Robin counting functions on cuboids in the critical scaling regime

We consider eigenvalue counting functions of Robin Laplace operators on cuboids where the Robin parameter and the spectral cut-off $\lambda$ are coupled. Our main focus is the critical regime, in which the Robin parameter is proportional to $\sqrt{\lambda}$. We obtain a two-term asymptotic expansion for the counting functions in this coupled setting. In the critical regime, the second term in the asymptotic expansion depends non-trivially on the proportionality constant and interpolates continuously between the corresponding second terms for the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians. Outside the critical regime, one recovers the corresponding Dirichlet or Neumann asymptotics. We also establish a P\'olya-type inequality for the counting function whenever the ratio of the Robin parameter and $\sqrt{\lambda}$ exceeds a dimension-dependent threshold.

Optimizing Riesz means of Robin Laplace operators on cuboids in a semiclassical limit

We study asymptotic shape optimization for Riesz means of Robin Laplacian eigenvalues among cuboids of fixed measure. Our focus is the regime where the Robin parameter is proportional to the square root of the spectral parameter defining the Riesz means. Here, a transition emerges based on the precise ratio between the two parameters: as the spectral parameter tends to infinity, sequences of maximizers shift from converging to the unit cube to lacking convergent subsequences entirely. Key tools include two-term spectral asymptotics and uniform inequalities for the Riesz means. Notably, the transition point governing the behavior of optimizers may differ from the point at which the second asymptotic term changes sign. This shows that heuristics based solely on asymptotics for a fixed domain fail to accurately predict the asymptotic behavior of maximizers.

Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum type estimates for the Pauli and magnetic Schr\"odinger operator in dimension two

We prove a Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum type inequality for the number of negative eigenvalues of Pauli operators in dimension two. The resulting upper bound is sharp both in the weak as well as in the strong coupling limit. We also derive different upper bounds for magnetic Schr\"odinger operators. The nature of the two estimates depends on whether or not the spin-orbit coupling is taken into account.

Optimizing the ground state energy of the three-dimensional magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field

This paper concerns the shape optimization problem of minimizing the ground state energy of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field among three-dimensional domains of fixed volume. In contrast to the two-dimensional case, a generalized ``magnetic'' Faber-Krahn inequality does not hold and the minimizers are not expected to be balls when the magnetic field is turned on. An analysis of the problem among cylindrical domains reveals geometric constraints for general minimizers. In particular, minimizers must elongate with a certain rate along the direction of the magnetic field as the field strength increases. In addition to the theoretical analysis, we present numerical minimizers which confirm this prediction and give rise to further conjectures.

Numerical Optimization of Eigenvalues of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field

We present numerical minimizers for the first seven eigenvalues of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field in a wide range of field strengths. Adapting an approach by Antunes and Freitas, we use gradient descent for the minimization procedure together with the Method of Fundamental solutions for eigenvalue computation. Remarkably, we observe that when the magnetic flux exceeds the index of the target eigenvalue, the minimizer is always a disk.

Weak coupling asymptotics for the Pauli operator in two dimensions

We compute asymptotic expansions for the negative eigenvalues of the Pauli operator in two dimensions perturbed by a weakly coupled potential with definite sign. Whereas previous results were limited to the case of radial magnetic fields and potentials, we are able to drop the assumption of radial symmetry entirely.

Eigenvalues of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field on disks in the strong field limit

We consider the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field on domains of finite measure. First, in the case of a disk, we prove that the eigenvalue branches with respect to the field strength behave asymptotically linear with an exponentially small remainder term as the field strength goes to infinity. We compute the asymptotic expression for this remainder term. Second, we show that for sufficiently large magnetic field strengths, the spectral bound corresponding to the P\'olya conjecture for the non-magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian is violated up to a sharp excess factor which is independent of the domain.

Machine Learning Inter-Atomic Potentials Generation Driven by Active Learning: A Case Study for Amorphous and Liquid Hafnium dioxide

We propose a novel active learning scheme for automatically sampling a minimum number of uncorrelated configurations for fitting the Gaussian Approximation Potential (GAP). Our active learning scheme consists of an unsupervised machine learning (ML) scheme coupled to Bayesian optimization technique that evaluates the GAP model. We apply this scheme to a Hafnium dioxide (HfO2) dataset generated from a melt-quench ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) protocol. Our results show that the active learning scheme, with no prior knowledge of the dataset is able to extract a configuration that reaches the required energy fit tolerance. Further, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations performed using this active learned GAP model on 6144-atom systems of amorphous and liquid state elucidate the structural properties of HfO2 with near ab initio precision and quench rates (i.e. 1.0 K/ps) not accessible via AIMD. The melt and amorphous x-ray structural factors generated from our simulation are in good agreement with experiment. Additionally, the calculated diffusion constants are in good agreement with previous ab initio studies.

Implementation of a Toffoli Gate with Superconducting Circuits

The quantum Toffoli gate allows universal reversible classical computation. It is also an important primitive in many quantum circuits and quantum error correction schemes. Here we demonstrate the realization of a Toffoli gate with three superconducting transmon qubits coupled to a microwave resonator. By exploiting the third energy level of the transmon qubit, the number of elementary gates needed for the implementation of the Toffoli gate, as well as the total gate time can be reduced significantly in comparison to theoretical proposals using two-level systems only. We characterize the performance of the gate by full process tomography and Monte Carlo process certification. The gate fidelity is found to be $68.5\pm0.5$%.

Demonstrating W-type Entanglement of Dicke-States in Resonant Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

Nonlinearity and entanglement are two important properties by which physical systems can be identified as non-classical. We study the dynamics of the resonant interaction of up to N=3 two-level systems and a single mode of the electromagnetic field sharing a single excitation dynamically. We observe coherent vacuum Rabi oscillations and their nonlinear speed up by tracking the populations of all qubits and the resonator in time. We use quantum state tomography to show explicitly that the dynamics generates maximally entangled states of the W class in a time limited only by the collective interaction rate. We use an entanglement witness and the threetangle to characterize the state whose fidelity F=78% is limited in our experiments by crosstalk arising during the simultaneous qubit manipulations which is absent in a sequential approach with F=91%.
