NNLO soft functions for heavy-quark pair production at hadron colliders

We generalise the SoftSERVE framework for the automated computation of soft functions involving final-state heavy quarks in back-to-back kinematics up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong-coupling expansion. Our algorithm employs suitable phase-space parameterisations for both massive and mixed massless-massive contributions, allowing for an efficient numerical evaluation. Focusing on SCET$_\mathrm{I}$ observables that satisfy non-Abelian exponentiation, we present explicit results for the 0-jettiness soft function in hadronic top-quark pair production in the form of two-dimensional grids. We describe the renormalisation procedure in detail and discuss the singular behaviour of the tripole colour correlations in the threshold limit.

Modelling $b\bar b H$ production for the LHC at 13.6 TeV

We present new state-of-the-art predictions for Standard Model Higgs boson production in association with a bottom-quark pair ($b\bar bH$). Updated cross sections are computed in accordance with the recommendations of the LHC Higgs Working Group, including the use of the PDF4LHC21 set of parton distribution functions, with a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV. For the total inclusive cross section, we provide matched predictions of the massless five-flavour scheme and the massive four-flavour scheme at the fixed-order level. We further present recently obtained simulations matched to parton showers in both flavour schemes within the Standard Model, and also discuss them in the context of potential Beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios. In the massless scheme, we compare different next-to-next-to-leading order predictions matched to parton showers obtained through the MiNNLOPS and GENEVA generators. In addition, the role of four-flavour scheme predictions is studied as a background to $HH$ searches, considering both the top-quark and bottom-quark Yukawa contributions to $b\bar bH$ production. Finally, we analyse the sensitivity of the Higgs transverse momentum spectrum to light-quark Yukawa couplings in the diphoton decay channel based on MiNNLOPS simulations.

Resumming transverse observables for NNLO+PS matching in GENEVA

We study the use of higher-order resummation for transverse observables to achieve NNLO+PS matching within the GENEVA framework. In particular, we embed $q_T$ resummation for colour-singlet production at N$^3$LL obtained via soft-collinear effective theory and implemented in the library SCETlib within GENEVA. We also study for the first time the use of the generalised $N$-jettiness variable in parton shower matching, and achieve the resummation of the one-jettiness defined with transverse measures up to NLL$'$ accuracy. As a case study, we use these resummed calculations to construct a GENEVA NNLO+PS generator for Higgs boson production in heavy-quark annihilation (with beauty or charm-quarks in the initial state). The use of transverse measures facilitates the matching to showers ordered in transverse momentum, and opens the door to possible future extensions of this approach to the production of colour singlets in association with final-state jets.

Dimension-8 operators in $W^+W^-$ production via gluon fusion

We investigate the impact of dimension-8 operators on $W^+W^-$ production at the LHC for the incoming gluon-gluon channel. To this end, we have identified all dimension-8 CP-even operators contributing to the process in question, and computed the corresponding tree-level helicity amplitudes for fully-leptonic decays of the $W$ bosons. These are implemented in the program MCFM-RE, which automatically incorporates the effect of a jet-veto to reduce the otherwise overwhelming $t\bar t$ background. We find that, unless we break the hierarchy of the effective field theory (EFT), the interference of the dimension-8 operators with the Standard Model is negligible across the considered distributions. This justifies including the square of dimension-6 operators when performing EFT fits with this channel. We then present new constraints on CP-even and CP-odd dimension-6 operators within the EFT regime. Lastly, we postulate a scenario in which the hierarchy of the EFT is broken, justified by the strong constraints on dimension-6 operators from existing on-shell Higgs data. In this scenario, we discuss the constraints that can be reasonably set on CP-even dimension-8 operators with current and future data. We remark that the effect of the jet-veto on the ability to constrain new physics in the $W^+W^-$ channel is quite dramatic and must be properly taken into account.

Robust estimates of theoretical uncertainties at fixed-order in perturbation theory

Calculations truncated at a fixed order in perturbation theory are accompanied by an associated theoretical uncertainty, which encodes the missing higher orders (MHOU). This is typically estimated by a scale variation procedure, which has well-known shortcomings. In this work, we propose a simple prescription to directly encode the missing higher order terms using theory nuisance parameters (TNPs) and estimate the uncertainty by their variation. We study multiple processes relevant for Large Hadron Collider physics at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory, obtaining MHOU estimates for differential observables in each case. In cases where scale variations are well-behaved we are able to replicate their effects using TNPs, while we find significant improvement in cases where scale variation typically underestimates the uncertainty.

Jet veto resummation for STXS $H+$1-jet bins at aNNLL$'$+NNLO

Measurements of Higgs boson processes by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC use Simplified Template Cross Sections (STXS) as a common framework for the combination of measurements in different decay channels and their further interpretation, e.g. to measure Higgs couplings. The different Higgs production processes are measured in predefined kinematic regions -- the STXS bins -- requiring precise theory predictions for each individual bin. In gluon-fusion Higgs production a main division is into 0-jet, 1-jet, and $\geq 2$-jet bins, which are further subdivided in bins of the Higgs transverse momentum $p_T^H$. Requiring a fixed number of jets induces logarithms $\ln p_T^{\mathrm{cut}}/Q$ in the cross section where $p_T^{\mathrm{cut}}$ is the jet-$p_T$ threshold and $Q\sim p_T^H\sim m_H$ the hard-interaction scale. These jet-veto logarithms can be resummed to all orders in perturbation theory to achieve the highest possible perturbative precision. We provide state-of-the art predictions for the $p_T^H$ spectrum in exclusive $H+$1-jet production and the corresponding $H+$1-jet STXS bins in the kinematic regime $p_T^{\mathrm{cut}} \ll p_T^H\sim m_H$. We carry out the resummation at NNLL$'$ accuracy, using theory nuisance parameters to account for the few unknown ingredients at this order, and match to full NNLO. We revisit the jet-veto factorization for this process and find that it requires refactorizing the total soft function into a global and soft-collinear contribution in order to fully account for logarithms of the signal jet radius. The leading nonglobal logarithms are also included, though they are numerically small for the region of phenomenological interest.

Matching NNLO to parton shower using N$^3$LL colour-singlet transverse momentum resummation in GENEVA

We extend the GENEVA Monte Carlo framework using the transverse momentum of a colour-singlet system as the resolution variable. This allows us to use next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithm (N$^3$LL) resummation via the \radish formalism to obtain precise predictions for any colour-singlet production process at the fully exclusive level. Thanks to the implementation of two different resolution variables within the GENEVA framework, we are able to assess the impact of such a choice on differential observables for the first time. As a first application we present predictions for Drell-Yan lepton pair production at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD interfaced to a parton shower simulation that includes additional all-order radiative corrections. We provide fully showered and hadronised events using PYTHIA8, while retaining the NNLO QCD accuracy for observables which are inclusive over the additional radiation. We also show that it is possible to obtain a numerically good agreement between showered GENEVA predictions and the N$^3$LL resummation for the transverse momentum spectrum by choosing a more local recoil scheme. We compare our final predictions to LHC data at 13 TeV, finding good agreement across several distributions.

N$^3$LL resummation of one-jettiness for $Z$-boson plus jet production at hadron colliders

We present the resummation of one-jettiness for the colour-singlet plus jet production process $p p \to ( γ^*/Z \to \ell^+ \ell^-) + {\text{jet}}$ at hadron colliders up to the fourth logarithmic order (N$^3$LL). This is the first resummation at this order for processes involving three coloured partons at the Born level. We match our resummation formula to the corresponding fixed-order predictions, extending the validity of our results to regions of the phase space where further hard emissions are present. This result paves the way for the construction of next-to-next-to-leading order simulations for colour-singlet plus jet production matched to parton showers in the GENEVA framework.

Constraining the top-quark mass within the global MSHT PDF fit

We examine the ability of experimental measurements of top-quark pair production to constrain both the top-quark mass and the strong coupling within the global MSHT parton distribution function (PDF) fit. Specifically, we consider ATLAS and CMS measurements of differential distributions taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, as well as $t\bar{t}$ total cross section data taken at a variety of experiments, and compare to theoretical predictions including next-to-next-to-leading order corrections. We find that supplementing the global fit with this additional information results in relatively strong constraints on the top-quark mass, and is also able to bound the strong coupling in a limited fashion. Our final result is $m_t=173.0\pm0.6~\mathrm{GeV}$ and is compatible with the world average pole mass extracted from cross section measurements of $172.5\pm0.7~\mathrm{GeV}$ by the Particle Data Group. We also study the effect of different top-quark masses on the gluon parton distribution function, finding changes at high $x$ which nonetheless lie within the large PDF uncertainties in this region.

NNLO+PS $W^+W^-$ production using jet veto resummation at NNLL$'$

We construct a novel event generator for the process $p \> p \to \ell^- \> \barν_\ell \> \ell'^+ \> ν_{\ell'}$, which matches fixed-order predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling to a parton shower program. The matching is achieved using the GENEVA method, in this case exploiting a resummed calculation for the hardest jet transverse momentum at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy obtained via soft-collinear effective theory and implemented in the C++ library SCETlib. This choice of resolution variable ensures that the introduction of a jet veto, commonly used by experimental analyses to reject multi-jet background events, does not result in the appearance of unmitigated large logarithms for low veto scales before showering. After validating our partonic results against publicly available fixed order and resummed calculations, we compare our predictions to measurements taken at the ATLAS and CMS experiments, finding good agreement. This is the first NNLO+PS accurate event generator to use the hardest jet transverse momentum as a resolution variable.

Double Higgs production at NNLO interfaced to parton showers in GENEVA

In this work, we study the production of Higgs boson pairs at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD matched to parton showers, using the \textsc{Geneva} framework and working in the heavy-top-limit approximation. This includes the resummation of large logarithms of the zero-jettiness $\mathcal{T}_0$ up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-log accuracy. This process features an extremely large momentum transfer, which makes its study particularly relevant for matching schemes such as that employed in \textsc{Geneva}, where the resummation of a variable different from that used in the ordering of the parton shower is used. To further study this effect, we extend the original shower interface designed for \textsc{Pythia8} to include other parton showers, such as \textsc{Dire} and \textsc{Sherpa}.

The $q_T$ spectrum for Higgs production via heavy quark annihilation at N$^3$LL$'$+aN$^3$LO

We study the transverse momentum ($q_T$) spectrum of the Higgs boson produced via the annihilation of heavy quarks ($s,c,b$) in proton-proton collisions. Using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) and working in the five-flavour scheme, we provide predictions at three-loop order in resummed perturbation theory (N$^3$LL$'$). We match the resummed calculation to full fixed-order results at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), and introduce a decorrelation method to enable a consistent matching to an approximate N$^3$LO (aN$^3$LO) result. Since the $b$-quark initiated process exhibits large nonsingular corrections, it requires special care in the matching procedure and estimation of associated theoretical uncertainties, which we discuss in detail. Our results constitute the most accurate predictions to date for these processes in the small $q_T$ region and could be used to improve the determination of Higgs Yukawa couplings from the shape of the measured Higgs $q_T$ spectrum.

Refining the GENEVA method for Higgs boson production via gluon fusion

We describe a number of improvements to the GENEVA method for matching NNLO calculations to parton shower programs. In particular, we detail changes to the resummed calculation used in the matching procedure, including disentangling the cross section dependence on factorisation and beam scales, and an improved treatment of timelike logarithms. We also discuss modifications in the implementation of the splitting functions which serve to make the resummed calculation differential in the higher multiplicity phase space. These changes improve the stability of the numerical cancellation of the nonsingular term at small values of the resolution parameter. As a case study, we consider the gluon-initiated Higgs boson production process $gg\to H$. We validate the NNLO accuracy of our predictions against independent calculations, and compare our showered and hadronised results with recent data taken at the ATLAS and CMS experiments in the diphoton decay channel, finding good agreement.

Zero-jettiness resummation for top-quark pair production at the LHC

We study the resummation of the $0$-jettiness resolution variable $\mathcal{T}_0$ for the top-quark pair production process in hadronic collisions. Starting from an effective theory framework we derive a factorisation formula for this observable which allows its resummation at any logarithmic order in the $\mathcal{T}_0\to 0$ limit. We then calculate the $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ corrections to the soft function matrices and, by employing renormalisation group equation methods, we obtain the ingredients for the resummation formula up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic ($\mathrm{NNLL}$) accuracy. We study the impact of these corrections to the $0$-jettiness distribution by comparing predictions at different accuracy orders: $\mathrm{NLL}$, $\mathrm{NLL}^\prime$, $\mathrm{NNLL}$ and approximate $\mathrm{NNLL}^\prime$ ($\mathrm{NNLL}^\prime_{\text{a}}$). We match these results to the corresponding fixed order calculations both at leading order and next-to-leading order for the $t\bar{t}+$jet production process, obtaining the most accurate prediction of the $0$-jettiness distribution for the top-quark pair production process at $\mathrm{NNLL}^\prime_{\text{a}}+\mathrm{NLO}$ accuracy.

$Wγ$ production at NNLO+PS accuracy in GENEVA

We present an event generator for the process $pp\to \ellν_\ellγ$ at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD and matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower. The calculation makes use of the GENEVA framework, which combines a resummed calculation obtained via Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) with the fixed-order result. We validate the NNLO accuracy of our results by comparing predictions for inclusive quantities with an independent fixed-order calculation, and then present the resummed 0-jettiness spectrum at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL$'$) accuracy. Finally, we compare our predictions against data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during its 7 TeV run, finding good agreement.

Resummed predictions for hadronic Higgs boson decays

We present the NNLL$'$ resummed $2$-jettiness distribution for decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson to a $b\bar{b}$-quark pair and to gluons. The calculation exploits a factorisation formula derived using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, in which large logarithms of the $2$-jettiness are resummed by renormalisation group evolution of the hard, soft and jet contributions to the differential decay rate. We match the resummed predictions to the fixed-order NNLO result using the GENEVA framework, extending the validity of the results to all values of the resolution variable and providing a fully exclusive NNLO event generator matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower.

Next-to-next-to-leading order event generation for $Z$ boson pair production matched to parton shower

We present a novel next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculation matched to parton shower for the production of a pair of $Z$ bosons decaying to four massless leptons, $p p \to \ell^+ \ell^- \ell'^+ \ell'^- + X$, at the LHC. Spin correlations, interferences and off-shell effects are included throughout. Our result is based on the resummed beam-thrust spectrum, which we evaluate at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL$'_{\mathcal{T}_0}$) accuracy for the first time for this process, and makes use of the GENEVA Monte Carlo framework for the matching to PYTHIA8 shower and hadronisation models. We compare our predictions with data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at 13 TeV, finding a good agreement.

Precise predictions for photon pair production matched to parton showers in GENEVA

We present a new calculation for the production of isolated photon pairs at the LHC with NNLL$'_{\mathcal{T}_0}$+NNLO accuracy. This is the first implementation within the GENEVA Monte Carlo framework of a process with a nontrivial Born-level definition which suffers from QED singularities. Throughout the computation we use a smooth-cone isolation algorithm to remove such divergences. The higher-order resummation of the 0-jettiness resolution variable $\mathcal{T}_0$ is based on a factorisation formula derived within Soft-Collinear Effective Theory which predicts all of the singular, virtual and real NNLO corrections. Starting from this precise parton-level prediction and by employing the GENEVA method, we provide fully showered and hadronised events using PYTHIA8, while retaining the NNLO QCD accuracy for observables which are inclusive over the additional radiation. We compare our final predictions to LHC data at 7 TeV and find good agreement.
