Quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory description of molecules in optical cavities

A quantum electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory framework is applied to describe strongly coupled light--matter interactions in cavity environments. The formalism utilizes a tensor product approach, coupling real-space electronic wave functions with Fock space photonic states. Various molecular systems serve as test cases to examine how coupling parameters and cavity frequencies affect molecular geometry, polaritonic spectra, and intermolecular binding.

Exploring Photoproduction with the GlueX Experiment

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab (Newport News, VA USA) is designed to explore the spectrum of mesons up to about 3 GeV. We present results on the production of light-quark resonances with linearly polarized photons. These results enhance our understanding of photoproduction mechanisms, which is valuable in subsequent searches for exotic hybrid mesons. Measurements of the J/psi photoproduction cross section at threshold are also presented.

Attaining human-level performance with atlas location autocontext for anatomical landmark detection in 3D CT data

We present an efficient neural network method for locating anatomical landmarks in 3D medical CT scans, using atlas location autocontext in order to learn long-range spatial context. Location predictions are made by regression to Gaussian heatmaps, one heatmap per landmark. This system allows patchwise application of a shallow network, thus enabling multiple volumetric heatmaps to be predicted concurrently without prohibitive GPU memory requirements. Further, the system allows inter-landmark spatial relationships to be exploited using a simple overdetermined affine mapping that is robust to detection failures and occlusion or partial views. Evaluation is performed for 22 landmarks defined on a range of structures in head CT scans. Models are trained and validated on 201 scans. Over the final test set of 20 scans which was independently annotated by 2 human annotators, the neural network reaches an accuracy which matches the annotator variability, with similar human and machine patterns of variability across landmark classes.

Construction and Performance of the Barrel Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the GlueX Experiment

The barrel calorimeter is part of the new spectrometer installed in Hall D at Jefferson Lab for the GlueX experiment. The calorimeter was installed in 2013, commissioned in 2014 and has been operating routinely since early 2015. The detector configuration, associated Monte Carlo simulations, calibration and operational performance are described herein. The calorimeter records the time and energy deposited by charged and neutral particles created by a multi-GeV photon beam. It is constructed as a lead and scintillating-fiber calorimeter and read out with 3840 large-area silicon photomultiplier arrays. Particles impinge on the detector over a wide range of angles, from normal incidence at 90 degrees down to 11.5 degrees, which defines a geometry that is fairly unique among calorimeters. The response of the calorimeter has been measured during a running experiment and performs as expected for electromagnetic showers below 2.5 GeV. We characterize the performance of the BCAL using the energy resolution integrated over typical angular distributions for $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ production of $\sigma_E/E$=5.2\%/$\sqrt{E(\rm{GeV})} \oplus$ 3.6\% and a timing resolution of $\sigma$\,=\,150\,ps at 1\,GeV.

The GlueX DIRC Project

The GlueX experiment was designed to search for and study the pattern of gluonic excitations in the meson spectrum produced through photoproduction reactions at a new tagged photon beam facility in Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory. The particle identification capabilities of the GlueX experiment will be enhanced by constructing a DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) detector, utilizing components of the decommissioned BaBar DIRC. The DIRC will allow systematic studies of kaon final states that are essential for inferring the quark flavor content of both hybrid and conventional mesons. The design for the GlueX DIRC is presented, including the new expansion volumes that are currently under development.

Amplitudes for the analysis of the decay $J/\psi \to K^{+} K^{-} \pi^0$

We construct an analytical model for two channel, two-body scattering amplitudes, and then apply it in the description of the three-body $J/\psi \to K^+K^-\pi^0$ decay. In the construction of the partial wave amplitudes, we combine the low energy resonance region with the Regge asymptotic behavior determined from direct two-body production. We find that resonance production in the $K\pi$ channel in $J/\psi$ decays seems to differ from that observed in direct $K\pi$ production, while the mass distribution in the $K\bar K$ channel may be compatible.
