On equilibrium shapes of charged flat drops

Equilibrium shapes of two-dimensional charged, perfectly conducting liquid drops are governed by a geometric variational problem that involves a perimeter term modeling line tension and a capacitary term modeling Coulombic repulsion. Here we give a complete explicit solution to this variational problem. Namely, we show that at fixed total charge a ball of a particular radius is the unique global minimizer among all sufficiently regular sets in the plane. For sets whose area is also fixed, we show that balls are the only minimizers if the charge is less than or equal to a critical charge, while for larger charge minimizers do not exist. Analogous results hold for drops whose potential, rather than charge, is fixed.

Crystalline Evolutions in Chessboard-like Microstructures

We describe the macroscopic behavior of evolutions by crystalline curvature of planar sets in a chessboard--like medium, modeled by a periodic forcing term. We show that the underlying microstructure may produce both pinning and confinement effects on the geometric motion.

Isoperimetric problems for a nonlocal perimeter of Minkowski type

We prove a quantitative version of the isoperimetric inequality for a non local perimeter of Minkowski type. We also apply this result to study isoperimetric problems with repulsive interaction terms, under convexity constraints. We show existence of minimizers, and we describe the shape of minimizers in certain parameter regimes.

On minimizers of an isoperimetric problem with long-range interactions under a convexity constraint

We study a variational problem modeling the behavior at equilibrium of charged liquid drops under convexity constraint. After proving well-posedness of the model, we show C 1,1-regularity of minimizers for the Coulombic interaction in dimension two. As a by-product we obtain that balls are the unique minimizers for small charge. Eventually, we study the asymptotic behavior of minimizers, as the charge goes to infinity.

The isoperimetric problem for nonlocal perimeters

We consider a class of nonlocal generalized perimeters which includes fractional perimeters and Riesz type potentials. We prove a general isoperimetric inequality for such functionals, and we discuss some applications. In particular we prove existence of an isoperimetric profile, under suitable assumptions on the interaction kernel.

Crystalline evolutions with rapidly oscillating forcing terms

We consider the evolution by crystalline curvature of a planar set in a stratified medium, modeled by a periodic forcing term. We characterize the limit evolution law as the period of the oscillations tends to zero. Even if the model is very simple, the limit evolution problem is quite rich, and we discuss some properties such as uniqueness, comparison principle and pinning/depinning phenomena.

On stationary fractional Mean Field Games

We provide an existence result for stationary fractional mean field game systems, with fractional exponent greater than 1/2. In the case in which the coupling is a nonlocal regularizing potential, we obtain existence of solutions under general assumptions on the Hamiltonian. In the case of local coupling, we restrict to the subcritical regime, that is the case in which the diffusion part of the operator dominates the Hamiltonian term. We consider both the case of local bounded coupling and of local unbounded coupling with power-type growth. In this second regime, we impose some conditions on the growth of the coupling and on the growth of the Hamiltonian with respect to the gradient term.

Existence and uniqueness for anisotropic and crystalline mean curvature flows

An existence and uniqueness result, up to fattening, for crystalline mean curvature flows with forcing and arbitrary (convex) mobilities, is proven. This is achieved by introducing a new notion of solution to the corresponding level set formulation. Such a solution satisfies the comparison principle and a stability property with respect to the approximation by suitably regularized problems. The results are valid in any dimension and for arbitrary, possibly unbounded, initial closed sets. The approach accounts for the possible presence of a time-dependent bounded forcing term, with spatial Lipschitz continuity. As a by-product of the analysis, the problem of the convergence of the Almgren-Taylor-Wang minimizing movements scheme to a unique (up to fattening) "flat flow" in the case of general, possibly crystalline, anisotropies is settled.

On the existence of connecting orbits for critical values of the energy

We consider an open connected set $Ω$ and a smooth potential $U$ which is positive in $Ω$ and vanishes on $\partialΩ$. We study the existence of orbits of the mechanical system \[ \ddot{u}=U_x(u), \] that connect different components of $\partialΩ$ and lie on the zero level of the energy. We allow that $\partialΩ$ contains a finite number of critical points of $U$. The case of symmetric potential is also considered.

Homogenization of a semilinear heat equation

We consider the homogenization of a semilinear heat equation with vanishing viscosity and with oscillating positive potential depending on $u/\varepsilon$. According to the rate between the frequency of oscillations in the potential and the vanishing factor in the viscosity, we obtain different regimes in the limit evolution and we discuss the locally uniform convergence of the solutions to the effective problem. The interesting feature of the model is that in the strong diffusion regime the effective operator is discontinuous in the gradient entry. We get a complete characterization of the limit solution in dimension $n=1$, whereas in dimension $n>1$ we discuss the main properties of the solutions to the effective problem selected at the limit and we prove uniqueness for some classes of initial data.

TV denoising of two balls in the plane

The aim of this paper is to compute the explicit solution of the total variation denoising problem corresponding to the characteristic function of a set which is the union of two planar disjoint balls with different radii.

Rigidity of critical points for a nonlocal Ohta-Kawasaki energy

We investigate the shape of critical points for a free energy consisting of a nonlocal perimeter plus a nonlocal repulsive term. In particular, we prove that a volume-constrained critical point is necessarily a ball if its volume is sufficiently small with respect to its isodiametric ratio, thus extending a result previously known only for global minimizers. We also show that, at least in one-dimension, there exist critical points with arbitrarily small volume and large isodiametric ratio. This example shows that a constraint on the diameter is, in general, necessary to establish the radial symmetry of the critical points.

Some results on anisotropic fractional mean curvature flows

We show the consistency of a threshold dynamics type algorithm for the anisotropic motion by fractional mean curvature, in the presence of a time dependent forcing term. Beside the consistency result, we show that convex sets remain convex during the evolution, and the evolution of a bounded convex set is uniquely defined.

Volume constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with a potential energy

We consider volume-constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with the addition of a potential energy in the form of a volume inte- gral. Such minimizers are solutions of the prescribed fractional curvature problem. We prove existence and regularity of minimizers under suitable assumptions on the potential energy, which cover the periodic case. In the small volume regime we show that minimizers are close to balls, with a quantitative estimate.
