Independent sets of a given size and structure in the hypercube

We determine the asymptotics of the number of independent sets of size $\lfloor β2^{d-1} \rfloor$ in the discrete hypercube $Q_d = \{0,1\}^d$ for any fixed $β\in [0,1]$ as $d \to \infty$, extending a result of Galvin for $β\in [1-1/\sqrt{2},1]$. Moreover, we prove a multivariate local central limit theorem for structural features of independent sets in $Q_d$ drawn according to the hard core model at any fixed fugacity $λ>0$. In proving these results we develop several general tools for performing combinatorial enumeration using polymer models and the cluster expansion from statistical physics along with local central limit theorems.

Independent sets in the hypercube revisited

We revisit Sapozhenko's classic proof on the asymptotics of the number of independent sets in the discrete hypercube $\{0,1\}^d$ and Galvin's follow-up work on weighted independent sets. We combine Sapozhenko's graph container methods with the cluster expansion and abstract polymer models, two tools from statistical physics, to obtain considerably sharper asymptotics and detailed probabilistic information about the typical structure of (weighted) independent sets in the hypercube. These results refine those of Korshunov and Sapozhenko and Galvin, and answer several questions of Galvin.

Finite-size scaling, phase coexistence, and algorithms for the random cluster model on random graphs

For $Δ\ge 5$ and $q$ large as a function of $Δ$, we give a detailed picture of the phase transition of the random cluster model on random $Δ$-regular graphs. In particular, we determine the limiting distribution of the weights of the ordered and disordered phases at criticality and prove exponential decay of correlations and central limit theorems away from criticality. Our techniques are based on using polymer models and the cluster expansion to control deviations from the ordered and disordered ground states. These techniques also yield efficient approximate counting and sampling algorithms for the Potts and random cluster models on random $Δ$-regular graphs at all temperatures when $q$ is large. This includes the critical temperature at which it is known the Glauber and Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the Potts model mix slowly. We further prove new slow-mixing results for Markov chains, most notably that the Swendsen-Wang dynamics mix exponentially slowly throughout an open interval containing the critical temperature. This was previously only known at the critical temperature. Many of our results apply more generally to $Δ$-regular graphs satisfying a small-set expansion condition.

Approximately counting independent sets in bipartite graphs via graph containers

By implementing algorithmic versions of Sapozhenko's graph container methods, we give new algorithms for approximating the number of independent sets in bipartite graphs. Our first algorithm applies to $d$-regular, bipartite graphs satisfying a weak expansion condition: when $d$ is constant, and the graph is a bipartite $Ω( \log^2 d/d)$-expander, we obtain an FPTAS for the number of independent sets. Previously such a result for $d>5$ was known only for graphs satisfying the much stronger expansion conditions of random bipartite graphs. The algorithm also applies to weighted independent sets: for a $d$-regular, bipartite $α$-expander, with $α>0$ fixed, we give an FPTAS for the hard-core model partition function at fugacity $λ=Ω(\log d / d^{1/4})$. Finally we present an algorithm that applies to all $d$-regular, bipartite graphs, runs in time $\exp\left( O\left( n \cdot \frac{ \log^3 d }{d } \right) \right)$, and outputs a $(1 + o(1))$-approximation to the number of independent sets.

A proof of the Upper Matching Conjecture for large graphs

We prove that the `Upper Matching Conjecture' of Friedland, Krop, and Markström and the analogous conjecture of Kahn for independent sets in regular graphs hold for all large enough graphs as a function of the degree. That is, for every $d$ and every large enough $n$ divisible by $2d$, a union of $n/(2d)$ copies of the complete $d$-regular bipartite graph maximizes the number of independent sets and matchings of size $k$ for each $k$ over all $d$-regular graphs on $n$ vertices. To prove this we utilize the cluster expansion for the canonical ensemble of a statistical physics spin model, and we give some further applications of this method to maximizing and minimizing the number of independent sets and matchings of a given size in regular graphs of a given minimum girth.

Homomorphisms from the torus

We present a detailed probabilistic and structural analysis of the set of weighted homomorphisms from the discrete torus $\mathbb{Z}_m^n$, where $m$ is even, to any fixed graph: we show that the corresponding probability distribution on such homomorphisms is close to a distribution defined constructively as a certain random perturbation of some dominant phase. This has several consequences, including solutions (in a strong form) to conjectures of Engbers and Galvin and a conjecture of Kahn and Park. Special cases include sharp asymptotics for the number of independent sets and the number of proper $q$-colourings of $\mathbb{Z}_m^n$ (so in particular, the discrete hypercube). We give further applications to the study of height functions and (generalised) rank functions on the discrete hypercube and disprove a conjecture of Kahn and Lawrenz. For the proof we combine methods from statistical physics, entropy and graph containers and exploit isoperimetric and algebraic properties of the torus.

Singularity of random symmetric matrices revisited

Let $M_n$ be drawn uniformly from all $\pm 1$ symmetric $n \times n$ matrices. We show that the probability that $M_n$ is singular is at most $\exp(-c(n\log n)^{1/2})$, which represents a natural barrier in recent approaches to this problem. In addition to improving on the best-known previous bound of Campos, Mattos, Morris and Morrison of $\exp(-c n^{1/2})$ on the singularity probability, our method is different and considerably simpler.

Algorithms for #BIS-hard problems on expander graphs

We give an FPTAS and an efficient sampling algorithm for the high-fugacity hard-core model on bounded-degree bipartite expander graphs and the low-temperature ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded-degree expander graphs. The results apply, for example, to random (bipartite) $Δ$-regular graphs, for which no efficient algorithms were known for these problems (with the exception of the Ising model) in the non-uniqueness regime of the infinite $Δ$-regular tree. We also find efficient counting and sampling algorithms for proper $q$-colorings of random $Δ$-regular bipartite graphs when $q$ is sufficiently small as a function of $Δ$.

Independent Sets, Matchings, and Occupancy Fractions

We prove tight upper bounds on the logarithmic derivative of the independence and matching polynomials of d-regular graphs. For independent sets, this theorem is a strengthening of the results of Kahn, Galvin and Tetali, and Zhao showing that a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$ maximizes the number of independent sets and the independence polynomial of a d-regular graph. For matchings, this shows that the matching polynomial and the total number of matchings of a d-regular graph are maximized by a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$. Using this we prove the asymptotic upper matching conjecture of Friedland, Krop, Lundow, and Markström. In probabilistic language, our main theorems state that for all d-regular graphs and all $λ$, the occupancy fraction of the hard-core model and the edge occupancy fraction of the monomer-dimer model with fugacity $λ$ are maximized by $K_{d,d}$. Our method involves constrained optimization problems over distributions of random variables and applies to all d-regular graphs directly, without a reduction to the bipartite case.

Distinct degrees in induced subgraphs

An important theme of recent research in Ramsey theory has been establishing pseudorandomness properties of Ramsey graphs. An $N$-vertex graph is called $C$-Ramsey if it has no homogeneous set of size $C\log N$. A theorem of Bukh and Sudakov, solving a conjecture of Erdős, Faudree and Sós, shows that any $C$-Ramsey $N$-vertex graph contains an induced subgraph with $Ω_C(N^{1/2})$ distinct degrees. We improve this to $Ω_C(N^{2/3})$, which is tight up to the constant factor. We also show that any $N$-vertex graph with $N > (k-1)(n-1)$ and $n\geq n_0(k) = Ω(k^9)$ either contains a homogeneous set of order $n$ or an induced subgraph with $k$ distinct degrees. The lower bound on $N$ here is sharp, as shown by an appropriate Turán graph, and confirms a conjecture of Narayanan and Tomon.

The multicolour size-Ramsey number of powers of paths

Given a positive integer $s$, a graph $G$ is $s$-Ramsey for a graph $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_s$, if every $s$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number ${\hat{r}}_s(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be ${\hat{r}}_s(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_s\}$. We prove that, for all positive integers $k$ and $s$, we have ${\hat{r}}_s(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$.

On kissing numbers and spherical codes in high dimensions

We prove a lower bound of $Ω(d^{3/2} \cdot (2/\sqrt{3})^d)$ on the kissing number in dimension $d$. This improves the classical lower bound of Chabauty, Shannon, and Wyner by a linear factor in the dimension. We obtain a similar linear factor improvement to the best known lower bound on the maximal size of a spherical code of acute angle $θ$ in high dimensions.

Tight bounds on the coefficients of partition functions via stability

Partition functions arise in statistical physics and probability theory as the normalizing constant of Gibbs measures and in combinatorics and graph theory as graph polynomials. For instance the partition functions of the hard-core model and monomer-dimer model are the independence and matching polynomials respectively. We show how stability results follow naturally from the recently developed occupancy method for maximizing and minimizing physical observables over classes of regular graphs, and then show these stability results can be used to obtain tight extremal bounds on the individual coefficients of the corresponding partition functions. As applications, we prove new bounds on the number of independent sets and matchings of a given size in regular graphs. For large enough graphs and almost all sizes, the bounds are tight and confirm the Upper Matching Conjecture of Friedland, Krop, and Markström and a conjecture of Kahn on independent sets for a wide range of parameters. Additionally we prove tight bounds on the number of $q$-colorings of cubic graphs with a given number of monochromatic edges, and tight bounds on the number of independent sets of a given size in cubic graphs of girth at least $5$.

On the hard sphere model and sphere packings in high dimensions

We prove a lower bound on the entropy of sphere packings of $\mathbb R^d$ of density $Θ(d \cdot 2^{-d})$. The entropy measures how plentiful such packings are, and our result is significantly stronger than the trivial lower bound that can be obtained from the mere existence of a dense packing. Our method also provides a new, statistical-physics-based proof of the $Ω(d \cdot 2^{-d})$ lower bound on the maximum sphere packing density by showing that the expected packing density of a random configuration from the hard sphere model is at least $(1+o_d(1)) \log(2/\sqrt{3}) d \cdot 2^{-d}$ when the ratio of the fugacity parameter to the volume covered by a single sphere is at least $3^{-d/2}$. Such a bound on the sphere packing density was first achieved by Rogers, with subsequent improvements to the leading constant by Davenport and Rogers, Ball, Vance, and Venkatesh.

The size-Ramsey number of powers of paths

Given graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $q$ say that $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_q$, if every $q$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The size-Ramsey number $\hat{r}(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be $\hat{r}(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_2\}$. Answering a question of Conlon, we prove that, for every fixed $k$, we have $\hat{r}(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$-th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$ (i.e. , the graph with vertex set $V(P_n)$ and all edges $\{u,v\}$ such that the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $P_n$ is at most $k$). Our proof is probabilistic, but can also be made constructive.

Extremes of the internal energy of the Potts model on cubic graphs

We prove tight upper and lower bounds on the internal energy per particle (expected number of monochromatic edges per vertex) in the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on cubic graphs at every temperature and for all $q \ge 2$. This immediately implies corresponding tight bounds on the anti-ferromagnetic Potts partition function. Taking the zero-temperature limit gives new results in extremal combinatorics: the number of $q$-colorings of a $3$-regular graph, for any $q \ge 2$, is maximized by a union of $K_{3,3}$'s. This proves the $d=3$ case of a conjecture of Galvin and Tetali.

On the average size of independent sets in triangle-free graphs

We prove an asymptotically tight lower bound on the average size of independent sets in a triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $d$, showing that an independent set drawn uniformly at random from such a graph has expected size at least $(1+o_d(1)) \frac{\log d}{d}n$. This gives an alternative proof of Shearer's upper bound on the Ramsey number $R(3,k)$. We then prove that the total number of independent sets in a triangle-free graph with maximum degree $d$ is at least $\exp \left[\left(\frac{1}{2}+o_d(1) \right) \frac{\log^2 d}{d}n \right]$. The constant $1/2$ in the exponent is best possible. In both cases, tightness is exhibited by a random $d$-regular graph. Both results come from considering the hard-core model from statistical physics: a random independent set $I$ drawn from a graph with probability proportional to $λ^{|I|}$, for a fugacity parameter $λ>0$. We prove a general lower bound on the occupancy fraction (normalized expected size of the random independent set) of the hard-core model on triangle-free graphs of maximum degree $d$. The bound is asymptotically tight in $d$ for all $λ=O_d(1)$. We conclude by stating several conjectures on the relationship between the average and maximum size of an independent set in a triangle-free graph and give some consequences of these conjectures in Ramsey theory.
