The electrostatic interaction of an external charged system with a metal surface: a simplified density functional theory approach

As a first step to meet the challenge to calculate the electronic structure and total energy of charged states of atoms and molecules adsorbed on ultrathin-insulating films supported by a metallic substrate using density functional theory (DFT), we have developed a simplified new DFT scheme that only describes the electrostatic interaction of an external charged system with a metal surface. This purely electrostatic interaction is obtained from the assumption that the electron densities of the two fragments (charged system and metal surface) are non-overlapping and neglecting non-local exchange correlation effects such as the van der Waals interactions between the two fragments. In addition, the response of the metal surface to the electrostatic potential from the charged system is treated to linear order, whereas the charged system is treated fully within DFT. In particular, we consider the classical perfect conductor (PC) model for the metal response, although our formalism is not limited to this approximation. The successful computational implementation of this new methodology and the PC model is exemplified by the case of a Na$^{+}$ cation outside a metal surface.

The nature of the observed free-electron-like state in a PTCDA monolayer on Ag(111)

A free-electron like band has recently been observed in a monolayer of PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride) molecules on Ag(111) by two-photon photoemission [Schwalb et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 146801 (2008)] and scanning tunneling spectroscopy [Temirov et al., Nature 444, 350 (2006)]. Using density functional theory calculations, we find that the observed free-electron like band originates from the Shockley surface state band being dramatically shifted up in energy by the interaction with the adsorbed molecules while it acquires also a substantial admixture with a molecular band.

Theory of Inelastic Electron Tunneling from a Localized Spin in the Impulsive Approximation

A simple expression for the conductance steps in the inelastic electron tunneling from spin excitations in a single magnetic atom adsorbed on a non-magnetic metal surfaces is derived. The inelastic coupling between the tunneling electron and the spin is via the exchange coupling and is treated in an impulsive approximation using the Tersoff-Hamann approximation for the tunneling between the tip and the sample. Our results for conductance steps justify the analysis carried out by Hirjebedin et al. [Science 317, 1199 (2007)] of observed step-like conductances by inelastic electron tunneling from spin excitations in a single magnetic adatom using a simple spin matrix element. In addition, our result gives a simple expression for the magnitudes of conductance steps and their lateral spatial variation with respect to the tip position, which can be calculated directly from spin-polarized wave functions at the Fermi level of the sample.

The nature of highly anisotropic free-electron-like states in a glycinate monolayer on Cu(100)

The free-electron-like state observed in a scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of a chiral p(2x4) monolayer of glycinate ions on the Cu(100) surface [K. Kanazawa et al, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 129, 740 (2007)] is shown from density functional theory calculations to originate from a Cu Shockley surface state at the surface Brillouin zone boundary of the clean surface with highly anisotropic dispersion. The presence of the glycinate ions on the surface causes a dramatically enhanced tunneling into this surface state that is otherwise not observed in tunneling on the bare surface.

Vibrational assignments and line shapes in inelastic tunnelling spectroscopy: H on Cu(100)

We have carried out a computational study of the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum (IETS) of the two vibrational modes of a single hydrogen atom on a Cu(100) surface in a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) junction. This study addresses key issues about vibrational assignment and line shape of observed peaks in IETS within the framework of density functional theory calculations and the Lorente-Persson theory for STM-IETS. We argue that the observation of only a single, broad peak in the STM-IETS [L.J. Lauhon and W. Ho, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 4566 (2000)] is not caused by any symmetry restrictions or any cancellation between inelastic and elastic vibrational contributions for one of the two modes but is due to strongly overlapping superposition of the contributions from the two modes caused by the rather large instrumental broadening and the narrow vibrational energy separation between the modes. In particular, we find that this broadening and the large asymmetry of the vibrational line shapes gives rise to substantial apparent vibrational energy shifts of the two modes and decrease their apparent energy separation.

Quantum size effect in Pb(100) films: the role of symmetry and implication for film growth

We show from density-functional calculations that Pb(100) thin films exhibit quantum size effect with a bilayer periodicity in film energies, film relaxations, and work functions, which originate from different symmetry of the stacking geometry of odd and even layer films. The bilayer periodicity of the film energy is argued to survive on a semiconductor substrate, which should allow the growth of ``magically'' thick even-layer Pb(100) films. Furthermore, it is found that the quantum well states in a simple metal film can be classified into $σ$-bonded and $π$-bonded states, which quantize independently.

Adsorption-induced constraint on delocalization of electron states in an Au chain on NiAl(110)

We have carried out a density functional study of the localized constraint on the delocalized, unoccupied resonance states in a mono atomic Au chain on a NiAl(110) surface by adsorption of a CO molecule on one of the adatoms in the chain. This constraint was observed recently by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. The repulsive interaction of the occupied 5$σ$ molecular state with the unoccupied, resonance state in a Au adatom in the chain is found to break the degeneracy of the Au adatom-induced resonance states and to disrupt their delocalization in the chain.
