A note on eigenvalue bounds for non-compact manifolds

In this article we prove upper bounds for the Laplace eigenvalues $λ_k$ below the essential spectrum for strictly negatively curved Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. Our bound is given in terms of $k^2$ and specific geometric data of the manifold. This applies also to the particular case of non-compact manifolds whose sectional curvature tends to $-\infty$, where no essential spectrum is present due to a theorem of Donnelly/Li. The result stands in clear contrast to Laplacians on graphs where such a bound fails to be true in general.

Enhanced ion-cavity coupling through cavity cooling in the strong coupling regime

Incorporating optical cavities in ion traps is becoming increasingly important in the development of photonic quantum networks. However, the presence of the cavity can hamper efficient laser cooling of ions because of geometric constraints that the cavity imposes and an unfavourable Purcell effect that can modify the cooling dynamics substantially. On the other hand the coupling of the ion to the cavity can also be exploited to provide a mechanism to efficiently cool the ion. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally how cavity cooling can be implemented to improve the localisation of the ion and thus its coupling to the cavity. By using cavity cooling we obtain an enhanced ion-cavity coupling of $2π\times (16.7\pm 0.1)$ MHz, compared with $2π\times (15.2\pm 0.1)$ MHz when using only Doppler cooling.

An Improved Discrete $ p $-Hardy Inequality

We improve the classical discrete Hardy inequality for $ 1<p<\infty $ for functions on the natural numbers. For integer values of $ p $ the Hardy weight is an absolutely monotonic function.

From Hardy to Rellich inequalities on graphs

We show how to deduce Rellich inequalities from Hardy inequalities on infinite graphs. Specifically, the obtained Rellich inequality gives an upper bound on a function by the Laplacian of the function in terms of weighted norms. These weights involve the Hardy weight and a function which satisfies an eikonal inequality. The results are proven first for Laplacians and are extended to Schrödinger operators afterwards.

Riesz Decompositions for Schrödinger Operators on Graphs

We study superharmonic functions for Schrödinger operators on general weighted graphs. Specifically, we prove two decompositions which both go under the name Riesz decomposition in the literature. The first one decomposes a superharmonic function into a harmonic and a potential part. The second one decomposes a superharmonic function into a sum of superharmonic functions with certain upper bounds given by prescribed superharmonic functions. As application we show a Brelot type theorem.

On the uniqueness class, stochastic completeness and volume growth for graphs

In this note we prove an optimal volume growth condition for stochastic completeness of graphs under very mild assumptions. This is realized by proving a uniqueness class criterion for the heat equation which is an analogue to a corresponding result of Grigor'yan on manifolds. This uniqueness class criterion is shown to hold for graphs that we call globally local, i.e., graphs where we control the jump size far outside. The transfer from general graphs to globally local graphs is then carried out via so called refinements.

Strong coupling of a single ion to an optical cavity

Strong coupling between an atom and an electromagnetic resonator is an important condition in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). While strong coupling in various physical systems has been achieved so far, it remained elusive for single atomic ions. In this paper we demonstrate for the first time the coupling of a single ion to an optical cavity with a coupling strength exceeding both atomic and cavity decay rates. We use cavity assisted Raman spectroscopy to precisely characterize the ion-cavity coupling strength and observe a spectrum featuring the normal mode splitting in the cavity transmission due to the ion-cavity interaction. Our work paves the way towards new applications of cavity QED utilizing single trapped ions in the strong coupling regime for quantum optics and quantum technologies.

A discrete Hopf-Rinow-theorem

We prove a version of the Hopf-Rinow-theorem with respect to path metrics on discrete spaces. The novel aspect is that we do not a priori assume local finiteness but isolate a local finiteness type condition, called essential local finiteness, that is indeed necessary. As a side product we identify the maximal weight, called the geodesic weight, which generates the path metric in the situation when the space is complete with respect to any of the equivalent notions of completeness proven in the Hopf-Rinow theorem. As an application, we characterize the graphs for which the resistance metric is a path metric induced by the graph structure.

Sobolev-Type Inequalities and Eigenvalue Growth on Graphs with Finite Measure

In this note we study the eigenvalue growth of infinite graphs with discrete spectrum. We assume that the corresponding Dirichlet forms satisfy certain Sobolev-type inequalities and that the total measure is finite. In this sense, the associated operators on these graphs display similarities to elliptic operators on bounded domains in the continuum. Specifically, we prove lower bounds on the eigenvalue growth and show by examples that corresponding upper bounds can not be established.

Scattering the geometry of weighted graphs

Given two weighted graphs $(X,b_k,m_k)$, $k=1,2$ with $b_1\sim b_2$ and $m_1\sim m_2$, we prove a weighted $L^1$-criterion for the existence and completeness of the wave operators $ W_{\pm}(H_{2},H_1, I_{1,2})$, where $H_k$ denotes the natural Laplacian in $\ell^2(X,m_k)$ w.r.t. $(X,b_k,m_k)$ and $I_{1,2}$ the trivial identification of $\ell^2(X,m_1)$ with $\ell^2(X,m_2)$. In particular, this entails a very general criterion for the absolutely continuous spectra of $H_1$ and $H_2$ to be equal.

Courant's Nodal Domain Theorem for Positivity Preserving Forms

We introduce a notion of nodal domains for positivity preserving forms. This notion generalizes the classical ones for Laplacians on domains and on graphs. We prove the Courant nodal domain theorem in this generalized setting using purely analytical methods.

Precise positioning of an ion in an integrated Paul trap-cavity system using radiofrequency signals

We report a novel miniature Paul ion trap design with an integrated optical fibre cavity which can serve as a building block for a fibre-linked quantum network. In such cavity quantum electrodynamic set-ups, the optimal coupling of the ions to the cavity mode is of vital importance and this is achieved by moving the ion relative to the cavity mode. The trap presented herein features an endcap-style design complemented with extra electrodes on which additional radiofrequency voltages are applied to fully control the pseudopotential minimum in three dimensions. This method lifts the need to use three-dimensional translation stages for moving the fibre cavity with respect to the ion and achieves high integrability, mechanical rigidity and scalability. Not based on modifying the capacitive load of the trap, this method leads to precise control of the pseudopotential minimum allowing the ion to be moved with precisions limited only by the ion's position spread. We demonstrate this by coupling the ion to the fibre cavity and probing the cavity mode profile.

Long-distance single photon transmission from a trapped ion via quantum frequency conversion

Trapped atomic ions are ideal single photon emitters with long lived internal states which can be entangled with emitted photons. Coupling the ion to an optical cavity enables efficient emission of single photons into a single spatial mode and grants control over their temporal shape. These features are key for quantum information processing and quantum communication. However, the photons emitted by these systems are unsuitable for long-distance transmission due to their wavelengths. Here we report the transmission of single photons from a single $^{40}\text{Ca}^{+}$ ion coupled to an optical cavity over a 10 km optical fibre via frequency conversion from 866 nm to the telecom C-band at 1,530 nm. We observe non-classical photon statistics of the direct cavity emission, the converted photons and the 10 km transmitted photons, as well as the preservation of the photons' temporal shape throughout. This telecommunication ready system can be a key component for long-distance quantum communication as well as future cloud quantum computation.

Magnetic sparseness and Schrödinger operators on graphs

We study magnetic Schrödinger operators on graphs. We extend the notion of sparseness of graphs by including a magnetic quantity called the frustration index. This notion of magnetic sparse turn out to be equivalent to the fact that the form domain is an $\ell^{2}$ space. As a consequence, we get criteria of discreteness for the spectrum and eigenvalue asymptotics.

Feynman path integrals for magnetic Schrödinger operators on infinite weighted graphs

We prove a Feynman path integral formula for the unitary group $ \exp(-itL_{v,θ})$, $t\geq 0$, associated with a discrete magnetic Schrödinger operator $L_{v,θ}$ on a large class of weighted infinite graphs. As a consequence, we get a new Kato-Simon estimate $$ |\exp(-itL_{v,θ})(x,y)|\leq \exp(-tL_{-\mathrm{deg},0})(x,y), $$ which controls the unitary group uniformly in the potentials in terms of a Schrödinger semigroup, where the potential $\mathrm{deg}$ is the weighted degree function of the graph.

Optimal Hardy inequalities for Schrödinger operators on graphs

For a given subcritical discrete Schrödinger operator $H$ on a weighted infinite graph $X$, we construct a Hardy-weight $w$ which is optimal in the following sense. The operator $H - λw$ is subcritical in $X$ for all $λ< 1$, null-critical in $X$ for $λ= 1$, and supercritical near any neighborhood of infinity in $X$ for any $λ> 1$. Our results rely on a criticality theory for Schrödinger operators on general weighted graphs.
