Real Toric Varieties: Interactions between their Geometry and their Topology

In the present article, we investigate the topology of real toric varieties, especially those whose torus is not split over the field of real numbers. We describe some canonical fibrations associated to their real loci. Then, we establish various properties of their cohomology provided that their real loci are compact and smooth. For instance, we compute their Betti numbers, show that their cohomology is totally algebraic, and extend a criterion of orientability. In addition, we provide the topological classification of equivariant embeddings of non-split tridimensional tori.

Obstructions for the existence of separating morphisms and totally real pencils

It goes back to Ahlfors that a real algebraic curve $C$ admits a separating morphism $f$ to the complex projective line if and only if the real part of the curve disconnects its complex part, i.e. the curve is \textit{separating}. The degree of such $f$ is bounded from below by the number $l$ of real connected components of $ \mathbb{R} C$. The sharpness of this bound is not a priori clear. We prove that real algebraic separating curves, embedded in some ambient surface and with $l$ bounded in a certain way, do not admit separating morphisms of lowest possible degree. Moreover, this result of non-existence can be applied to show that certain real separating plane curves of degree $d$, do not admit totally real pencils of curves of degree $k$ such that $kd \leq l$.

Betti numbers of real semistable degenerations via real logarithmic geometry

Let $X\rightarrow C$ be a totally real semistable degeneration over a smooth real curve $C$ with degenerate fiber $X_0$. Assuming that the irreducible components of $X_0$ are simple from a cohomological point of view, we give a bound for the individual Betti numbers of a real smooth fiber near $0$ in terms of the complex geometry of the degeneration. This generalizes previous work of Renaudineau-Shaw, obtained via combinatorial techniques, for tropical degenerations of hypersurfaces in smooth toric varieties. The main new ingredient is the use of real logarithmic geometry, which allows to work with not necessarily toric degenerations.

Real-fibered morphisms of del Pezzo surfaces and conic bundles

It goes back to Ahlfors that a real algebraic curve admits a real-fibered morphism to the projective line if and only if the real part of the curve disconnects its complex part. Inspired by this result, we are interested in characterising real algebraic varieties of dimension $n$ admitting real-fibered morphisms to the $n$-dimensional projective space. We present a criterion to classify real-fibered morphisms that arise as finite surjective linear projections from an embedded variety which relies on topological linking numbers. We address special attention to real algebraic surfaces. We classify all real-fibered morphisms from real del Pezzo surfaces to the projective plane and determine which such morphisms arise as the composition of a projective embedding with a linear projection. Furthermore, we give some insights in the case of real conic bundles.

Real algebraic curves on real del Pezzo surfaces

The study of the topology of real algebraic varieties dates back to the work of Harnack, Klein and Hilbert in the 19th century; in particular, the isotopy type classification of real algebraic curves in real toric surfaces is a classical subject that has undergone considerable evolution. On the other hand, not much is known for more general ambient surfaces. We take a step forward in the study of topological types classification of real algebraic curves on non-toric surfaces focusing on real del Pezzo surfaces of degree $1$ and $2$ with multi-components real part. We use degeneration methods and real enumerative geometry in combination with variations of classical methods to give obstructions to topological types and to give constructions of real algebraic curves with prescribed topology.

Real algebraic curves of bidegree (5,5) on the quadric ellipsoid

We complete the topological classification of real algebraic non-singular curves of bidegree $(5, 5)$ on the quadric ellipsoid. We show in particular that previously known restrictions form a complete system for this bidegree. Therefore, the main part of the paper concerns the construction of real algebraic curves. Our strategy is first to reduce to the construction of curves in the second Hirzebruch surface by degenerating the quadric ellipsoid to the quadratic cone. Next, we combine different classical construction methods on toric surfaces, such as Dessin d'enfants and and Viro's patchworking method.
