Characterizing non-deterministic noiseless linear amplifiers at the quantum limit

We address the characterization of the gain parameter of a non-deterministic noiseless linear amplifier (NLA) and compare the performances of different estimation strategies using tools from quantum estimation theory. At first, we show that, contrary to naive expectations, post-selecting only the amplified states does not offer the most accurate estimate. We then focus on minimal implementations of a NLA, i.e. those obtained by coupling the input state to a two-level system, and show that the maximal amount of information about the gain of the NLA is obtained by measuring the whole composite system. The quantum Fisher information (QFI) of this best-case scenario is analysed in some details, and compared to the QFI of the post-selected states, both for successful and unsuccessful amplification. Eventually, we show that full extraction of the available information is achieved when the non-deterministic process is implemented by a Lüders instrument. We also analyse the precision attainable by probing NLAs by single-mode pure states and measuring the field or the number of quanta, and discuss in some details the specific cases of squeezed vacuum and coherent states.

Optimal quantum estimation in spin systems at criticality

It is a general fact that the coupling constant of an interacting many-body Hamiltonian do not correspond to any observable and one has to infer its value by an indirect measurement. For this purpose, quantum systems at criticality can be considered as a resource to improve the ultimate quantum limits to precision of the estimation procedure. In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional quantum Ising model as a paradigmatic example of many-body system exhibiting criticality, and derive the optimal quantum estimator of the coupling constant varying size and temperature. We find the optimal external field, which maximizes the quantum Fisher information of the coupling constant, both for few spins and in the thermodynamic limit, and show that at the critical point a precision improvement of order $L$ is achieved. We also show that the measurement of the total magnetization provides optimal estimation for couplings larger than a threshold value, which itself decreases with temperature.

Improving quantum interferometry by using entanglement (to take a decision you'd better use entanglement)

We address the use of entanglement to improve the precision of generalized quantum interferometry, i.e. of binary measurements aimed to determine whether or not a perturbation has been applied by a given device. For the most relevant operations in quantum optics, we evaluate the optimal detection strategy and the ultimate bounds to the minimum detectable perturbation. Our results indicate that entanglement-assisted strategies improve the discrimination in comparison with conventional schemes. A concrete setup to approach performances of the optimal strategies is also suggested.
