More concordance homomorphisms from knot Floer homology

We define an infinite family of linearly independent, integer-valued smooth concordance homomorphisms. Our homomorphisms are explicitly computable and rely on local equivalence classes of knot Floer complexes over the ring $\mathbb{F}[U, V]/(UV=0)$. We compare our invariants to other concordance homomorphisms coming from knot Floer homology, and discuss applications to topologically slice knots, concordance genus, and concordance unknotting number.

Linear independence of rationally slice knots

A knot in $S^3$ is rationally slice if it bounds a disk in a rational homology ball. We give an infinite family of rationally slice knots that are linearly independent in the knot concordance group. In particular, our examples are all infinite order. All previously known examples of rationally slice knots were order two.

A note on PL-disks and rationally slice knots

We give infinitely many examples of manifold-knot pairs (Y, J) such that Y bounds an integer homology ball, J does not bound a non-locally-flat PL-disk in any integer homology ball, but J does bound a smoothly embedded disk in a rational homology ball. The proof relies on formal properties of involutive Heegaard Floer homology.

An odd Khovanov homotopy type

For each link L in S^3 and every quantum grading j, we construct a stable homotopy type X^j_o(L) whose cohomology recovers Ozsvath-Rasmussen-Szabo's odd Khovanov homology, H_i(X^j_o(L)) = Kh^{i,j}_o(L), following a construction of Lawson-Lipshitz-Sarkar of the even Khovanov stable homotopy type. Furthermore, the odd Khovanov homotopy type carries a Z/2 action whose fixed point set is a desuspension of the even Khovanov homotopy type. We also construct a Z/2 action on an even Khovanov homotopy type, with fixed point set a desuspension of X^j_o(L).

An infinite-rank summand of the homology cobordism group

We show that the three-dimensional homology cobordism group admits an infinite-rank summand. It was previously known that the homology cobordism group contains a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-subgroup and a $\mathbb{Z}$-summand. Our proof proceeds by introducing an algebraic variant of the involutive Heegaard Floer package of Hendricks-Manolescu and Hendricks-Manolescu-Zemke. This is inspired by an analogous argument in the setting of knot concordance due to the second author.

On homology cobordism and local equivalence between plumbed manifolds

We establish a structural understanding of the involutive Heegaard Floer homology for all linear combinations of almost-rational (AR) plumbed three-manifolds. We use this to show that the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant is a homology cobordism invariant for all linear combinations of AR plumbed homology spheres. As a corollary, we prove that if $Y$ is a linear combination of AR plumbed homology spheres with $μ(Y) = 1$, then $Y$ is not torsion in the homology cobordism group. A general computation of the involutive Heegaard Floer correction terms for these spaces is also included.

On Newstead's Mayer-Vietoris argument in characteristic 2

Consider the moduli space of framed flat $U(2)$ connections with fixed odd determinant over a surface. Newstead combined some fundamental facts about this moduli space with the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to compute its betti numbers over any field not of characteristic two. We adapt his method in characteristic two to produce conjectural recursive formulae for the mod two betti numbers of the framed moduli space which we partially verify. We also discuss the interplay with the mod two cohomology ring structure of the unframed moduli space.

The cohomology of rank two stable bundle moduli: mod two nilpotency & skew Schur polynomials

We compute cup product pairings in the integral cohomology ring of the moduli space of rank two stable bundles with odd determinant over a Riemann surface using methods of Zagier. The resulting formula is related to a generating function for certain skew Schur polynomials. As an application, we compute the nilpotency degree of a distinguished degree two generator in the mod two cohomology ring. We then give descriptions of the mod two cohomology rings in low genus, and describe the subrings invariant under the mapping class group action.

Stern Sequences for a Family of Multidimensional Continued Fractions: TRIP-Stern Sequences

The Stern diatomic sequence is closely linked to continued fractions via the Gauss map on the unit interval, which in turn can be understood via systematic subdivisions of the unit interval. Higher dimensional analogues of continued fractions, called multidimensional continued fractions, can be produced through various subdivisions of a triangle. We define triangle partition-Stern sequences (TRIP-Stern sequences for short), higher-dimensional generalizations of the Stern diatomic sequence, from the method of subdividing a triangle via various triangle partition algorithms. We then explore several combinatorial results about TRIP-Stern sequences, which may be used to give rise to certain well-known sequences. We finish by generalizing TRIP-Stern sequences and presenting analogous results for these generalizations.

Two-fold quasi-alternating links, Khovanov homology and instanton homology

We introduce a class of links strictly containing quasi-alternating links for which mod 2 reduced Khovanov homology is always thin. We compute the framed instanton homology for double branched covers of such links. Aligning certain dotted markings on a link with bundle data over the branched cover, we also provide many computations of framed instanton homology in the presence of a non-trivial real 3-plane bundle. We discuss evidence for a spectral sequence from the twisted Khovanov homology of a link with mod 2 coefficients to the framed instanton homology of the double branched cover. We also discuss the relevant mod 4 gradings.

Klein-four connections and the Casson invariant for non-trivial admissible $U(2)$ bundles

Given a rank 2 hermitian bundle over a 3-manifold that is non-trivial admissible in the sense of Floer, one defines its Casson invariant as half the signed count of its projectively flat connections, suitably perturbed. We show that the 2-divisibility of this integer invariant is controlled in part by a formula involving the mod 2 cohomology ring of the 3-manifold. This formula counts flat connections on the induced adjoint bundle with Klein-four holonomy.

A Remark on $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Floer homology

In this remark, we show how the monopole Frøyshov invariant, as well as the analogues of the Involutive Heegaard Floer correction terms $\underline{d},\overline{d}$, are related to the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Floer homology $\mathit{SWFH}^G_*$. We show that the only interesting correction terms of a $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-space are those coming from the subgroups $\mathbb{Z}/4$, $S^1$, and $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$ itself.

Manolescu Invariants of Connected Sums

We give inequalities for the Manolescu invariants $α,β,γ$ under the connected sum operation. We compute the Manolescu invariants of connected sums of some Seifert fiber spaces. Using these same invariants, we provide a proof of Furuta's Theorem, the existence of a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$ subgroup of the homology cobordism group. To our knowledge, this is the first proof of Furuta's Theorem using monopoles. We also provide information about Manolescu invariants of the connected sum of $n$ copies of a three-manifold $Y$, for large $n$.

Pin(2)-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology of Seifert fibrations

We compute the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology of Seifert rational homology three-spheres in terms of their Heegaard Floer homology. As a result of this computation, we prove Manolescu's conjecture that $β=-\barμ$ for Seifert integral homology three-spheres. We show that the Manolescu invariants $α, β,$ and $γ$ give new obstructions to homology cobordisms between Seifert fiber spaces, and that many Seifert homology spheres $Σ(a_1,...,a_n)$ are not homology cobordant to any $-Σ(b_1,...,b_n)$. We then use the same invariants to give an example of an integral homology sphere not homology cobordant to any Seifert fiber space. We also show that the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer spectrum provides homology cobordism obstructions distinct from $α,β,$ and $γ$. In particular, we identify an $\mathbb{F}[U]$-module called connected Seiberg-Witten Floer homology, whose isomorphism class is a homology cobordism invariant.

Cubic Irrationals and Periodicity via a Family of Multi-dimensional Continued Fraction Algorithms

We construct a countable family of multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithms, built out of five specific multidimensional continued fractions, and find a wide class of cubic irrational real numbers a so that either (a, a^2) or (a, a-a^2) is purely periodic with respect to an element in the family. These cubic irrationals seem to be quite natural, as we show that, for every cubic number field, there exists a pair (u,u') with u a unit in the cubic number field (or possibly the quadratic extension of the cubic number field by the square root of the discriminant) such that (u,u') has a periodic multidimensional continued fraction expansion under one of the maps in the family generated by the initial five maps. Thus these results are built on a careful technical analysis of certain units in cubic number fields and our family of multi-dimensional continued fractions. We then recast the linking of cubic irrationals with periodicity to the linking of cubic irrationals with the construction of a matrix with nonnegative integer entries for which at least one row is eventually periodic.

A Solution to the Lonely Runner Conjecture for Almost All Points

The Lonely Runner Conjecture is a number theory problem, dating to 1964. Using dynamical systems theory, we show almost all sets of velocities solve the conjecture. Furthermore, any "traditional" approach of Diophantine approximation cannot solve the problem, and we offer a short list of reformulations of the problem.
