Making sense of the divergent series for reconstructing a Hamiltonian from its eigenstates and eigenvalues

In quantum mechanics the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian form a complete basis. However, physicists conventionally express completeness as a formal sum over the eigenstates, and this sum is typically a divergent series if the Hilbert space is infinite dimensional. Furthermore, while the Hamiltonian can be reconstructed formally as a sum over its eigenvalues and eigenstates, this series is typically even more divergent. For the simple cases of the square-well and the harmonic-oscillator potentials this paper explains how to use the elementary procedure of Euler summation to sum these divergent series and thereby to make sense of the formal statement of the completeness of the formal sum that represents the reconstruction of the Hamiltonian.

Outsider Trading

In this paper we examine inefficiencies and information disparity in the Japanese stock market. By carefully analysing information publicly available on the internet, an `outsider' to conventional statistical arbitrage strategies--which are based on market microstructure, company releases, or analyst reports--can nevertheless pursue a profitable trading strategy. A large volume of blog data is used to demonstrate the existence of an inefficiency in the market. An information-based model that replicates the trading strategy is developed to estimate the degree of information disparity.

Entanglement Induced Phase Transitions

Starting from the canonical ensemble over the space of pure quantum states, we obtain an integral representation for the partition function. This is used to calculate the magnetisation of a system of N spin-1/2 particles. The results suggest the existence of a new type of first order phase transition that occurs at zero temperature in the absence of spin-spin interactions. The transition arises as a consequence of quantum entanglement. The effects of internal interactions are analysed and the behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility for a small number of interacting spins is determined.
