Four-algebraic extension of the IIB matrix model

We make a four-algebraic extension of the IIB matrix model. The extension can be made by any Lie 4-algebra. The four-algebraic model has the same supersymmetry as the IIB matrix model, and hence as type IIB superstring theory. The four-algebraic model contains twelve bosonic matrices; two of these will be identified with two extra dimensions that characterize F-theory. We construct a Lie 4-algebra that incorporates $u(N)$ Lie algebra and analyze the model explicitly by choosing it. We have three phases in the model with that specific algebra. In the first phase, it reduces to the original IIB matrix model. In the second phase, it reduces to a simple supersymmetric model. In the third phase, it reduces to a model that describes only the dynamics of the two matrices representing the torus.

Extension of IIB Matrix Model by Three-Algebra

We construct a Lie 3-algebra extended model of the IIB matrix model. It admits any Lie 3-algebra and possesses the same supersymmetry as the original matrix model, and thus as type IIB superstring theory. We examine dynamics of the model by taking minimal Lie 3-algebra that includes u(N) Lie algebra as an example. There are two phases in the minimally extended model at least classically. The extended action reduces to that of the IIB matrix model in one phase. In other phase, it reduces to a more simple action, which is rather easy to analyze.

Three-Algebra BFSS Matrix Theory

We extend the BFSS matrix theory by means of Lie 3-algebra. The extended model possesses the same supersymmetry as the original BFSS matrix theory, and thus as the infinite momentum frame limit of M-theory. We study dynamics of the model by choosing the minimal Lie 3-algebra that includes u(N) algebra. We can solve a constraint in the minimal model and obtain two phases. In one phase, the model reduces to the original matrix model. In another phase, it reduces to a simple supersymmetric model.

Zariski Quantization as Second Quantization

The Zariski quantization is one of the strong candidates for a quantization of the Nambu-Poisson bracket. In this paper, we apply the Zariski quantization for first quantized field theories, such as superstring and supermembrane theories, and clarify physical meaning of the Zariski quantization. The first quantized field theories need not to possess the Nambu-Poisson structure. First, we construct a natural metric for the spaces on which Zariski product acts in order to apply the Zariski quantization for field theories. This metric is invariant under a gauge transformation generated by the Zariski quantized Nambu-Poisson bracket. Second, we perform the Zariski quantization of superstring and supermembrane theories as examples. We find flat directions, which indicate that the Zariski quantized theories describe many-body systems. We also find that pair creations and annihilations occur among the many bodies introduced by the Zariski quantization, by studying a simple model. These facts imply that the Zariski quantization is a second quantization. Moreover, the Zariski quantization preserves supersymmetries of the first quantized field theories. Thus, we can obtain second quantized theories of superstring and supermembranes by performing the Zariski quantization of the superstring and supermembrane theories.

Supersymmetry and DLCQ Limit of Lie 3-algebra Model of M-theory

In arXiv:1003.4694, we proposed two models of M-theory, Hermitian 3-algebra model and Lie 3-algebra model. In this paper, we study the Lie 3-algebra model with a Lorentzian Lie 3-algebra. This model is ghost-free despite the Lorentzian 3-algebra. We show that our model satisfies two criteria as a model of M-theory. First, we show that the model possesses N=1 supersymmetry in eleven dimensions. Second, we show the model reduces to BFSS matrix theory with finite size matrices in a DLCQ limit.

Model of M-theory with Eleven Matrices

We show that an action of a supermembrane in an eleven-dimensional spacetime with a semi-light-cone gauge can be written only with Nambu-Poisson bracket and an invariant symmetric bilinear form under an approximation. Thus, the action under the conditions is manifestly covariant under volume preserving diffeomorphism even when the world-volume metric is flat. Next, we propose two 3-algebraic models of M-theory which are obtained as a second quantization of an action that is equivalent to the supermembrane action under the approximation. The second quantization is defined by replacing Nambu-Poisson bracket with finite-dimensional 3-algebras' brackets. Our models include eleven matrices corresponding to all the eleven space-time coordinates in M-theory although they possess not SO(1,10) but SO(1,2) x SO(8) or SO(1,2) x SU(4) x U(1) covariance. They possess N=1 space-time supersymmetry in eleven dimensions that consists of 16 kinematical and 16 dynamical ones. We also show that the SU(4) model with a certain algebra reduces to BFSS matrix theory if DLCQ limit is taken.

Covariant Formulation of M-Theory

We propose the bosonic part of an action that defines M-theory. It possesses manifest SO(1, 10) symmetry and constructed based on the Lorentzian 3-algebra associated with U(N) Lie algebra. From our action, we derive the bosonic sector of BFSS matrix theory and IIB matrix model in the naive large N limit by taking appropriate vacua. We also discuss an interaction with fermions.

Covariant Formulation of M-Theory II

We propose a supersymmetric model that defines M-theory. It possesses SO(1, 10) super Poincare symmetry and is constructed based on the Lorentzian 3-algebra associated with U(N) Lie algebra. This model is a supersymmetric generalization of the model in arXiv:0902.1333. From our model, we derive BFSS matrix theory and IIB matrix model in the naive large N limit by taking appropriate BPS vacua.

Perturbative Vacua from IIB Matrix Model

It has not been clarified whether a matrix model can describe various vacua of string theory. In this paper, we show that the IIB matrix model includes type IIA string theory. In the naive large N limit of the IIB matrix model, configurations consisting of simultaneously diagonalizable matrices form a moduli space, although the unique vacuum would be determined by complicated dynamics. This moduli space should correspond to a part of perturbatively stable vacua of string theory. Actually, one point on the moduli space represents type IIA string theory. Instead of integrating over the moduli space in the path-integral, we can consider each of the simultaneously diagonalizable configurations as a background and set the fluctuations of the diagonal elements to zero. Such procedure is known as quenching in the context of the large N reduced models. By quenching the diagonal elements of the matrices to an appropriate configuration, we show that the quenched IIB matrix model is equivalent to the two-dimensional large N N=8 super Yang-Mills theory on a cylinder. This theory is nothing but matrix string theory and is known to be equivalent to type IIA string theory. As a result, we find the manner to take the large N limit in the IIB matrix model.

On-shell Action for Bubbling Geometries

We study the half-BPS sector of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the full sector of the correspondence, on-shell actions in type IIB supergravity have been played crucial roles, for example in the GKP-Witten relation. We derive, therefore, an on-shell action that reproduces a class of half-BPS solutions found by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena. These solutions describe the bubbling geometries in the supergravity. We show that this on-shell action for the LLM solutions is dual to the classical limit of an observable of the N free fermions in a harmonic oscillator potential in 1+1 dimensions. The observable consists of three parts: an expectation value of the total energy, matrix elements of the momentum squared, and matrix elements of the position squared. Our results suggest that there exists a holographic correspondence on a two-dimensional surface in the bubbling geometries.

World-Sheets from N=4 Super Yang-Mills

We examine whether the free energy of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in four dimensions corresponds to the partition function of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring when corresponding operators are inserted into both theories. We obtain a formal free energy of N=4 U(N) SYM in four dimensions generated by the Feynman graph expansion to all orders of the 't Hooft coupling expansion with arbitrary N. This free energy is written as the sum over discretized closed two-dimensional surfaces that are identified with the world-sheets of the string. We compare this free energy with a formal partition function of the discretized AdS_5 x S^5 superstring with the kappa-symmetry fixed in the killing gauge and in the expansion corresponding to the weak 't Hooft coupling expansion in the SYM. We find common properties on both sides, although further studies are required to obtain a more precise comparison. Our result suggests a mechanism for how the world-sheet appears dynamically from N=4 SYM, thus enabling us to derive how the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring is reproduced in the AdS/CFT correspondence.

The algebra of flat currents for the string on AdS_5 x S^5 in the light-cone gauge

We continue the program initiated in hep-th/0411200 and calculate the algebra of the flat currents for the string on AdS_5 x S^5 background in the light-cone gauge with kappa-symmetry fixed. We find that the algebra has a closed form and that the non-ultralocal terms come with a weight factor e^ϕ that depends on the radial AdS_5 coordinate. Based on results in two-dimensional sigma models coupled to gravity via the dilaton field, this suggests that the algebra of transition matrices in the present case is likely to be unambigous.

The Algebra of Transition Matrices for the AdS_5 x S^5 Superstring

We consider integrability properties of the superstring on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ background and construct a new one parameter family of currents which satisfies the vanishing curvature condition. We present the Hamiltonian analysis for the sigma model action and determine the Poisson algebra of the transition matrices. We reveal the generalization of the $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ automorphism analogous to the sigma models defined on a symmetric space coset. A possible regularization scheme for the ambiguities present, which respects the generalized automorphism, is also discussed.

M5-brane Effective Action as an On-shell Action in Supergravity

We show that the covariant effective action for M5-brane is a solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equations of 11-dimensional supergravity. The solution to the H-J equations reproduces the supergravity solution that represents the M2-M5 bound states.

A Note on Hamilton-Jacobi Formalism and D-brane Effective Actions

We first review the canonical formalism with general space-like hypersurfaces developed by Dirac by rederiving the Hamilton-Jacobi equations which are satisfied by on-shell actions defined on such hypersurfaces. We compare the case of gravitational systems with that of the flat space. Next, we remark as a supplement to our previous results that the effective actions of D-brane and M-brane given by arbitrary embedding functions are on-shell actions of supergravities.

Hamilton-Jacobi Method and Effective Actions of D-brane and M-brane in Supergravity

We show that the effective actions of D-brane and M-brane are solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equations in supergravities. This fact means that these effective actions are on-shell actions in supergravities. These solutions to the H-J equations reproduce the supergravity solutions that represent D-branes in a $B_2$ field, M2 branes and the M2-M5 bound states. The effective actions in these solutions are those of a probe D-brane and a probe M-brane. Our findings can be applied to the study of the gauge/gravity correspondence, especially the holographic renormalization group, and a search for new solutions of supergravity.
