A quantum transducer using a parametric driven-dissipative phase transition

We study a dissipative Kerr-resonator subject to both single- and two-photon detuned drives. Beyond a critical detuning threshold, the Kerr resonator exhibits a semiclassical first-order dissipative phase transition between two different steady-states, that are characterized by a $π$ phase switch of the cavity field. This transition is shown to persist deep into the quantum limit of low photon numbers. Remarkably, the detuning frequency at which this transition occurs depends almost-linearly on the amplitude of the single-photon drive. Based on this phase switching feature, we devise a sensitive quantum transducer that translates the observed frequency of the parametric quantum phase transition to the detected single-photon amplitude signal. The effects of noise and temperature on the corresponding sensing protocol are addressed and a realistic circuit-QED implementation is discussed.

Quantum stabilization of photonic spatial correlations

The driven, dissipative Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) provides a generic description of collective phases of interacting photons in cavity arrays. In the limit of strong optical nonlinearities (hard-core limit), the BHM maps on the dissipative, transverse-field XY model (XYM). The steady-state of the XYM can be analyzed using mean-field theory, which reveals a plethora of interesting dynamical phenomena. For example, strong hopping combined with a blue-detuned drive, leads to an instability of the homogeneous steady-state with respect to antiferromagnetic fluctuations. In this paper, we address the question whether such an antiferromagnetic instability survives in the presence of quantum correlations beyond the mean-field approximation. For that purpose, we employ a self-consistent $1/z$ expansion for the density matrix, where $z$ is the lattice coordination number, i.e., the number of nearest neighbours for each site. We show that quantum fluctuations stabilize a new homogeneous steady-state with antiferromagnetic correlations in agreement with exact numerical simulations for finite lattices. The latter manifests itself as short-ranged oscillations of the first and second-order spatial coherence functions of the photons emitted by the array.

Emergent light crystal from frustration and pump engineering

We demonstrate how pump engineering drives the emergence of frustration-induced quasi-long-range order in a low-dimensional photonic cavity array. We consider a Lieb chain of nonlinear cavities as described by the Bose-Hubbard model and featuring a photonic flat band in the single-particle spectrum. Incoherent pumping of the Lieb lattice leads to a photonic density-wave which manifests an algebraic decay of correlations with twice the period of the lattice unit cell. This work opens up new directions for the emergence of strongly-correlated phases in quantum optical frustrated systems through pump design.

Spatial correlations in driven-dissipative photonic lattices

We study the nonequilibrium steady-state of interacting photons in cavity arrays as described by the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard and spin-$1/2$ XY model. For this purpose, we develop a self-consistent expansion in the inverse coordination number of the array ($\sim 1/z$) to solve the Lindblad master equation of these systems beyond the mean-field approximation. Our formalism is compared and benchmarked with exact numerical methods for small systems based on an exact diagonalization of the Liouvillian and a recently developed corner-space renormalization technique. We then apply this method to obtain insights beyond mean-field in two particular settings: (i) We show that the gas--liquid transition in the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model is characterized by large density fluctuations and bunched photon statistics. (ii) We study the antibunching--bunching transition of the nearest-neighbor correlator in the driven-dissipative spin-$1/2$ XY model and provide a simple explanation of this phenomenon.

Incompressible polaritons in a flat band

We study the interplay of geometric frustration and interactions in a non-equilibrium photonic lattice system exhibiting a polariton flat band as described by a variant of the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model. We show how to engineer strong photonic correlations in such a driven, dissipative system by quenching the kinetic energy through frustration. This produces an incompressible state of photons characterized by short-ranged crystalline order with period doubling. The latter manifests itself in strong spatial correlations, i.e., on-site and nearest-neighbor anti-bunching combined with extended density-wave oscillations at larger distances. We propose a state-of-the-art circuit QED realization of our system, which is tunable in situ.

Self-protected polariton states in photonic quantum metamaterials

We investigate the single-photon transport properties of a one-dimensional coupled cavity array (CCA) containing a single qubit in its central site by coupling the CCA to two transmission lines supporting propagating bosonic modes with linear dispersion. We find that even in the nominally weak light-matter coupling regime, the transmission through a long array exhibits two ultra-narrow resonances corresponding to long-lived self-protected polaritonic states localized around the site containing the qubit. The lifetime of these states is found to increase exponentially with the number of array sites in sharp distinction to the polaritonic Bloch modes of the cavity array.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of coupled qubit-cavity arrays

We study the coherence and fluorescence properties of the coherently pumped and dissipative Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model describing polaritons in a coupled-cavity array. At weak hopping we find strong signatures of photon blockade similar to single-cavity systems. At strong hopping the state of the photons in the array depends on its size. While the photon blockade persists in a dimer consisting of two coupled cavities, a coherent state forms on an extended lattice, which can be described in terms of a semi-classical model.
