SDE-based Monte Carlo dose calculation for proton therapy validated against Geant4

Objective: To assess the accuracy and computational performance of a stochastic differential equation (SDE)--based model for proton beam dose calculation by benchmarking against Geant4 in simplified phantom geometries. Approach: Building on Crossley et al. (2025), we implemented the SDE model using standard approximations to interaction cross sections and mean excitation energies, enabling straightforward adaptation to new materials and configurations. The model was benchmarked against Geant4 in homogeneous, longitudinally heterogeneous and laterally heterogeneous phantoms to assess depth--dose behaviour, lateral transport and material heterogeneities. Main results: Across all phantoms and beam energies, the SDE model reproduced the main depth--dose characteristics predicted by Geant4, with proton range agreement within 0.2 mm for 100 MeV beams and 0.6 mm for 150 MeV beams. Voxel--wise comparisons yielded gamma pass rates exceeding 95% under 2%/0.5 mm criteria with a 1% dose threshold. Differences were localised to steep dose gradients or material interfaces, while overall lateral beam dispersion was well reproduced. The SDE model achieved speed-up factors of about 2.5--3 relative to single-threaded Geant4. Significance: The SDE approach reproduces key dosimetric features with good accuracy at lower computational cost and is amenable to parallel and GPU implementations, supporting fast proton therapy dose calculations.

Fast Tracking of 6D Particle Phase Space Using the FC2CT Algorithm for rf Cavities

In this paper, a fast cell to cell tracking algorithm (FC2CT) is developed, that determines the change in 6D phase space of a particle beam through rf accelerating cavities operated in both Standing and Traveling Wave modes. The performance is compared to well trusted tracking codes - ASTRA and RF-Track - for proton beams with relativistic beta = 0.5. The FC2CT algorithm produces a complete analytical method to determine the change in particle momentum, with the constant particle velocity approximation over the integration region. Additional developments for FC2CT are discussed, such as altering the integration length. FC2CT can be used as a fast method class in common tracking codes to perform fast simulations through rf cavities.

Beam Dynamics Framework Incorporating Acceleration to Define the Minimum Aperture in Two Focusing Schemes for Proton Radiotherapy Linac

In this paper, a self-consistent transverse beam dynamics framework is demonstrated, that incorporates acceleration into the transverse beam dynamics studies for a proton linac machine. Two focusing schemes are developed and discussed; the FODO-like scheme, and the minimum aperture scheme. The FODO-like scheme is a simple scheme, requiring only one quadrupole per cavity. The scheme is analytically solved to minimise the beam size at the cavity entrance/exit and ensures a constant beam size along the lattice, with respect to adiabatic damping due to longitudinally accelerating rf cavities. The minimum aperture scheme describes the regime that matches the beam ellipse to the acceptance ellipse of a cavity, allowing for the smallest possible aperture, for a given cavity length. A simple approximation of an rf cavity map is determined to allow changes in particle energy along a lattice, and acceleration is assumed only in the longitudinal direction.
