Large-scale geometry obstructs localization

We explain the coarse geometric origin of the fact that certain spectral subspaces of topological insulator Hamiltonians are delocalized, in the sense that they cannot admit an orthonormal basis of localized wavefunctions, with respect to any uniformly discrete set of localization centers. This is a robust result requiring neither spatial homogeneity nor symmetries, and applies to Landau levels of disordered quantum Hall systems on general Riemannian manifolds.

The insidious bicategory of algebra bundles

In this paper we construct a bicategory of (super) algebra bundles over a smooth manifold, where the 1-morphisms are bundles of bimodules. The main point is that naive definitions of bimodule bundles will not lead to a well-defined composition law in such a bicategory, at least not if non-invertible bimodules and non-semisimple algebras are desired. This problem has not been addressed so far in the literature. We develop a complete solution, and also address symmetric monoidal structures as well as the corresponding questions of dualizability.

Cobordism invariance of topological edge-following states

We prove that a spectral gap-filling phenomenon occurs whenever a Hamiltonian operator encounters a coarse index obstruction upon compression to a domain with boundary. Furthermore, the gap-filling spectra contribute to quantised current channels, which follow and are localised at the possibly complicated boundary. This index obstruction is shown to be insensitive to deformations of the domain boundary, so the phenomenon is generic for magnetic Laplacians modelling quantum Hall systems and Chern topological insulators. A key construction is a quasi-equivariant version of Roe's algebra of locally compact finite propagation operators.

A Framework for Geometric Field Theories and their Classification in Dimension One

In this paper, we develop a general framework of geometric functorial field theories, meaning that all bordisms in question are endowed with geometric structures. We take particular care to establish a notion of smooth variation of such geometric structures, so that it makes sense to require the output of our field theory to depend smoothly on the input. We then test our framework on the case of $1$-dimensional field theories (with or without orientation) over a manifold $M$. Here the expectation is that such a field theory is equivalent to the data of a vector bundle over $M$ with connection and, in the nonoriented case, the additional data of a nondegenerate bilinear pairing; we prove that this is indeed the case in our framework.

The Fermionic integral on loop space and the Pfaffian line bundle

As the loop space of a Riemannian manifold is infinite-dimensional, it is a non-trivial problem to make sense of the "top degree component" of a differential form on it. In this paper, we show that a formula from finite dimensions generalizes to assign a sensible "top degree component" to certain composite forms, obtained by wedging with the exponential (in the exterior algebra) of the canonical 2-form on the loop space. The result is a section on the Pfaffian line bundle on the loop space. We then identify this with a section of the line bundle obtained by transgression of the spin lifting gerbe. These results are a crucial ingredient for defining the fermionic part of the supersymmetric path integral on the loop space.

A Rigorous Construction of the Supersymmetric Path Integral Associated to a Compact Spin Manifold

We give a rigorous construction of the path integral in N=1/2 supersymmetry as an integral map for differential forms on the loop space of a compact spin manifold. It is defined on the space of differential forms which can be represented by extended iterated integrals in the sense of Chen and Getzler-Jones-Petrack. Via the iterated integral map, we compare our path integral to the non-commutative loop space Chern character of Güneysu and the second author. Our theory provides a rigorous background to various formal proofs of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem using supersymmetric path integrals, as investigated by Alvarez-Gaumé, Atiyah, Bismut and Witten.

The Chern Character of θ-summable Fredholm Modules over dg Algebras and Localization on Loop Space

We introduce the notion of a {\vartheta}-summable Fredholm module over a locally convex dg algebra Ω and construct its Chern character as a cocycle on the entire cyclic complex of Ω, extending the construction of Jaffe, Lesniewski and Osterwalder to a differential graded setting. Using this Chern character, we prove an index theorem involving an abstract version of a Bismut-Chern character constructed by Getzler, Jones and Petrack in the context of loop spaces. Our theory leads to a rigorous construction of the path integral for N=1/2 supersymmetry which satisfies a Duistermaat-Heckman type localization formula on loop space.

Gaplessness of Landau Hamiltonians on hyperbolic half-planes via coarse geometry

We use coarse index methods to prove that the Landau Hamiltonian on the hyperbolic half-plane, and even on much more general imperfect half-spaces, has no spectral gaps. Thus the edge states of hyperbolic quantum Hall Hamiltonians completely fill up the gaps between Landau levels, just like those of the Euclidean counterpart.

Good Wannier bases in Hilbert modules associated to topological insulators

For a large class of physically relevant operators on a manifold with discrete group action, we prove general results on the (non-)existence of a basis of smooth well-localised Wannier functions for their spectral subspaces. This turns out to be equivalent to the freeness of a certain Hilbert module over the group $C^*$-algebra canonically associated to the spectral subspace. This brings into play $K$-theoretic methods and justifies their importance as invariants of topological insulators in physics.

Heat Kernels as Path Integrals

In this survey article, we review the relation between heat kernels and path integrals. In particular, we review recent results on the approximation of the Wiener measure on compact manifold by measures on (finite-dimensional) spaces of piece-wise geodesics.

Heat Kernel Asymptotics, Path Integrals and Infinite-Dimensional Determinants

We investigate the short-time expansion of the heat kernel of a Laplace type operator on a compact Riemannian manifold and show that the lowest order term of this expansion is given by the Fredholm determinant of the Hessian of the energy functional on a space of finite energy paths. This is the asymptotic behavior to be expected from formally expressing the heat kernel as a path integral and then (again formally) using Laplace's method on the integral. We also relate this to the zeta determinant of the Jacobi operator, which is another way to assign a determinant to the Hessian of the energy functional. We consider both the near-diagonal asymptotics as well as the behavior at the cut locus.

Strong Short Time Asymptotics and Convolution Approximation of the Heat Kernel

We give a short proof of a strong version of the short time asymptotic expansion of heat kernels associated to Laplace type operators acting on sections of vector bundles over compact Riemannian manifolds, including exponential decay of the difference of the approximate heat kernel and the true heat kernel. We use this to show that repeated convolution of the approximate heat kernels can be used to approximate the heat kernel on all of $M$, which is related to expressing the heat kernel as a path integral. This scheme is then applied to obtain a short-time asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel at the cut locus.

The Trace and the Mass of subcritical GJMS Operators

Let $L_g$ be the subcritical GJMS operator on an even-dimensional compact manifold $(X, g)$ and consider the zeta-regularized trace $\mathrm{Tr}_ζ(L_g^{-1})$ of its inverse. We show that if $\ker L_g = 0$, then the supremum of this quantity, taken over all metrics $g$ of fixed volume in the conformal class, is always greater than or equal to the corresponding quantity on the standard sphere. Moreover, we show that in the case that it is strictly larger, the supremum is attained by a metric of constant mass. Using positive mass theorems, we give some geometric conditions for this to happen.

Asymptotic Expansions and Conformal Covariance of the Mass of Conformal Differential Operators

We give an explicit description of the full asymptotic expansion of the Schwartz kernel of the complex powers of $m$-Laplace type operators $L$ on compact Riemannian manifolds in terms of Riesz distributions. The constant term in this asymptotic expansion turns turns out to be given by the local zeta function of $L$. In particular, the constant term in the asymptotic expansion of the Green's function $L^{-1}$ is often called the mass of $L$, which (in case that $L$ is the Yamabe operator) is an important invariant, namely a positive multiple of the ADM mass of a certain asymptotically flat manifold constructed out of the given data. We show that for general conformally invariant $m$-Laplace operators $L$ (including the GJMS operators), this mass is a conformal invariant in the case that the dimension of $M$ is odd and that $\ker L = 0$, and we give a precise description of the failure of the conformal invariance in the case that these conditions are not satisfied.

Path Integrals on Manifolds with Boundary

We give time-slicing path integral formulas for solutions to the heat equation corresponding to a self-adjoint Laplace type operator acting on sections of a vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. More specifically, we show that such a solution can be approximated by integrals over finite-dimensional path spaces of piecewise geodesics subordinated to increasingly fine partitions of the time interval. We consider a subclass of mixed boundary conditions which includes standard Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.

Asymptotic eigenfunctions for Schrödinger operators on a vector bundle

In the limit $\hbar\to 0$, we analyze a class of Schrödinger operators $H_\hbar = \hbar^2 L + \hbar W + V\cdot \mathrm{id}$ acting on sections of a vector bundle $\mathcal{Eh}$ over a Riemannian manifold $M$ where $L$ is a Laplace type operator, $W$ is an endomorphism field and the potential energy $V$ has a non-degenerate minimum at some point $p\in M$. We construct quasimodes of WKB-type near $p$ for eigenfunctions associated with the low lying eigenvalues of $H_\hbar$. These are obtained from eigenfunctions of the associated harmonic oscillator $H_{p, \hbar}$ at $p$, acting on smooth functions on the tangent space.
