Anderson localization of walking droplets

Understanding the ability of particles to maneuver through disordered environments is a central problem in innumerable settings, from active matter and biology to electronics. Macroscopic particles ultimately exhibit diffusive motion when their energy exceeds the characteristic potential barrier of the random landscape. In stark contrast, wave-particle duality causes electrons in sufficiently disordered media to come to rest even when the potential is weak -- a remarkable phenomenon known as Anderson localization. Here, we present a hydrodynamic active system with wave-particle features, a millimetric droplet self-guided by its own wave field over a submerged random topography, whose dynamics exhibits localized statistics analogous to those of electronic systems. Consideration of an ensemble of particle trajectories reveals a suppression of diffusion when the guiding wave field extends over the disordered topography. We rationalize mechanistically the emergent statistics by virtue of the wave-mediated resonant coupling between the droplet and topography, which produces an attractive wave potential about the localization region. This hydrodynamic analog, which demonstrates how a classical particle may localize like a wave, suggests new directions for future research in various areas, including active matter, wave localization, many-body localization, and topological matter.

Resonant triad interactions of gravity waves in cylindrical basins

We present the results of a theoretical investigation into the existence, evolution and excitation of resonant triads of nonlinear free-surface gravity waves confined to a cylinder of finite depth. It is well known that resonant triads are impossible for gravity waves in laterally unbounded domains; we demonstrate, however, that horizontal confinement of the fluid may induce resonant triads for particular fluid depths. For any three correlated wave modes arising in a cylinder of arbitrary cross-section, we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a depth at which nonlinear resonance may arise, and show that the resultant critical depth is unique. We enumerate the low-frequency triads for circular cylinders, including a new class of resonances between standing and counter-propagating waves, and also briefly discuss annular and rectangular cylinders. Upon deriving the triad amplitude equations for a finite-depth cylinder of arbitrary cross-section, we deduce that the triad evolution is always periodic, and determine parameters controlling the efficiency of energy exchange. In order to excite a particular triad, we explore the influence of external forcing; in this case, the triad evolution may be periodic, quasi-periodic, or chaotic. Finally, our results have potential implications on resonant water waves in man-made and natural basins, such as industrial-scale fluid tanks, harbours and bays.

A discrete complex Ginzburg-Landau equation for a hydrodynamic active lattice

A discrete and periodic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, coupled to a discrete mean equation, is systematically derived from a driven and dissipative oscillator model, close to the onset of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The oscillator model is inspired by recent experiments exploring active vibrations of quasi-one-dimensional lattices of self-propelled millimetric droplets bouncing on a vertically vibrating fluid bath. Our systematic derivation provides a direct link between the constitutive properties of the lattice system and the coefficients of the resultant amplitude equations, paving the way to compare the emergent nonlinear dynamics---namely discrete bright and dark solitons, breathers, and traveling waves---against experiments. Further, the amplitude equations allow us to rationalize the successive bifurcations leading to these distinct dynamical states. The framework presented herein is expected to be applicable to a wider class of oscillators characterized by the presence of a dynamic coupling potential between particles. More broadly, our results point to deeper connections between nonlinear oscillators and the physics of active and driven matter.

Collective vibrations of a hydrodynamic active lattice

Recent experiments show that quasi-one-dimensional lattices of self-propelled droplets exhibit collective instabilities in the form of out-of-phase oscillations and solitary-like waves. This hydrodynamic lattice is driven by the external forcing of a vertically vibrating fluid bath, which invokes a field of subcritical Faraday waves on the bath surface, mediating the spatio-temporal droplet coupling.By modelling the droplet lattice as a memory-endowed system with spatially nonlocal coupling, we herein rationalise the form and onset of instability in this new class of dynamical oscillator. We identify the memory-driven instability of the lattice as a function of the number of droplets, and determine equispaced lattice configurations precluded by geometrical constraints. Each memory-driven instability is then classified as either a super- or sub-critical Hopf bifurcation \emph{via} a systematic weakly nonlinear analysis, rationalising experimental observations. We further discover a previously unreported symmetry-breaking instability, manifest as an oscillatory-rotary motion of the lattice. Numerical simulations support our findings and prompt further investigations of this nonlinear dynamical system.
