Can Fermi surface nesting alone drive the charge-density-wave transition in monolayer vanadium diselenide?

We demonstrate that charge-density-wave formation is possible via a purely electronic mechanism in monolayers of the transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-VSe$_2$. Via a renormalization group treatment of an extended Hubbard model we examine the competition of superconducting and density-wave fluctuations as sections of the Fermi surface are tuned to perfect nesting. We find regions of charge-density-wave order when the Heisenberg exchange interaction is comparable to the Coulomb repulsion, and $d$-wave superconductivity for purely repulsive interactions. We discuss the possible role of lattice vibrations in enhancing the effective Heisenberg exchange.

Mixed-parity superconductivity near Lifshitz transitions in strongly spin-orbit-coupled metals

We consider a strongly spin-orbit-coupled metal, one of whose Fermi surfaces is close to a Lifshitz (topological) transition. Via a renormalization group analysis of the square-lattice Hubbard model with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we show that such a metal is generically unstable to the formation of mixed-parity superconductivity with a helical triplet component.

Non-Fermi liquid fixed points and anomalous Landau damping in a quantum critical metal

We present a functional renormalization group calculation of the properties of a quantum critical metal in $d=2$ spatial dimensions. Our theory describes a general class of Pomeranchuk instabilities with $N_b$ flavors of boson. At small $N_b$ we find a family of fixed points characterized by weakly non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the conduction electrons and $z \approx 2$ critical dynamics for the order parameter fluctuations, in agreement with the scaling observed by Schattner et al. [Phys. Rev. X 6, 031028 (2016)] for the Ising-nematic transition. Contrary to recent suggestions that this represents an intermediate regime en route to the scaling limit, our calculation suggests that this behavior may persist all the way to the critical point. As the number of bosons $N_b$ is increased, the model's fixed-point properties cross over to $z \approx 1$ scaling and non-Fermi-liquid behavior similar to that obtained by Fitzpatrick et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 125116 (2013)].

Asymptotic safety of scalar field theories

We study $3d$ $O(N)$ symmetric scalar field theories using Polchinski's renormalisation group. In the infinite $N$ limit the model is solved exactly including at strong coupling. At short distances the theory is described by a line of asymptotically safe ultraviolet fixed points bounded by asymptotic freedom at weak, and the Bardeen-Moshe-Bander phenomenon at strong sextic coupling. The Wilson-Fisher fixed point arises as an isolated low-energy fixed point. Further results include the conformal window for asymptotic safety, convergence-limiting poles in the complex field plane, and the phase diagram with regions of first and second order phase transitions. We substantiate a duality between Polchinski's and Wetterich's versions of the functional renormalisation group, also showing that that eigenperturbations are identical at any fixed point. At a critical sextic coupling, the duality is worked out in detail to explain the spontaneous breaking of scale symmetry responsible for the generation of a light dilaton. Implications for asymptotic safety in other theories are indicated.
