Doubling construction for $O(m)\times O(n)$-invariant solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation

We construct new families of two-ended $O(m)\times O(n)$-invariant solutions to the Allen- Cahn equation Δu+u-u3=0 in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, with $N\ge 7$, whose zero level sets diverge logarithmically from the Lawson cone at infinity. The construction is based on a careful study of the Jacobi-Toda system on a given $O(m)\times O(n)$-invariant manifold, which is asymptotic to the Lawson cone at infinity.

Normalized solutions of mass supercritical Schrödinger equations with potential

This paper is concerned with the existence of normalized solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu+V(x)u+λu = |u|^{p-2}u \qquad\text{in $\mathbb{R}^N$} \] in the mass supercritical and Sobolev subcritical case $2+\frac{4}{N}<p<2^*$. We prove the existence of a solution $(u,λ)\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ with prescribed $L^2$-norm $\|u\|_2=ρ$ under various conditions on the potential $V:\mathbb{R}^N\to\mathbb{R}$, positive and vanishing at infinity, including potentials with singularities. The proof is based on a new min-max argument.

Detecting topology through dynamics in interacting fermionic wires

We describe a protocol to read out the topological invariant of interacting 1D chiral models, based on measuring the mean chiral displacement of time-evolving bulk excitations. We present analytical calculations and numerical Matrix Product State simulations of interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains, demonstrating how the mean chiral displacement allows to distinguish between topological insulator, trivial insulator and symmetry-broken phases. Finally, we provide an experimental blueprint for realizing a model displaying these three phases and describe how to detect those.

Charge and statistics of lattice quasiholes from density measurements: a Tree Tensor Network study

We numerically investigate the properties of the quasihole excitations above the bosonic fractional Chern insulator state at filling $ν= 1/2$, in the specific case of the Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian with hard-core interactions. For this purpose we employ a Tree Tensor Network technique, which allows us to study systems with up to $N=18$ particles on a $16 \times 16$ lattice and experiencing an additional harmonic confinement. First, we observe the quantization of the quasihole charge at fractional values and its robustness against the shape and strength of the impurity potentials used to create and localize such excitations. Then, we numerically characterize quasihole anyonic statistics by applying a discretized version of the relation connecting the statistics of quasiholes in the lowest Landau level to the depletions they create in the density profile [Macaluso et al., arXiv:1903.03011]. Our results give a direct proof of the anyonic statistics for quasiholes of fractional Chern insulators, starting from a realistic Hamiltonian. Moreover, they provide strong indications that this property can be experimentally probed through local density measurements, making our scheme readily applicable in state-of-the-art experiments with ultracold atoms and superconducting qubits.

Drude weight increase by orbital and repulsive interactions in fermionic ladders

In strictly one-dimensional systems, repulsive interactions tend to reduce particle mobility on a lattice. Therefore, the Drude weight, controlling the divergence at zero-frequency of optical conductivities in perfect conductors, is lower than in non-interacting cases. We show that this is not the case when extending to quasi one-dimensional ladder systems. Relying on bosonization, perturbative and matrix product states (MPS) calculations, we show that nearest-neighbor interactions and magnetic fluxes provide a bias between back- and forward-scattering processes, leading to linear corrections to the Drude weight in the interaction strength. As a consequence, Drude weights counter-intuitively increase (decrease) with repulsive (attractive) interactions. Our findings are relevant for the efficient tuning of Drude weights in the framework of ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices and equally affect topological edge states in condensed matter systems.

A programming guide for tensor networks with global $SU(2)$ symmetry

This paper is a manual with tips and tricks for programming tensor network algorithms with global $SU(2)$ symmetry. We focus on practical details that are many times overlooked when it comes to implementing the basic building blocks of codes, such as useful data structures to store the tensors, practical ways of manipulating them, and so forth. Here we do not restrict ourselves to any specific tensor network method, but keep always in mind that the implementation should scale well for simulations of higher-dimensional systems using, e.g., Projected Entangled Pair States, where tensors with many indices may show up. To this end, the structural tensors (or intertwiners) that arise in the usual decomposition of $SU(2)$-symmetric tensors are never explicitly stored throughout the simulation. Instead, we store and manipulate the corresponding fusion trees - an algebraic specification of the symmetry constraints on the tensor - in order to implement basic $SU(2)$-symmetric tensor operations.

Quantum criticality on a chiral ladder: an $SU(2)$ iDMRG study

In this paper we study the ground state properties of a ladder Hamiltonian with chiral $SU(2)$-invariant spin interactions, a possible first step towards the construction of truly two dimensional non-trivial systems with chiral properties starting from quasi-one dimensional ones. Our analysis uses a recent implementation by us of $SU(2)$ symmetry in tensor network algorithms, specifically for infinite Density Matrix Renormalization Group (iDMRG). After a preliminary analysis with Kadanoff coarse-graining and exact diagonalization for a small-size system, we discuss its bosonization and recap the continuum limit of the model to show that it corresponds to a conformal field theory, in agreement with our numerical findings. In particular, the scaling of the entanglement entropy as well as finite-entanglement scaling data show that the ground state properties match those of the universality class of a $c = 1$ conformal field theory (CFT) in $(1+1)$ dimensions. We also study the algebraic decay of spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions, as well as the algebraic convergence of the ground state energy with the bond dimension, and the entanglement spectrum of half an infinite chain. Our results for the entanglement spectrum are remarkably similar to those of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain, which we take as a strong indication that both systems are described by the same CFT at low energies, i.e., an $SU(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory. Moreover, we explain in detail how to construct Matrix Product Operators for $SU(2)$-invariant three-spin interactions, something that had not been addressed with sufficient depth in the literature.

Radial and cylindrical symmetry of solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard equation

The paper is devoted to the classification of entire solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard equation $-Δu = u-u^3-δ$ in $\R^N$, with particular interest in those solutions whose nodal set is either bounded or contained in a cylinder. The aim is to prove either radial or cylindrical symmetry, under suitable hypothesis.

The Rhombi-Chain Bose-Hubbard Model: geometric frustration and interactions

We explore the effects of geometric frustration within a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model using a chain of rhombi subject to a magnetic flux. The competition of tunnelling, self-interaction and magnetic flux gives rise to the emergence of a pair-superfluid (pair-Luttinger liquid) phase besides the more conventional Mott-insulator and superfluid (Luttinger liquid) phases. We compute the complete phase diagram of the model by identifying characteristic properties of the pair-Luttinger liquid phase such as pair correlation functions and structure factors and find that the pair-Luttinger liquid phase is very sensitive to changes away from perfect frustration (half-flux). We provide some proposals to make the model more resilient to variants away from perfect frustration. We also study the bipartite entanglement properties of the chain. We discover that, while the scaling of the block entropy pair-superfluid and of the single-particle superfluid leads to the same central charge, the properties of the low-lying entanglement spectrum levels reveal their fundamental difference.

The Tensor Networks Anthology: Simulation techniques for many-body quantum lattice systems

We present a compendium of numerical simulation techniques, based on tensor network methods, aiming to address problems of many-body quantum mechanics on a classical computer. The core setting of this anthology are lattice problems in low spatial dimension at finite size, a physical scenario where tensor network methods, both Density Matrix Renormalization Group and beyond, have long proven to be winning strategies. Here we explore in detail the numerical frameworks and methods employed to deal with low-dimension physical setups, from a computational physics perspective. We focus on symmetries and closed-system simulations in arbitrary boundary conditions, while discussing the numerical data structures and linear algebra manipulation routines involved, which form the core libraries of any tensor network code. At a higher level, we put the spotlight on loop-free network geometries, discussing their advantages, and presenting in detail algorithms to simulate low-energy equilibrium states. Accompanied by discussions of data structures, numerical techniques and performance, this anthology serves as a programmer's companion, as well as a self-contained introduction and review of the basic and selected advanced concepts in tensor networks, including examples of their applications.

Tan's contact scaling behaviour for trapped Lieb-Liniger bosons: from two to many

We show that the contact parameter of N harmonically-trapped interacting 1D bosons at zero temperature can be analytically and accurately obtained by a simple rescaling of the exact two-boson solution, and that N-body effects can be almost factorized. The small deviations observed between our analytical results and DMRG calculations are more pronounced when the interaction energy is maximal (i.e. at intermediate interaction strengths) but they remain bounded by the large-N local-density approximation obtained from the Lieb-Liniger equation of state stemming from the Bethe Ansatz. The rescaled two-body solution is so close to the exact ones, that is possible, within a simple expression interpolating the rescaled two-boson result to the local-density, to obtain N-boson contact and ground state energy functions in very good agreement with DMRG calculations. Our results suggest a change of paradigm in the study of interacting quantum systems, giving to the contact parameter a more fundamental role than energy.

Multiple Delaunay ends solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation

Let $Σ$ be a surface of constant mean curvature in ${\mathbb R}^3$ with multiple Delaunay ends. Assuming that $Σ$ is non degenerate in this paper we construct new solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard equation $\varepsilonΔu+\varepsilon^{-1}u(1-u^2)=\ell_\varepsilon$ in ${\mathbb R}^3$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ the zero level set of $u_\varepsilon$ approaches $Σ$. Moreover, on compacts of the connected components of ${\mathbb R}^3\setminus Σ$ we have $1-|u_\varepsilon|\to 0$ uniformly.

Tuning the Drude weight of Dirac-Weyl fermions in one-dimensional ring traps

We study the response to an applied flux of an interacting system of Dirac-Weyl fermions confined in a one-dimensional (1D) ring. Combining analytical calculations with density-matrix renormalization group results, we show that tuning of interactions leads to a unique many-body system that displays either a suppression or an enhancement of the Drude weight - the zero-frequency peak in the ac conductivity - with respect to the non-interacting value. An asymmetry in the interaction strength between same- and different-pseudospin Dirac-Weyl fermions leads to Drude weight enhancement. Viceversa, symmetric interactions lead to Drude weight suppression. Our predictions can be tested in mixtures of ultracold fermions in 1D ring traps.

Fractional quantum Hall effect in the interacting Hofstadter model via tensor networks

We show via tensor network methods that the Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian for hard-core bosons on a square geometry supports a topological phase realizing the $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect on the lattice. We address the robustness of the ground state degeneracy and of the energy gap, measure the many-body Chern number, and characterize the system using Green functions, showing that they decay algebraically at the edges of open geometries, indicating the presence of gapless edge modes. Moreover, we estimate the topological entanglement entropy by taking a combination of lattice bipartitions that reproduces the topological structure of the original proposals by Kitaev and Preskill, and Levin and Wen. The numerical results show that the topological contribution is compatible with the expected value $γ= 1/2$. Our results provide extensive evidence that FQH states are within reach of state-of-the-art cold atom experiments.

Strong coupling phases of the spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Hubbard chain: odd integer Mott lobes and helical magnetic phases

We study the odd integer filled Mott phases of a spin-1 Bose-Hubbard chain and determine their fate in the presence of a Raman induced spin-orbit coupling which has been achieved in ultracold atomic gases; this system is described by a quantum spin-1 chain with a spiral magnetic field. The spiral magnetic field initially induces helical order with either ferromagnetic or dimer order parameters, giving rise to a spiral paramagnet at large field. The spiral ferromagnet-to-paramagnet phase transition is in a novel universality class, with critical exponents associated with the divergence of the correlation length $ν\approx 2/3$ and the order parameter susceptibility $γ\approx 1/2$. We solve the effective spin model exactly using the density matrix renormalization group, and compare with both a large-$S$ classical solution and a phenomenological Landau theory. We discuss how these exotic bosonic magnetic phases can be produced and probed in ultracold atomic experiments in optical lattices.

Strongly correlated one-dimensional Bose-Fermi quantum mixtures: symmetry and correlations

We consider multi-component quantum mixtures (bosonic, fermionic, or mixed) with strongly repulsive contact interactions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. In the limit of infinitely strong repulsion and zero temperature, using the class-sum method, we study the symmetries of the spatial wave function of the mixture. We find that the ground state of the system has the most symmetric spatial wave function allowed by the type of mixture. This provides an example of the generalized Lieb-Mattis theorem. Furthermore, we show that the symmetry properties of the mixture are embedded in the large-momentum tails of the momentum distribution, which we evaluate both at infinite repulsion by an exact solution and at finite interactions using a numerical DMRG approach. This implies that an experimental measurement of the Tan's contact would allow to unambiguously determine the symmetry of any kind of multi-component mixture.

Periodic solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard equation in the plane

In this paper we construct entire solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard equation $-Δ(-Δu+W^{'}(u))+W^{"}(u)(-Δu+W^{'}(u))=0$ in the Euclidean plane, where $W(u)$ is the standard double-well potential $\frac{1}{4} (1-u^2)^2$. Such solutions have a non-trivial profile that shadows a Willmore planar curve, and converge uniformly to $\pm 1$ as $x_2 \to \pm \infty$. These solutions give a counterexample to the counterpart of Gibbons' conjecture for the fourth-order counterpart of the Allen-Cahn equation. We also study the $x_2$-derivative of these solutions using the special structure of Willmore's equation.

Positive and nodal single-layered solutions to supercritical elliptic problems above the higher critical exponents

We study the problem% \[ -Δv+λv=| v| ^{p-2}v\text{ in }Ω,\text{\qquad}v=0\text{ on $\partialΩ$},\text{ }% \] for $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ and supercritical exponents $p,$ in domains of the form% \[ Ω:=\{(y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^{N-m-1}\times\mathbb{R}^{m+1}:(y,| z| )\inΘ\}, \] where $m\geq1,$ $N-m\geq3,$ and $Θ$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}% ^{N-m}$ whose closure is contained in $\mathbb{R}^{N-m-1}\times(0,\infty)$. Under some symmetry assumptions on $Θ$, we show that this problem has infinitely many solutions for every $λ$ in an interval which contains $[0,\infty)$ and $p>2$ up to some number which is larger than the $(m+1)^{st}$ critical exponent $2_{N,m}^{\ast}:=\frac{2(N-m)}{N-m-2}$. We also exhibit domains with a shrinking hole, in which there are a positive and a nodal solution which concentrate on a sphere, developing a single layer that blows up at an $m$-dimensional sphere contained in the boundary of $Ω,$ as the hole shrinks and $p\rightarrow2_{N,m}^{\ast}$ from above. The limit profile of the positive solution, in the transversal direction to the sphere of concentration, is a rescaling of the standard bubble, whereas that of the nodal solution is a rescaling of a nonradial sign-changing solution to the problem% \[ -Δu=| u| ^{2_{n}^{\ast}-2}u,\text{\qquad}u\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^{n}), \] where $2_{n}^{\ast}:=\frac{2n}{n-2}$ is the critical exponent in dimension $n.$\medskip
