Stationary entanglement in N-atom subradiant degenerate cascade systems

We address ultracold $N$-atom degenerate cascade systems and show that stationary subradiant states, already observed in the semiclassical regime, also exist in a fully quantum regime and for a small number of atoms. We explicitly evaluate the amount of stationary entanglement for the two-atom configuration and show full inseparability for the three-atom case. We also show that a continuous variable description of the systems is not suitable to detect entanglement due to the nonGaussianity of subradiant states.

Demonstration of a programmable source of two-photon multiqubit entangled states

We suggest and demonstrate a novel source of two-photon multipartite entangled states which exploits the transverse spatial structure of spontaneous parametric downconversion together with a programmable spatial light modulator (SLM). The 1D SLM is used to perform polarization entanglement purification and to realize arbitrary phase-gates between polarization and momentum degrees of freedom of photons. We experimentally demonstrate our scheme by generating two-photon three qubit linear cluster states with high fidelity using a diode laser pump with a limited coherence time and power on the crystal as low as 2.5$mW.

Gaussian quantum discord

We extend the quantum discord to continuous variable systems and evaluate Gaussian quantum discord C(ρ) for bipartite Gaussian states. In particular, for squeezed thermal states (STS), we explicitly maximize the extractable information over Gaussian measurements: C(ρ) is minimized by a generalized measurement rather than a projective one. Almost all STS have nonzero Gaussian discord: they may be either separable or entangled if the discord is below the threshold C(ρ)=1, whereas they are all entangled above the threshold. We elucidate the general role of state parameters in determining the discord and discuss its evolution in noisy channels.

Non-Gaussian states produced by close-to-threshold optical parametric oscillators: role of classical and quantum fluctuations

Quantum states with non-Gaussian statistics generated by optical parametric oscillators (OPO) with fluctuating parameters are studied by means of the Kurtosis excess of the external field quadratures. The field generated is viewed as the response of a nonlinear device to the fluctuations of laser pump amplitude and frequency, crystal temperature and cavity detuning, in addition to quantum noise sources. The Kurtosis excess has been evaluated perturbatively up to the third order in the strength of the crystal nonlinear coupling factor and the second order in the classical fluctuating parameters. Applied to the device described in Opt. Expr. 13, 948-956 (2005) the model has given values of the Kurtosi excess in good agreement with the measured ones.

Quantum communication with photon-number entangled states and realistic photodetection

We address the effects of realistic photodetection, with nonunit quantum efficiency and background noise (dark counts), on the performances of quantum communication schemes based on photon-number entangled states. We consider channels based on Gaussian twin-beam states and non-Gaussian two-mode coherent states and evaluate the channel capacity by optimizing the bit discrimination threshold. We found that TWB-based channels are more robust against noise than TMC-based ones and that this result is almost independent on the statistics of dark counts.

State mapping and discontinuous entanglement transfer in a multipartite open system

We describe the transfer of quantum information and correlations from an entangled tripartite bosonic system to three separate qubits through their local environments also in the presence of various dissipative effects. Optimal state mapping and entanglement transfer are shown in the framework of optical cavity quantum electrodynamics involving qubit-like radiation states and two-level atoms via the mediation of cavity modes. For an input GHZ state mixed with white noise we show the occurrence of sudden death and birth of entanglement that is discontinuously exchanged among the tripartite subsystems.

Non-Gaussian states by conditional measurements

We address realistic schemes for the generation of non-Gaussian states of light based on conditional intensity measurements performed on correlated bipartite states. We consider both quantum and classically correlated states and different kind of detection, comparing the resulting non Gaussianity parameters upon varying the input energy and the detection efficiency. We find that quantum correlations generally lead to higher non Gaussianity, at least in the low energy regime. An experimental implementation feasible with current technology is also suggested.

Enhancement of parameter estimation by Kerr interaction

We address quantum estimation of displacement and squeezing parameters by the class of probes made of Gaussian states undergoing Kerr interaction. If we fix the overall energy available to the probe, without posing any constraint on the available Gaussian squeezing, then Gaussian squeezing represents the optimal resource for parameter estimation. On the other hand, in the more realistic case where the amount of Gaussian squeezing is fixed, or even absent, then Kerr interaction turns out to be useful to improve estimation, especially for probe states with large amplitude. Our results indicate that precision achievable with current technology Gaussian squeezing may be attained and surpassed for realistic values of the Kerr coupling.

Quantum estimation for quantum technology

Several quantities of interest in quantum information, including entanglement and purity, are nonlinear functions of the density matrix and cannot, even in principle, correspond to proper quantum observables. Any method aimed to determine the value of these quantities should resort to indirect measurements and thus corresponds to a parameter estimation problem whose solution, i.e the determination of the most precise estimator, unavoidably involves an optimization procedure. We review local quantum estimation theory and present explicit formulas for the symmetric logarithmic derivative and the quantum Fisher information of relevant families of quantum states. Estimability of a parameter is defined in terms of the quantum signal-to-noise ratio and the number of measurements needed to achieve a given relative error. The connections between the optmization procedure and the geometry of quantum statistical models are discussed. Our analysis allows to quantify quantum noise in the measurements of non observable quantities and provides a tools for the characterization of signals and devices in quantum technology.

Experimental estimation of entanglement at the quantum limit

Entanglement is the central resource of quantum information processing and the precise characterization of entangled states is a crucial issue for the development of quantum technologies. This leads to the necessity of a precise, experimental feasible measure of entanglement. Nevertheless, such measurements are limited both from experimental uncertainties and intrinsic quantum bounds. Here we present an experiment where the amount of entanglement of a family of two-qubit mixed photon states is estimated with the ultimate precision allowed by quantum mechanics.

Entanglement induced transparency and applications

We point out a symmetry exhibited by pairs of entangled states and discuss its possible applications in quantum information. More specifically, we consider quadripartite systems prepared in bipartite product states of the form $|Ψ> = |ψ>_{12} \otimes |ψ>_{34}$ and let the uncorrelated subsystems 14 and 23 interact by a given unitary $U_{14}\otimes U_{23}$: we show that the entanglement between the noninteracting subsystems 12 and 34 may induce transparency, i.e. makes $|Ψ>$ an eigenstate of the unitary. We investigate the occurrence of this phenomenon both in continuous variable and qubit systems, and discuss its possible applications to bath engineering, double swapping and remote inversion.

Bayesian estimation in homodyne interferometry

We address phase-shift estimation by means of squeezed vacuum probe and homodyne detection. We analyze Bayesian estimator, which is known to asymptotically saturate the classical Cramer-Rao bound to the variance, and discuss convergence looking at the a posteriori distribution as the number of measurements increases. We also suggest two feasible adaptive methods, acting on the squeezing parameter and/or the homodyne local oscillator phase, which allow to optimize homodyne detection and approach the ultimate bound to precision imposed by the quantum Cramer-Rao theorem. The performances of our two-step methods are investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulated experiments with a small number of homodyne data, thus giving a quantitative meaning to the notion of asymptotic optimality.

Quantifying the non-Gaussian character of a quantum state by quantum relative entropy

We introduce a novel measure to quantify the non-Gaussian character of a quantum state: the quantum relative entropy between the state under examination and a reference Gaussian state. We analyze in details the properties of our measure and illustrate its relationships with relevant quantities in quantum information as the Holevo bound and the conditional entropy; in particular a necessary condition for the Gaussian character of a quantum channel is also derived. The evolution of non-Gaussianity (nonG) is analyzedfor quantum states undergoing conditional Gaussification towards twin-beam and de-Gaussification driven by Kerr interaction. Our analysis allows to assess nonG as a resource for quantum information and, in turn, to evaluate the performances of Gaussification and de-Gaussification protocols.

Non-Gaussianity and purity in finite dimension

We address truncated states of continuous variable systems and analyze their statistical properties numerically by generating random states in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. In particular, we focus to the distribution of purity and non-Gaussianity for dimension up to d=21. We found that both quantities are distributed around typical values with variances that decrease for increasing dimension. Approximate formulas for typical purity and non-Gaussianity as a function of the dimension are derived.

Tripartite entanglement transfer from flying modes to localized qubits

We investigate the process of entanglement transfer from a three-mode quantized field to a system of three spatially separated qubits each one made of a two-level atom resonantly coupled to a cavity mode. The optimal conditions for entanglement transfer, evaluated by atomic tripartite negativity, are derived for radiation prepared in qubit-like and Gaussian entangled states in terms of field parameters, atom-cavity interaction time, cavity mirror losses, and atomic preparation. For qubit-like states we found that for negligible cavity losses some states may completely transfer their entanglement to the atoms and/or be exactly mapped to the atomic state, whereas for Gaussian states we found a range of field parameters to obtain a large entanglement transfer. The purity of the three-qubit states and the entanglement of two-qubit subsystems are also discussed in some details.

Demonstration of a bright and compact source of tripartite nonclassical light

We experimentally demonstrate the nonclassical photon number correlations expected in tripartite continuous variable states obtained by parametric processes. Our scheme involves a single nonlinear crystal, where two interlinked parametric interactions take place simultaneously, and represents a bright and compact source of a sub-shot-noise tripartite light field. We analyze the effects of the pump intensities on the numbers of detected photons and on the amount of noise reduction in some details, thus demonstrating a good agreement between the experimental data and a single-mode theoretical description.

Optimal estimation of entanglement

Entanglement does not correspond to any observable and its evaluation always corresponds to an estimation procedure where the amount of entanglement is inferred from the measurements of one or more proper observables. Here we address optimal estimation of entanglement in the framework of local quantum estimation theory and derive the optimal observable in terms of the symmetric logarithmic derivative. We evaluate the quantum Fisher information and, in turn, the ultimate bound to precision for several families of bipartite states, either for qubits or continuous variable systems, and for different measures of entanglement. We found that for discrete variables, entanglement may be efficiently estimated when it is large, whereas the estimation of weakly entangled states is an inherently inefficient procedure. For continuous variable Gaussian systems the effectiveness of entanglement estimation strongly depends on the chosen entanglement measure. Our analysis makes an important point of principle and may be relevant in the design of quantum information protocols based on the entanglement content of quantum states.

Properties of entangled photon pairs generated by a CW laser with small coherence time: theory and experiment

The generation of entangled photon pairs by parametric down--conversion from solid state CW lasers with small coherence time is theoretically and experimentally analyzed. We consider a compact and low-cost setup based on a two-crystal scheme with Type-I phase matching. We study the effect of the pump coherence time over the entangled state visibility and over the violation of Bell's inequality, as a function of the crystals length. The full density matrix is reconstructed by quantum tomography. The proposed theoretical model is verified using a purification protocol based on a compensation crystal.
