Dimension in the realm of transseries

Let $\mathbb T$ be the differential field of transseries. We establish some basic properties of the dimension of a definable subset of ${\mathbb T}^n$, also in relation to its codimension in the ambient space ${\mathbb T}^n$. The case of dimension $0$ is of special interest, and can be characterized both in topological terms (discreteness) and in terms of the Herwig-Hrushovski-Macpherson notion of co-analyzability. The proofs use results by the authors from "Asymptotic Differential Algebra and Model Theory of Transseries", the axiomatic framework for "dimension" in [L. van den Dries, "Dimension of definable sets, algebraic boundedness and Henselian fields", Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 45 (1989), no. 2, 189-209], and facts about co-analyzability from [B. Herwig, E. Hrushovski, D. Macpherson, "Interpretable groups, stably embedded sets, and Vaughtian pairs", J. London Math. Soc. (2003) 68, no. 1, 1-11].

The logical complexity of finitely generated commutative rings

We characterize those finitely generated commutative rings which are (parametrically) bi-interpretable with arithmetic: a finitely generated commutative ring $A$ is bi-interpretable with $(\mathbb N,{+},{\times})$ if and only if the space of non-maximal prime ideals of $A$ is nonempty and connected in the Zariski topology and the nilradical of $A$ has a nontrivial annihilator in $\mathbb Z$. Notably, by constructing a nontrivial derivation on a nonstandard model of arithmetic we show that the ring of dual numbers over $\mathbb Z$ is not bi-interpretable with $\mathbb N$.

The surreal numbers as a universal H-field

We show that the natural embedding of the differential field of transseries into Conway's field of surreal numbers with the Berarducci-Mantova derivation is an elementary embedding. We also prove that any Hardy field embeds into the field of surreals with the Berarducci-Mantova derivation.

Julia's equation and differential transcendence

We show that the iterative logarithm of each non-linear entire function is differentially transcendental over the ring of entire functions, and we give a sufficient criterion for such an iterative logarithm to be differentially transcendental over the ring of convergent power series.

Decision problems for 3-manifolds and their fundamental groups

We survey the status of some decision problems for 3-manifolds and their fundamental groups. This includes the classical decision problems for finitely presented groups (Word Problem, Conjugacy Problem, Isomorphism Problem), and also the Homeomorphism Problem for 3-manifolds and the Membership Problem for 3-manifold groups.

3-manifold groups

We summarize properties of 3-manifold groups, with a particular focus on the consequences of the recent results of Ian Agol, Jeremy Kahn, Vladimir Markovic and Dani Wise.

Towards a Model Theory for Transseries

The differential field of transseries extends the field of real Laurent series, and occurs in various context: asymptotic expansions, analytic vector fields, o-minimal structures, to name a few. We give an overview of the algebraic and model-theoretic aspects of this differential field, and report on our efforts to understand its first-order theory.

Transseries and Todorov-Vernaeve's asymptotic fields

We study the relationship between fields of transseries and residue fields of convex subrings of non-standard extensions of the real numbers. This was motivated by a question of Todorov and Vernaeve, answered in this paper.

3-manifold groups are virtually residually p

Given a prime $p$, a group is called residually $p$ if the intersection of its $p$-power index normal subgroups is trivial. A group is called virtually residually $p$ if it has a finite index subgroup which is residually $p$. It is well-known that finitely generated linear groups over fields of characteristic zero are virtually residually $p$ for all but finitely many $p$. In particular, fundamental groups of hyperbolic 3-manifolds are virtually residually $p$. It is also well-known that fundamental groups of 3-manifolds are residually finite. In this paper we prove a common generalization of these results: every 3-manifold group is virtually residually $p$ for all but finitely many $p$. This gives evidence for the conjecture (Thurston) that fundamental groups of 3-manifolds are linear groups.

Definable versions of theorems by Kirszbraun and Helly

Kirszbraun's Theorem states that every Lipschitz map $S\to\mathbb R^n$, where $S\subseteq \mathbb R^m$, has an extension to a Lipschitz map $\mathbb R^m \to \mathbb R^n$ with the same Lipschitz constant. Its proof relies on Helly's Theorem: every family of compact subsets of $\mathbb R^n$, having the property that each of its subfamilies consisting of at most $n+1$ sets share a common point, has a non-empty intersection. We prove versions of these theorems valid for definable maps and sets in arbitrary definably complete expansions of ordered fields.

Residual properties of graph manifold groups

Let $f\colon M\to N$ be a continuous map between closed irreducible graph manifolds with infinite fundamental group. Perron and Shalen showed that if $f$ induces a homology equivalence on all finite covers, then $f$ is in fact homotopic to a homeomorphism. Their proof used the statement that every graph manifold is finitely covered by a $3$-manifold whose fundamental group is residually $p$ for every prime $p$. We will show that this statement regarding graph manifold groups is not true in general, but we will show how to modify the argument of Perron and Shalen to recover their main result. As a by-product we will determine all semidirect products $\Z \ltimes \Z^d$ which are residually $p$ for every prime $p$.

Degree Bounds for Gröbner Bases in Algebras of Solvable Type

We establish doubly-exponential degree bounds for Gröbner bases in certain algebras of solvable type over a field (as introduced by Kandri-Rody and Weispfenning). The class of algebras considered here includes commutative polynomial rings, Weyl algebras, and universal enveloping algebras of finite-dimensional Lie algebras. For the computation of these bounds, we adapt a method due to Dubé based on a generalization of Stanley decompositions. Our bounds yield doubly-exponential degree bounds for ideal membership and syzygies, generalizing the classical results of Hermann and Seidenberg (in the commutative case) and Grigoriev (in the case of Weyl algebras).

An Algorithm for Finding Symmetric Gröbner Bases in Infinite Dimensional Rings

A \textit{symmetric ideal} $I \subseteq R = K[x_1,x_2,...]$ is an ideal that is invariant under the natural action of the infinite symmetric group. We give an explicit algorithm to find Gröbner bases for symmetric ideals in the infinite dimensional polynomial ring $R$. This allows for symbolic computation in a new class of rings. In particular, we solve the ideal membership problem for symmetric ideals of $R$.

Finite generation of symmetric ideals

Let $A$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, and let $R = A[X]$ be the polynomial ring in an infinite collection $X$ of indeterminates over $A$. Let ${\mathfrak S}_{X}$ be the group of permutations of $X$. The group ${\mathfrak S}_{X}$ acts on $R$ in a natural way, and this in turn gives $R$ the structure of a left module over the left group ring $R[{\mathfrak S}_{X}]$. We prove that all ideals of $R$ invariant under the action of ${\mathfrak S}_{X}$ are finitely generated as $R[{\mathfrak S}_{X}]$-modules. The proof involves introducing a certain well-quasi-ordering on monomials and developing a theory of Gröbner bases and reduction in this setting. We also consider the concept of an invariant chain of ideals for finite-dimensional polynomial rings and relate it to the finite generation result mentioned above. Finally, a motivating question from chemistry is presented, with the above framework providing a suitable context in which to study it.

Finiteness theorems in stochastic integer programming

We study Graver test sets for families of linear multi-stage stochastic integer programs with varying number of scenarios. We show that these test sets can be decomposed into finitely many ``building blocks'', independent of the number of scenarios, and we give an effective procedure to compute these building blocks. The paper includes an introduction to Nash-Williams' theory of better-quasi-orderings, which is used to show termination of our algorithm. We also apply this theory to finiteness results for Hilbert functions.

Lefschetz extensions, tight closure, and big Cohen-Macaulay algebras

We associate to every equicharacteristic zero Noetherian local ring $R$ a faithfully flat ring extension which is an ultraproduct of rings of various prime characteristics, in a weakly functorial way. Since such ultraproducts carry naturally a non-standard Frobenius, we can define a new tight closure operation on $R$ by mimicking the positive characteristic functional definition of tight closure. This approach avoids the use of generalized Néron Desingularization and only relies on Rotthaus' result on Artin Approximation in characteristic zero. If $R$ is moreover equidimensional and universally catenary, then we can also associate to it in a canonical, weakly functorial way a balanced big Cohen-Macaulay algebra.
