Modified conformal extensions

We present a geometric construction and characterization of $2n$-dimensional split-signature conformal structures endowed with a twistor spinor with integrable kernel. The construction is regarded as a modification of the conformal Patterson--Walker metric construction for $n$-dimensional projective manifolds. The characterization is presented in terms of the twistor spinor and an integrability condition on the conformal Weyl curvature. We further derive complete description of Einstein metrics and infinitesimal conformal symmetries in terms of suitable projective data. Finally, we obtain an explicit geometrically constructed Fefferman--Graham ambient metric and show vanishing of $Q$-curvature.

Conformal Patterson-Walker metrics

The classical Patterson-Walker construction of a split-signature (pseudo-)Riemannian structure from a given torsion-free affine connection is generalized to a construction of a split-signature conformal structure from a given projective class of connections. A characterization of the induced structures is obtained. We achieve a complete description of Einstein metrics in the conformal class formed by the Patterson-Walker metric. Finally, we describe all symmetries of the conformal Patterson-Walker metric. In both cases we obtain descriptions in terms of geometric data on the original structure.

Parabolic Compactification of Homogeneous Spaces

In this article, we study compactifications of homogeneous spaces coming from equivariant, open embeddings into a generalized flag manifold $G/P$. The key to this approach is that in each case $G/P$ is the homogeneous model for a parabolic geometry; the theory of such geometries provides a large supply of geometric tools and invariant differential operators that can be used for this study. A classical theorem of J.~Wolf shows that any involutive automorphism of a semisimple Lie group $G$ with fixed point group $H$ gives rise to a large family of such compactifications of homogeneous spaces of $H$. Most examples of (classical) Riemannian symmetric spaces as well as many non--symmetric examples arise in this way. A specific feature of the approach is that any compactification of that type comes with the notion of "curved analog" to which the tools we develop also apply. The model example of this is a general Poincaré--Einstein manifold forming the curved analog of the conformal compactification of hyperbolic space. In the first part of the article, we derive general tools for the analysis of such compactifications. In the second part, we analyze two families of examples in detail, which in particular contain compactifications of the symmetric spaces $SL(n,\Bbb R)/SO(p,n-p)$ and $SO(n,\Bbb C)/SO(n)$. We describe the decomposition of the compactification into orbits, show how orbit closures can be described as the zero sets of smooth solutions to certain invariant differential operators and prove a local slice theorem around each orbit in these examples.

A Projective-to-Conformal Fefferman-Type Construction

We study a Fefferman-type construction based on the inclusion of Lie groups ${\rm SL}(n+1)$ into ${\rm Spin}(n+1,n+1)$. The construction associates a split-signature $(n,n)$-conformal spin structure to a projective structure of dimension $n$. We prove the existence of a canonical pure twistor spinor and a light-like conformal Killing field on the constructed conformal space. We obtain a complete characterisation of the constructed conformal spaces in terms of these solutions to overdetermined equations and an integrability condition on the Weyl curvature. The Fefferman-type construction presented here can be understood as an alternative approach to study a conformal version of classical Patterson-Walker metrics as discussed in recent works by Dunajski-Tod and by the authors. The present work therefore gives a complete exposition of conformal Patterson-Walker metrics from the viewpoint of parabolic geometry.

Fefferman-Graham ambient metrics of Patterson-Walker metrics

Given an $n$-dimensional manifold $N$ with an affine connection $D$, we show that the associated Patterson-Walker metric $g$ on $T^*N$ admits a global and explicit Fefferman-Graham ambient metric. This provides a new and large class of conformal structures which are generically not conformally Einstein but for which the ambient metric exists to all orders and can be realized in a natural and explicit way. In particular, it follows that Patterson-Walker metrics have vanishing Fefferman-Graham obstruction tensors. As an application of the concrete ambient metric realization we show in addition that Patterson-Walker metrics have vanishing Q-curvature.

Conformal Holonomy Equals Ambient Holonomy

This paper studies the relation between two notions of holonomy on a conformal manifold. The first is the conformal holonomy, defined to be the holonomy of the normal tractor connection. The second is the holonomy of the Fefferman-Graham ambient metric of the conformal manifold. It is shown that the infinitesimal conformal holonomy and the infinitesimal ambient holonomy always agree up to the order that the ambient metric is defined.

Holonomy reductions of Cartan geometries and curved orbit decompositions

We develop a holonomy reduction procedure for general Cartan geometries. We show that, given a reduction of holonomy, the underlying manifold naturally decomposes into a disjoint union of initial submanifolds. Each such submanifold corresponds to an orbit of the holonomy group on the modelling homogeneous space and carries a canonical induced Cartan geometry. The result can therefore be understood as a `curved orbit decomposition'. The theory is then applied to the study of several invariant overdetermined differential equations in projective, conformal and CR-geometry. This makes use of an equivalent description of solutions to these equations as parallel sections of a tractor bundle. In projective geometry we study a third order differential equation that governs the existence of a compatible Einstein metric. In CR-geometry we discuss an invariant equation that governs the existence of a compatible Kähler-Einstein metric.

A non-normal Fefferman-type construction of split-signature conformal structures admitting twistor spinors

We treat a non-normal Fefferman-type construction based on an inclusion $\SL(n+1)\embed\Spin(n+1,n+1)$. The construction associates a split signature $(n,n)$-conformal spin structure to a projective structure of dimension $n$. For $n\geq 3$ the induced conformal Cartan connection is shown to be normal if and only if it is flat. The main technical work of this article consists in showing that in the non-flat case the normalised conformal Cartan connection still allows a parallel (pure) spin-tractor and thus a corresponding (pure) twistor spinor on the conformal space. The Fefferman-type construction presented here is an alternative approach to study a construction of Dunajski-Tod

Homogeneous Cartan Geometries

We describe invariant principal and Cartan connections on homogeneous principal bundles and show how to calculate the curvature and the holonomy; in the case of an invariant Cartan connection we give a formula for the infinitesimal automorphisms. The main result of this paper is that the above calculations are purely algorithmic. As an example of an homogeneous parabolic geometry we treat a conformal structure on the product of two spheres.

Invariant prolongation of overdetermined PDE's in projective, conformal and Grassmannian geometry

This is the second in a series of papers on natural modification of the normal tractor connection in a parabolic geometry, which naturally prolongs an underlying overdetermined system of invariant differential equations. We give a short review of the general procedure developed in [5] and then compute the prolongation covariant derivatives for a number of interesting examples in projective, conformal and Grassmannian geometries.

Coupling solutions of BGG-equations in conformal spin geometry

BGG-equations are geometric overdetermined systems of PDEs on parabolic geometries. Normal solutions of BGG-equations are particularly interesting and we give a simple formula for the necessary and sufficient additional integrability conditions on a solution. We then discuss a procedure for coupling known solutions of BGG-equations to produce new ones. Employing a suitable calculus for conformal spin structures this yields explicit coupling formulas and conditions between almost Einstein scales, conformal Killing forms and twistor spinors. Finally we discuss a class of generic twistor spinors that provides an invariant decomposition of conformal Killing fields.

The twistor spinors of generic 2- and 3-distributions

Generic distributions on 5- and 6-manifolds give rise to conformal structures that were discovered by P. Nurowski resp. R. Bryant. We describe both as Fefferman-type constructions and show that for orientable distributions one obtains conformal spin structures. The resulting conformal spin geometries are then characterized by their conformal holonomy and equivalently by the existence of a twistor spinor which satisfies a genericity condition. Moreover, we show that given such a twistor spinor we can decompose a conformal Killing field of the structure. We obtain explicit formulas relating conformal Killing fields, almost Einstein structures and twistor spinors.

On a new normalization for tractor covariant derivatives

A regular normal parabolic geometry of type $G/P$ on a manifold $M$ gives rise to sequences $D_i$ of invariant differential operators, known as the curved version of the BGG resolution. These sequences are constructed from the normal covariant derivative $\na^\om$ on the corresponding tractor bundle $V,$ where $\om$ is the normal Cartan connection. The first operator $D_0$ in the sequence is overdetermined and it is well known that $\na^\om$ yields the prolongation of this operator in the homogeneous case $M = G/P$. Our first main result is the curved version of such a prolongation. This requires a new normalization $\tilde{\na}$ of the tractor covariant derivative on $V$. Moreover, we obtain an analogue for higher operators $D_i$. In that case one needs to modify the exterior covariant derivative $d^{\na^\om}$ by differential terms. Finally we demonstrate these results on simple examples in projective and Grassmannian geometry. Our approach is based on standard techniques of the BGG machinery.

Conformal Structures Associated to Generic Rank 2 Distributions on 5-Manifolds - Characterization and Killing-Field Decomposition

Given a maximally non-integrable 2-distribution ${\mathcal D}$ on a 5-manifold $M$, it was discovered by P. Nurowski that one can naturally associate a conformal structure $[g]_{\mathcal D}$ of signature (2,3) on $M$. We show that those conformal structures $[g]_{\mathcal D}$ which come about by this construction are characterized by the existence of a normal conformal Killing 2-form which is locally decomposable and satisfies a genericity condition. We further show that every conformal Killing field of $[g]_{\mathcal D}$ can be decomposed into a symmetry of ${\mathcal D}$ and an almost Einstein scale of $[g]_{\mathcal D}$.

Invariant Prolongation of BGG-Operators in Conformal Geometry

BGG-operators form sequences of invariant differential operators and the first of these is overdetermined. Interesting equations in conformal geometry described by these operators are those for Einstein scales, conformal Killing forms and conformal Killing tensors. We present a deformation procedure of the tractor connection which yields an invariant prolongation of the first operator. The explicit calculation is presented in the case of conformal Killing forms.
