W,Z$ paradigm

We develop the theory of the $W$ and $Z$ scale functions for right-continuous (upwards skip-free) discrete-time discrete-space random walks, along the lines of the analogue theory for spectrally negative Lévy processes. Notably, we introduce for the first time in this context the one and two-parameter scale functions $Z$, which appear for example in the joint problem of deficit at ruin and time of ruin, and in problems concerning the walk reflected at an upper barrier. Comparisons are made between the various theories of scale functions as one makes time and/or space continuous. The theory is shown to be fruitful by providing a convenient unified framework for studying dividends-capital injection problems under various objectives, for the so-called compound binomial risk model of actuarial science.

First passage upwards for state dependent-killed spectrally negative Lévy processes

For a spectrally negative Lévy process (snLp) $X$, killed according to a rate that is a function $ω$ of its position, we analyse the exit probability of the one-sided upwards-passage problem. When $ω$ is strictly positive, this problem is related to the determination of the Laplace transform of the first passage time upwards for $X$ that has been time-changed by the inverse of the additive functional $\int_0^\cdot ω(X_u)du$. In particular our findings thus shed extra light on related results concerning first passage times upwards (downwards) of spectrally negative positive self-similar Markov processes (continuous state branching processes).

Another characterization of homogeneous Poisson processes

For a general renewal process $N$ (allowing delay, defect and multiple simultaneous arrivals) the independence of the first renewal epochs of the marked processes got from $N$ by Bernoulli $0$/$1$ thinning is characterized. This independence is well-known to hold true in the case of homogeneous Poisson processes; by way of corollary one obtains the interesting observation that, when coupled with some minimal extra conditions, it in fact already identifies them. The proof is analytic in character.

Ruin under stochastic dependence between premium and claim arrivals

We investigate, focusing on the ruin probability, an adaptation of the Cramer-Lundberg model for the surplus process of an insurance company, in which, conditionally on their intensities, the two mixed Poisson processes governing the arrival times of the premiums and of the claims respectively, are independent. Such a model exhibits a stochastic dependence between the aggregate premium and claim amount processes. An explicit expression for the ruin probability is obtained when the claim and premium sizes are exponentially distributed.

A couple of remarks on the convergence of $σ$-fields on probability spaces

The following modes of convergence of sub-$σ$-fields on a given probability space have been studied in the literature: weak convergence, strong convergence, convergence with respect to the Hausdorff metric, almost-sure convergence, set-theoretic convergence, monotone convergence. It is noted that all preserve independence, and all are invariant under passage to an equivalent probability measure. Partial results for the case of operator-norm convergence obtain.

Copulas for maxmin systems

Under a mild condition we give closed-form expressions for copulas of systems that consist of maxima and of minima of subvectors of a given random vector $X$ with continuous marginals. Said expressions appear explicit in the copula of $X$ and the mentioned condition is for example met when the law of $X$ admits a strictly positive density with respect to Lebesgue measure. In the i.i.d. case these "maxmin" copulae become universal and the conditions on their validity can be dropped entirely. Our main motivation comes from applications to shock models that arise in multivariate survival theory. Another application is to order statistics copulas.

Proper two-sided exits of a Lévy process

It is proved that the two-sided exits of a Levy process are proper, i.e. not a.s. equal to their one-sided counterparts, if and only if said process is not a subordinator or the negative of a subordinator. Furthermore, Levy processes are characterized, for which the supports of the first exit times from bounded annuli, simultaneously on each of the two events corresponding to exit at the lower and the upper boundary, respectively are unbounded, contain $0$, are equal to $[0,\infty)$.

Fluctuation theory for upwards skip-free Lévy chains

A fluctuation theory and, in particular, a theory of scale functions is developed for upwards skip-free Lévy chains, i.e. for right-continuous random walks embedded into continuous time as compound Poisson processes. This is done by analogy to the spectrally negative class of Lévy processes -- several results, however, can be made more explicit/exhaustive in our compound Poisson setting. In particular, the scale functions admit a linear recursion, of constant order when the support of the jump measure is bounded, by means of which they can be calculated -- some examples are considered.

Markov chain approximations to scale functions of Lévy processes

We introduce a general algorithm for the computation of the scale functions of a spectrally negative Lévy process $X$, based on a natural weak approximation of $X$ via upwards skip-free continuous-time Markov chains with stationary independent increments. The algorithm consists of evaluating a finite linear recursion with its (nonnegative) coefficients given explicitly in terms of the Lévy triplet of $X$. Thus it is easy to implement and numerically stable. Our main result establishes sharp rates of convergence of this algorithm providing an explicit link between the semimartingale characteristics of $X$ and its scale functions, not unlike the one-dimensional Itô diffusion setting, where scale functions are expressed in terms of certain integrals of the coefficients of the governing SDE.

A note on the times of first passage for `nearly right-continuous' random walks

A natural extension of a right-continuous integer-valued random walk is one which can jump to the right by one or two units. First passage times above a given fixed level then admit a tractable Laplace transform (probability generating function). Explicit expressions for the probabilities that the respective overshoots are either $0$ or $1$, according as the random walk crosses a given level for the first time either continuously or not, also obtain. An interesting non-obvious observation, which follows from the analysis, is that any such (non-degenerate) random walk will, eventually in $n\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$, always be more likely to pass over the level $n$ for the first time with overshoot zero, rather than one. Some applications are considered.

Coupled channel analysis of the rho meson decay in lattice QCD

We employ a variational basis with a number of $\bar{q}q$ and $ππ$ lattice interpolating fields with quantum numbers of the $ρ$ resonance to extract the discrete energy spectrum in a finite volume. In the elastic region, this spectrum is related to the phase shift of the continuum scattering amplitude by Lüscher's formula and the relation allows the extraction of resonance parameters from the spectrum calculation. The simulations are performed at three different total momenta of the coupled $\bar q q-ππ$ system, which allows us to extract the p-wave scattering phase at five values of pion relative momenta near the resonance region. The effective range formula describes the phase-shift dependence nicely and we extract the resonance mass $m_ρ=792(7)(8)$ MeV and the coupling $g_{ρππ}=5.13(20)$ at our $m_π\simeq 266 $MeV. The coupling $g_{ρππ}$ is directly related to the width of the $ρ$ meson and our value is close to the value derived from the experimental width. The simulations are performed using dynamical gauge configurations with two mass-degenerate flavors of tree-level improved clover-Wilson fermions. Correlation functions are calculated using the recently proposed distillation method with Laplacian Heaviside (LapH) smearing of quarks, which enables flexible calculations, in many cases with unprecedented accuracy.
