$\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology of schemes

Voevodsky outlined a conjectural programme that his slice filtration in motivic homotopy theory should give rise to a good theory of $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology. This paper achieves his vision in the generality of arbitrary quasicompact, quasiseparated schemes, by introducing a theory of $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology which is related to Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory via an Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and which we compare to \'etale and syntomic cohomology in the style of the original conjectures of Beilinson and Lichtenbaum. In addition, it is represented by an absolute motivic spectrum and therefore satisfies cdh descent, and modules over it offer a candidate for the derived category of $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motives. We establish some of Voevodsky's open conjectures on slices, in particular relating the zeroth slice of the motivic sphere to homotopy $K$-theory. In the final section we prove analogous results for the Hermitian $K$-theory of qcqs schemes on which $2$ is invertible. As an auxiliary tool we introduce cdh-motivic cohomology, defined as the cdh sheafification of the left Kan extension of the motivic cohomology of smooth $\mathbb{Z}$-schemes. We offer a new approach to control the latter, independent of previous work on $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology of smooth schemes over mixed characteristic Dedekind domains: our approach is based on recent developments in $p$-adic cohomology, in particular syntomic and prismatic cohomology. The cdh-motivic cohomology is also a necessary ingredient in the last two authors' and Bouis' construction of non-$\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology of qcqs schemes.

Motivic cohomology of equicharacteristic schemes

We construct a theory of motivic cohomology for quasi-compact, quasi-separated schemes of equal characteristic, which is related to non-connective algebraic $K$-theory via an Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and to \'etale cohomology in the range predicted by Beilinson and Lichtenbaum. On smooth varieties over a field our theory recovers classical motivic cohomology, defined for example via Bloch's cycle complex. Our construction uses trace methods and (topological) cyclic homology. As predicted by the behaviour of algebraic $K$-theory, the motivic cohomology is in general sensitive to singularities, including non-reduced structure, and is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant. It nevertheless has good geometric properties, satisfying for example the projective bundle formula and pro cdh descent. Further properties of the theory include a Nesterenko--Suslin comparison isomorphism to Milnor $K$-theory, and a vanishing range which simultaneously refines Weibel's conjecture about negative $K$-theory and a vanishing result of Soul\'e for the Adams eigenspaces of higher algebraic $K$-groups. We also explore the relation of the theory to algebraic cycles, showing in particular that the Levine--Weibel Chow group of zero cycles on a surface arises as a motivic cohomology group.

The K-theory of perfectoid rings

We establish various properties of the p-adic algebraic K-theory of smooth algebras over perfectoid rings living over perfectoid valuation rings. In particular, the p-adic K-theory of such rings is homotopy invariant, and coincides with the p-adic K-theory of the p-adic generic fibre in high degrees. In the case of smooth algebras over perfectoid valuation rings of mixed characteristic the latter isomorphism holds in all degrees and generalises a result of Nizio{\l}.

Milnor $K$-theory of $p$-adic rings

We study the mod $p^r$ Milnor $K$-groups of $p$-adically complete and $p$-henselian rings, establishing in particular a Nesterenko-Suslin style description in terms of the Milnor range of syntomic cohomology. In the case of smooth schemes over complete discrete valuation rings we prove the mod $p^r$ Gersten conjecture for Milnor $K$-theory locally in the Nisnevich topology. In characteristic $p$ we show that the Bloch-Kato-Gabber theorem remains true for valuation rings, and for regular formal schemes in a pro sense.

Generalised representations as q-connections in integral $p$-adic Hodge theory

We relate various approaches to coefficient systems in relative integral $p$-adic Hodge theory, working in the geometric context over the ring of integers of a perfectoid field. These include small generalised representations over $A_{\text{inf}}$ inspired by Faltings, modules with q-connection in the sense of q-de Rham cohomology, crystals on the prismatic site of Bhatt--Scholze, and q-deformations of Higgs bundles.

K-theory and topological cyclic homology of henselian pairs

Given a henselian pair $(R, I)$ of commutative rings, we show that the relative $K$-theory and relative topological cyclic homology with finite coefficients are identified via the cyclotomic trace $K \to \mathrm{TC}$. This yields a generalization of the classical Gabber-Gillet-Thomason-Suslin rigidity theorem (for mod $n$ coefficients, with $n$ invertible in $R$) and McCarthy's theorem on relative $K$-theory (when $I$ is nilpotent). We deduce that the cyclotomic trace is an equivalence in large degrees between $p$-adic $K$-theory and topological cyclic homology for a large class of $p$-adic rings. In addition, we show that $K$-theory with finite coefficients satisfies continuity for complete noetherian rings which are $F$-finite modulo $p$. Our main new ingredient is a basic finiteness property of $\mathrm{TC}$ with finite coefficients.

On the Beilinson fiber square

Using topological cyclic homology, we give a refinement of Beilinson's $p$-adic Goodwillie isomorphism between relative continuous $K$-theory and cyclic homology. As a result, we generalize results of Bloch-Esnault-Kerz and Beilinson on the $p$-adic deformations of $K$-theory classes. Furthermore, we prove structural results for the Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze filtration on $TC$ and identify the graded pieces with the syntomic cohomology of Fontaine-Messing.

Topological Hochschild homology and integral $p$-adic Hodge theory

In mixed characteristic and in equal characteristic $p$ we define a filtration on topological Hochschild homology and its variants. This filtration is an analogue of the filtration of algebraic $K$-theory by motivic cohomology. Its graded pieces are related in mixed characteristic to the complex $AΩ$ constructed in our previous work, and in equal characteristic $p$ to crystalline cohomology. Our construction of the filtration on $\mathrm{THH}$ is via flat descent to semiperfectoid rings. As one application, we refine the construction of the $AΩ$-complex by giving a cohomological construction of Breuil--Kisin modules for proper smooth formal schemes over $\mathcal O_K$, where $K$ is a discretely valued extension of $\mathbb Q_p$ with perfect residue field. As another application, we define syntomic sheaves $\mathbb Z_p(n)$ for all $n\geq 0$ on a large class of $\mathbb Z_p$-algebras, and identify them in terms of $p$-adic nearby cycles in mixed characteristic, and in terms of logarithmic de~Rham-Witt sheaves in equal characteristic $p$.

Integral p-adic Hodge theory

We construct a new cohomology theory for proper smooth (formal) schemes over the ring of integers of C_p. It takes values in a mixed-characteristic analogue of Dieudonne modules, which was previously defined by Fargues as a version of Breuil-Kisin modules. Notably, this cohomology theory specializes to all other known p-adic cohomology theories, such as crystalline, de Rham and etale cohomology, which allows us to prove strong integral comparison theorems. The construction of the cohomology theory relies on Faltings's almost purity theorem, along with a certain functor $Lη$ on the derived category, defined previously by Berthelot-Ogus. On affine pieces, our cohomology theory admits a relation to the theory of de Rham-Witt complexes of Langer-Zink, and can be computed as a q-deformation of de Rham cohomology.

$K$-theory of valuation rings

We prove several results showing that the algebraic $K$-theory of valuation rings behave as though such rings were regular Noetherian, in particular an analogue of the Geisser--Levine theorem. We also give some new proofs of known results concerning cdh descent of algebraic $K$-theory.

A historical overview of pro cdh descent in algebraic $K$-theory and its relation to rigid analytic varieties

This note was prepared after the workshop on cdh descent and algebraic $K$-theory in Hara-mura, Japan (1 - 5 Sept. 2016), to complement the author's talk on the history and applications of pro cdh descent. In the final section pro cdh descent is used to define $K$-groups of rigid analytic varieties. This note was revised and released in light of Kerz, Strunk, and Tamme establishing pro cdh descent in general (arXiv:1611.08466).

Notes on the A_inf-cohomology of Integral p-adic Hodge theory

We present a detailed overview of the construction of the A_inf-cohomology theory from the preprint "Integral p-adic Hodge theory", joint with B. Bhatt and P. Scholze. We focus particularly on the p-adic analogue of the Cartier isomorphism via relative de Rham--Witt complexes.

Analogues of Gersten's conjecture for singular schemes

We formulate analogues, for Noetherian local $\mathbb Q$-algebras which are not necessarily regular, of the injectivity part of Gersten's conjecture in algebraic $K$-theory, and prove them in various cases. Our results suggest that the algebraic $K$-theory of such a ring should be detected by combining the algebraic $K$-theory of both its regular locus and the infinitesimal thickenings of its singular locus.

$K$-theory and logarithmic Hodge-Witt sheaves of formal schemes in characteristic $p$

We describe the mod $p^r$ pro $K$-groups $\{K_n(A/I^s)/p^r\}_s$ of a regular local $\mathbb F_p$-algebra $A$ modulo powers of a suitable ideal $I$, in terms of logarithmic Hodge-Witt groups, by proving pro analogues of the theorems of Geisser-Levine and Bloch-Kato-Gabber. This is achieved by combining the pro Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem in topological cyclic homology with the development of the theory of de Rham-Witt complexes and logarithmic Hodge-Witt sheaves on formal schemes in characteristic $p$. Applications include the following: the infinitesimal part of the weak Lefschetz conjecture for Chow groups; a $p$-adic version of Kato-Saito's conjecture that their Zariski and Nisnevich higher dimensional class groups are isomorphic; continuity results in $K$-theory; and criteria, in terms of integral or torsion étale-motivic cycle classes, for algebraic cycles on formal schemes to admit infinitesimal deformations. Moreover, in the case $n=1$, we compare the étale cohomology of $W_rΩ^1_\text{log}$ and the fppf cohomology of $\mathbfμ_{p^r}$ on a formal scheme, and thus present equivalent conditions for line bundles to deform in terms of their classes in either of these cohomologies.

Integral $p$-adic Hodge theory - announcement

Given a proper, smooth (formal) scheme over the ring of integers of $\mathbb C_p$, we prove that if the crystalline cohomology of its special fibre is torsion-free then the $p$-adic étale cohomology of its generic fibre is also torsion-free. In this announcement we sketch the proof, which relies on the construction of a new cohomology theory interpolating between crystalline and étale cohomology. Further details and results, including a comparison isomorphism, will be presented in the full forthcoming article.

Zero cycles on singular varieties and their desingularisations

We use pro cdh-descent of $K$-theory to study the relationship between the zero cycles on a singular variety $X$ and those on its desingularisation $X'$. We prove many cases of a conjecture of S. Bloch and V. Srinivas, and relate the Chow groups of $X$ to the Kerz--Saito Chow group with modulus of $X'$ relative to its exceptional fibre.

Pro unitality and pro excision in algebraic K-theory and cyclic homology

We study pro excision in algebraic K-theory, following Suslin--Wodzicki, Cuntz--Quillen, Cortiñas, and Geisser--Hesselholt, as well as Artin--Rees and continuity properties of André--Quillen, Hochschild, and cyclic homology. Our key tool is to first establish the equivalence of various pro Tor vanishing conditions which appear in the literature. Using this we prove that all ideals of commutative, Noetherian rings are pro unital in a certain sense, and show that such ideals satisfy pro excision in $K$-theory as well as in cyclic and topological cyclic homology. In addition, our techniques yield a strong form of the pro Hochschild--Kostant--Rosenberg theorem, an extension to general base rings of the Cuntz--Quillen excision theorem in periodic cyclic homology, and a generalisation of the Fe\uıgin--Tsygan theorem.
