Negative frequencies get real: a missing puzzle piece in nonlinear optics

Motivated by recent experimental results, we demonstrate that the ubiquitous pulse propagation equation based on a single generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equation is incomplete and inadequate to explain the formation of the so called negative resonant radiation emitted by optical solitons. The origin of this deficiency is due to the absence of a peculiar nonlinear coupling between the positive and negative frequency components of the ultrashort pulse spectrum during propagation, a feature that the slowly-varying envelope approximation is unable to capture. We therefore introduce a conceptually new model, based on the envelope of the analytic signal, that takes into account the full spectral dynamics of all frequency components, is prone to analytical treatment and retains the simulation efficiency of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We use our new equation to derive from first principles the phase-matching condition of the negative resonant radiation observed in previous experiments.

Negative-frequency dispersive wave generation in quadratic media

We show that the extremely blue-shifted dispersive wave emitted in Kerr media owing to the coupling with the negative-frequency branch [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 253901 (2012)] can be observed in quadratic media via second-harmonic generation. Not only such phenomenon is thus independent on the specific nonlinear mechanism, but it is shown to occur regardless of the fact that the process is pumped by a pulse which exhibits soliton-like features or, viceversa, undergoes wave-breaking. A simple unified formula gives the frequencies of the emitted dispersive waves in both cases.

Rogue waves emerging from the resonant interaction of three waves

We introduce a novel family of analytic solutions of the three-wave resonant interaction equations to the purpose of modeling unique events, i.e. "amplitude peaks" which are isolated in space and time. The description of these solutions is likely to be a crucial step in the understanding and forecasting of rogue-waves in a variety of multi-component wave dynamics, from oceanography to optics, from plasma physics to acoustics.

Thermo-modulational interband susceptibility and ultrafast temporal dynamics in nonlinear gold-based plasmonic devices

Starting from first principles, we theoretically model the nonlinear temporal dynamics of gold-based plasmonic devices resulting from the heating of their metallic components. At optical frequencies, the gold susceptibility is determined by the interband transitions around the X,L points in the first Brillouin zone and thermo-modulational effects ensue from Fermi smearing of the electronic energy distribution in the conduction band. As a consequence of light-induced heating of the conduction electrons, the optical susceptibility becomes nonlinear. In this paper we describe, for the first time to our knowledge, the effects of the thermo-modulational nonlinearity of gold on the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons guided on gold nanowires. We introduce a novel nonlinear Schroedinger-like equation to describe pulse propagation in such nanowires, and we predict the appearance an intense spectral red-shift caused by the delayed thermal response.

Deterministic Vector Freak Waves

We construct and discuss a semi-rational, multi-parametric vector solution of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (Manakov system). This family of solutions includes known vector Peregrine solutions, bright-dark-rogue solutions, and novel vector unusual freak waves. The vector freak (or rogue) waves could be of great interest in a variety of complex systems, from optics to Bose-Einstein condensates and finance.

Delayed optical nonlinearity of thin metal films

Metals typically have very large nonlinear susceptibilities, whose origin is mainly of thermal character. We model the cubic nonlinearity of thin metal films by means of a delayed response derived \textit{ab initio} from an improved version of the classic two temperature model. We validate our model by comparison with ultrafast pump-probe experiments on gold films.

Velocity-locked solitary waves in quadratic media

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of three-wave resonant interaction solitary triplets in quadratic media. Stable velocity-locked bright-dark-bright spatial solitary triplets, determined by the balance between the energy exchange rates and the velocity mismatch between the interacting waves, are excited in a KTP crystal.

Nonlinear envelope equation for broadband optical pulses in quadratic media

We derive a nonlinear envelope equation to describe the propagation of broadband optical pulses in second order nonlinear materials. The equation is first order in the propagation coordinate and is valid for arbitrarily wide pulse bandwidth. Our approach goes beyond the usual coupled wave description of $χ^{(2)}$ phenomena and provides an accurate modelling of the evolution of ultra-broadband pulses also when the separation into different coupled frequency components is not possible or not profitable.

Subwavelength Diffraction Management

We study light propagation in nanoscale periodic structures composed of dielectric and metal in the visible range. We demonstrate that diffraction can be tailored both in magnitude and in sign by varying the geometric features of the waveguides. Diffraction management on a subwavelength scale is demonstrated by numerical solution of Maxwell equations in frequency domain.

Parametric Frequency Conversion of Short Optical Pulses Controlled by a CW Background

We predict that parametric sum-frequency generation of an ultra-short pulse may result from the mixing of an ultra-short optical pulse with a quasi-continuous wave control. We analytically show that the intensity, time duration and group velocity of the generated idler pulse may be controlled in a stable manner by adjusting the intensity level of the background pump.

Inelastic Scattering and Interactions of Three-Wave Parametric Solitons

We study the excitation, decay and interactions of novel, velocity locked three-wave parametric solitons in a medium with quadratic nonlinearity and dispersion. We analytically describe the particle-like scattering between stable or unstable soliton triplets with linear waves in terms of explicit solutions featuring accelerated or decelerated solitons.

Stable Control of Pulse Speed in Parametric Three-Wave Solitons

We analyze the control of the propagation speed of three wave packets interacting in a medium with quadratic nonlinearity and dispersion. We found analytical expressions for mutually trapped pulses with a common velocity in the form of a three-parameter family of solutions of the three-wave resonant interaction. The stability of these novel parametric solitons is simply related to the value of their common group velocity.
