B Meson Semileptonic Form Factors from Unquenched Lattice QCD

The semileptonic process, B --> πl ν, is studied via full QCD Lattice simulations. We use unquenched gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. These include the effect of vacuum polarization from three quark flavors: the $s$ quark and two very light flavors ($u/d$) of variable mass allowing extrapolations to the physical chiral limit. We employ Nonrelativistic QCD to simulate the $b$ quark and a highly improved staggered quark action for the light sea and valence quarks. We calculate the form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ in the chiral limit for the range 16 GeV$^2 \leq q^2 < q^2_{max}$ and obtain $\int^{q^2_{max}}_{16 GeV^2} [dΓ/dq^2] dq^2 / |v_{ub}|^2 = 1.46(35) ps^{-1}$. Combining this with a preliminary average by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG'05) of recent branching fraction data for exclusive B semileptonic decays from the BaBar, Belle and CLEO collaborations, leads to $|V_{ub}| = 4.22(30)(51) \times 10^{-3}$. PLEASE NOTE APPENDIX B with an ERRATUM, to appear in Physical Review D, to the published version of this e-print (Phys.Rev.D 73, 074502 (2006)). Results for the form factor $f_+(q^2)$ in the chiral limit have changed significantly. The last two sentences in this abstract should now read; "We calculate the form factor $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ in the chiral limit for the range 16 Gev$^2 \leq q^2 < q^2_{max}$ and obtain $\int^{q^2_{max}}_{16 GeV^2} [dΓ/dq^2] dq^2 / |V_{ub}|^2 = 2.07(57)ps^{-1}$. Combining this with a preliminary average by the Heavy Flavor Averagibg Group (HFAG'05) of recent branching fraction data for exclusive B semileptonic decays from the BaBar, Belle and CLEO collaborations, leads to $|V_{ub}| = 3.55(25)(50) \times 10^{-3}$."

Field theoretic study of a cold Fermi gas in the unitary limit

Trapped and cooled gases of alkali atoms can be manipulated to exhibit a variety of interesting phenomena. For example, dilute gases of fermionic atoms, in 2 hyperfine states, can be cooled to temperatures where they become superfluid. An external field can be applied to tune the scattering length a. When |a| exceeds the interparticle spacing, nonperturbative tools are needed to study the system theoretically. The unitary limit, |a|\to\infty, is particularly interesting due to its universality and symmetry. Lattice field theory and effective field theory can be used to systematically calculate properties of this system. Results are presented for the finite temperature phase transition and for behavior near zero temperature.

B Physics on the Lattice: Present and Future

Recent experimental measurements and lattice QCD calculations are now reaching the precision (and accuracy) needed to over-constrain the CKM parameters $\barρ$ and $\barη$. In this brief review, I discuss the current status of lattice QCD calculations needed to connect the experimental measurements of $B$ meson properties to quark flavor-changing parameters. Special attention is given to $B\toπ\ellν$, which is becoming a competitive way to determine $|V_{ub}|$, and to $B^0-\bar{B^0}$ mixings, which now include reliable extrapolation to the physical light quark mass. The combination of the recent measurement of the $B_s$ mass difference and current lattice calculations dramatically reduces the uncertainty in $|V_{td}|$. I present an outlook for reducing dominant lattice QCD uncertainties entering CKM fits, and I remark on lattice calculations for other decay channels.

B semileptonic decays with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors

We study semileptonic B decays, using MILC dynamical configurations with $N_f=2+1$. NRQCD heavy and AsqTad light quark actions are used. We obtain the semileptonic form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ in the chiral limit.

The B Meson Decay Constant from Unquenched Lattice QCD

We present determinations of the B meson decay constant f_B and of the ratio f_{B_s}/f_B using the MILC collaboration unquenched gauge configurations which include three flavors of light sea quarks. The mass of one of the sea quarks is kept around the strange quark mass, and we explore a range in masses for the two lighter sea quarks down to m_s/8. The heavy b quark is simulated using Nonrelativistic QCD, and both the valence and sea light quarks are represented by the highly improved (AsqTad) staggered quark action. The good chiral properties of the latter action allow for a much smoother chiral extrapolation to physical up and down quarks than has been possible in the past. We find f_B = 216(9)(19)(4) (6) MeV and f_{B_s} /f_B = 1.20(3)(1).

Critical temperature for fermion pairing using lattice field theory

Dilute gases of 2-component fermions are of great interest in atomic and nuclear physics. When interactions are strong enough so that a bound state is at threshold, universal behavior is expected. Lattice field theory provides a first principles approach to the study of strongly interacting systems such as this through Monte Carlo simulation. Results of exploratory simulations are presented here. In particular, the finite temperature phase transition between superfluid and normal states is studied. We present first results for the critical temperature T_c and describe the future work necessary to determine T_c as a function of interaction strength.

Status of Lattice Flavor Physics

This talk reviews recent lattice QCD calculations relevant for quark flavor physics. Since lattice results must be accurate and precise to play a definitive role in phenomenology, the focus is on unquenched results of quantities which can be calculated most reliably.

B Decays on the Lattice and Results for Phenomenology

Lattice Monte Carlo simulations now include the effects of 2 light sea quarks and 1 strange sea quark through the use of an improved staggered fermion action. Consequently, results important to phenomenology are free of the approximate 10% errors inherent in the quenched approximation. This talk reports on calculations of the B and Bs decay constants and B -> pi l nu form factors. Accurate determinations of these quantities will lead to tighter constraints on CKM matrix elements.

Matching of the Heavy-Light Currents with NRQCD Heavy and Improved Naive Light Quarks

One-loop matching of heavy-light currents is carried out for a highly improved lattice action, including the effects of mixings with dimension 4 O(1/M) and O(a) operators. We use the NRQCD action for heavy quarks, the Asqtad improved naive action for light quarks, and the Symanzik improved glue action. These results are being used in recent heavy meson decay constant and semileptonic form factor calculations on the MILC dynamical configurations.

Exploring Lattice Methods for Cold Fermionic Atoms

There has been a surge of experimental effort recently in cooling trapped fermionic atoms to quantum degeneracy. By varying an external magnetic field, interactions between atoms can be made arbitrarily strong. When the S wave scattering length becomes comparable to and larger than the interparticle spacing, standard mean field analysis breaks down. In this case the system exhibits a type of universality, and J-W. Chen and D. B. Kaplan recently showed how this system can be studied from first principles using lattice field theory. This poster presents the first results of exploratory simulations. The existence of a continuum limit is checked and the pairing condensate is studied as a function of the external source strength over a range of temperatures. Preliminary results show simulations can locate the critical temperature.

Lattice QCD and Flavor Physics

Now that lattice QCD simulations are able to include effects of light sea quarks, the prospects are good for constraining quark flavor phenomenology. This review talk for particle physics experimentalists begins with an introduction intended to describe broadly the steps of lattice Monte Carlo simulations. The remainder of the talk is a brief survey of recent and ongoing calculations relevant for quark flavor physics.

One-Loop Matching of the Heavy-Light A_0 and V_0 Currents with NRQCD Heavy and Improved Naive Light Quarks

One-loop matching of heavy-light currents is carried out for a highly improved lattice action, including the effects of dimension 4 O(1/M) and O(a) operators. We use the NRQCD action for heavy quarks, the Asqtad improved naive action for light quarks, and the Symanzik improved glue action. As part of the matching procedure we also present results for the NRQCD self energy and for massless Asqtad quark wavefunction renormalization with improved glue.

The B_s and D_s decay constants in 3 flavor lattice QCD

Capitalizing on recent advances in lattice QCD, we present a calculation of the leptonic decay constants f_{B_s} and f_{D_s} that includes effects of one strange sea quark and two light sea quarks. The discretization errors of improved staggered fermion actions are small enough to simulate with 3 dynamical flavors on lattices with spacings around 0.1 fm using present computer resources. By shedding the quenched approximation and the associated lattice scale ambiguity, lattice QCD greatly increases its predictive power. NRQCD is used to simulate heavy quarks with masses between 1.5 m_c and m_b. We arrive at the following results: f_{B_s} = 260 \pm 7 \pm 26 \pm 8 \pm 5 MeV and f_{D_s} = 290 \pm 20 \pm 29 \pm 29 \pm 6 MeV. The first quoted error is the statistical uncertainty, and the rest estimate the sizes of higher order terms neglected in this calculation. All of these uncertainties are systematically improvable by including another order in the weak coupling expansion, the nonrelativistic expansion, or the Symanzik improvement program.

Progress Calculating Decay Constants with NRQCD and AsqTad Actions

We combine a light AsqTad antiquark with a nonrelativistic heavy quark to compute the decay constants of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons using the ensemble of 3-flavor gauge field configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. Preliminary results for $f_{B_s}$ and $f_{D_s}$ are given and status of the chiral extrapolation to $f_B$ is reported. We also touch upon results of the perturbative calculation which matches matrix elements in the effective theory to the full theory at 1-loop order.

Heavy-light mesons with staggered light quarks

We demonstrate the viability of improved staggered light quarks in studies of heavy-light systems. Our method for constructing heavy-light operators exploits the close relation between naive and staggered fermions. The new approach is tested on quenched configurations using several staggered actionsn combined with nonrelativistic heavy quarks. The B_s meson kinetic mass, the hyperfine and 1P-1S splittings in B_s, and the decay constant f_{B_s} are calculated and compared to previous quenched lattice studies. An important technical detail, Bayesian curve-fitting, is discussed at length.

B_s Mesons using Staggered Light Quarks

Last year we proposed using staggered fermions as the light quarks, combined with nonrelativistic heavy quarks, in simulations of heavy-light mesons. A first round of tests which focuses on the B_s meson has been completed using quenched lattices, and results are presented here for the kinetic B_s mass, the B_s^* - B_s splitting, and f_{B_s}. The next project, already underway, is to compute the B and B_s decay constants and spectra on the n_f = 2+1 and 3 MILC lattices. We report on progress with one set of these configurations.

Heavy-light physics using NRQCD-staggered actions

One leading source of uncertainty in the lattice computation of semi-leptonic form factors in B decay, and to a lesser extent B meson decay constants, comes from the extrapolation of the light quark mass to the physical up/down mass. This talk presents first explorations of simulating the light quark with staggered fermion actions, which are free of the spurious zero modes that effect Wilson-like Dirac operators and are less costly. Methods for fitting to Euclidean-time NRQCD-staggered meson propagators are discussed, and some preliminary spectrum results are presented.

Deconfinement transition and string tensions in SU(4) Yang-Mills Theory

We present results from numerical lattice calculations of SU(4) Yang-Mills theory. This work has two goals: to determine the order of the finite temperature deconfinement transition on an $N_t = 6$ lattice and to study the string tensions between static charges in the irreducible representations of SU(4). Motivated by Pisarski and Tytgat's argument that a second-order SU($\infty$) deconfinement transition would explain some features of the SU(3) and QCD transitions, we confirm older results on a coarser, $N_t = 4$, lattice. We see a clear two-phase coexistence signal, characteristic of a first-order transition, at $8/g^2 = 10.79$ on a $6\times 20^3$ lattice, on which we also compute a latent heat of $Δε\approx 0.6 ε_{SB}$. Computing Polyakov loop correlation functions we calculate the string tension at finite temperature in the confined phase between fundamental charges, $σ_1$, between diquark charges, $σ_2$, and between adjoint charges $σ_4$. We find that $1 < σ_2/σ_1 < 2$, and our result for the adjoint string tension $σ_4$ is consistent with string breaking.
