Progress towards efficient 4-level photon echo memories

Quantum memories could benefit many devices in quantum information processing. For a quantum to be useful in real-world applications, the quantum memory must have a high recall efficiency. Here we demonstrate an efficient (up to 80%) spin-storage quantum memory in Er:YSO, using the 4-level rephased amplified spontaneous emission protocol. We show non-classical correlations between the ASE and RASE fields produced by the quantum memory. Also, we demonstrate the storage of 70 temporal modes, with a write time of 150 us, and a storage time of 25 us. Finally, a clear pathway is presented to improve the efficiency, storage time, and mode capacity. Such a device would have applications in quantum networking and measurement-based quantum computing.

Update on the German and Australasian Optical Ground Station Networks

Networks of ground stations designed to transmit and receive at optical wavelengths through the atmosphere offer an opportunity to provide on-demand, high-bandwidth, secure communications with spacecraft in Earth orbit and beyond. This work describes the operation and activities of current Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC) ground stations in Germany and Australasia. In Germany, FSOC facilities are located at the Oberpfaffenhofen campus of the Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center, DLR), the Laser-Bodenstation in Trauen (Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center, DLR), and the Research Center Space of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich in Neubiberg. The DLR also operates a ground station in Almeria, Spain as part of the European Optical Nucleus Network. The Australasian Optical Ground Station Network (AOGSN) is a proposed network of 0.5 -- 0.7m class optical telescopes located across Australia and New Zealand. The development and progress for each node of the AOGSN is reported, along with optimisation of future site locations based on cloud cover analysis.

Initialisation protocol for efficient quantum memories using resolved hyperfine structure

We describe a quantum memory spectral preparation strategy that maximises memory efficiency and bandwidth in materials such as 167 Er3+:Y2SiO5 in a high field regime, where the hyperfine structure is resolved. We demonstrate the method in 167 Er3+:Y2SiO5 by preparing spectrally isolated 18 dB-absorbing features on a < 1 dB background. Using these features we create an atomic frequency comb and show quantum storage of 200 ns pulses with 22% efficiency, limited by the background absorption which arises from laser instability. We describe the experimental improvements needed to reach the material limits: O(1) s spin state storage, O(100) MHz bandwidth, and > 90% efficiency.

High resolution spectroscopy of individual erbium ions in strong magnetic fields

In this paper we use electrically detected optical excitation spectroscopy of individual erbium ions in silicon to determine their optical and paramagnetic properties simultaneously. We demonstrate that this high spectral resolution technique can be exploited to observe interactions typically unresolvable in silicon using conventional spectroscopy techniques due to inhomogeneous broadening. In particular, we resolve the Zeeman splitting of the 4I15/2 ground and 4I13/2 excited state separately and in strong magnetic fields we observe the anti-crossings between Zeeman components of different crystal field levels. We discuss the use of this electronic detection technique in identifying the symmetry and structure of erbium sites in silicon.
