The antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the ${\text{C}}_{60}$ fullerene geometry

We solve the quantum-mechanical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with spins positioned on vertices of the truncated icosahedron using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). This describes magnetic properties of the undoped C$_{60}$ fullerene at half filling in the limit of strong on-site interaction $U$. We calculate the ground state and correlation functions for all possible distances, the lowest singlet and triplet excited states, as well as thermodynamic properties, namely the specific heat and spin susceptibility. We find that unlike smaller C$_{20}$ or C$_{32}$ that are solvable by exact diagonalization, the lowest excited state is a triplet rather than a singlet, indicating a reduced frustration due to the presence of many hexagon faces and the separation of the pentagonal faces, similar to what is found for the truncated tetrahedron. This implies that frustration may be tuneable within the fullerenes by changing their size. The spin-spin correlations are much stronger along the hexagon bonds and exponentially decrease with distance, so that the molecule is large enough not to be correlated across its whole extent. The specific heat shows a high-temperature peak and a low-temperature shoulder reminiscent of the kagome lattice, while the spin susceptibility shows a single broad peak and is very close to the one of C$_{20}$.

Matrix-product state approach to the generalized nuclear pairing Hamiltonian

We show that from the point of view of the generalized pairing Hamiltonian, the atomic nucleus is a system with small entanglement and can thus be described efficiently using a 1D tensor network (matrix-product state) despite the presence of long-range interactions. The ground state can be obtained using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, which is accurate up to machine precision even for large nuclei, is numerically as cheap as the widely used BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) approach, and does not suffer from any mean-field artifacts. We apply this framework to compute the even-odd mass differences of all known lead isotopes from $^{178}$Pb to $^{220}$Pb in a very large configuration space of 13 shells between the neutron magic numbers 82 and 184 (i.e., two major shells) and find good agreement with the experiment. We also treat pairing with non-zero angular momentum and determine the lowest excited states in the full configuration space of one major shell, which we demonstrate for the $N=126$, $Z\geq 82$ isotones. To demonstrate the capabilities of the method beyond low-lying excitations, we calculate the first 100 excited states of $^{208}$Pb with singlet pairing and the two-neutron removal spectral function of $^{210}$Pb, which relates to a two-neutron pickup experiment.

Itinerant magnetism in the triangular lattice Hubbard model at half-doping: Application to twisted transition-metal dichalcogenides

We use unrestricted Hartree-Fock, density matrix renormalization group, and variational projected entangled pair state calculations to investigate the ground state phase diagram of the triangular lattice Hubbard model at "half doping" relative to single occupancy, i.e. at a filling of $(1\pm \frac{1}{2})$ electrons per site. The electron-doped case has a nested Fermi surface in the non-interacting limit, and hence a weak-coupling instability towards density-wave orders whose wavevectors are determined by Fermi surface nesting conditions. We find that at moderate to strong interaction strengths other spatially-modulated orders arise, with wavevectors distinct from the nesting vectors. In particular, we identify a series closely-competing itinerant long-wavelength magnetically ordered states, yielding to uniform ferromagnetic order at the largest interaction strengths. For half-hole doping and a similar range of interaction strengths, our data indicate that magnetic orders are most likely absent.

Quantum spin spiral ground state of the ferrimagnetic sawtooth chain

The ferrimagnetic phase of the sawtooth chain with mixed ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interactions $J$ and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interactions $J'$ (within the isotropic Heisenberg model) was previously characterized as a phase with commensurate order. In this paper, we demonstrate that the system in fact exhibits an incommensurate quantum spin spiral. Even though the ground state is translationally invariant in terms of the local spin expectations $\avg{\vec{S}_i}$, the spiral can be detected via the connected spin-spin correlations $\avg{\vec{S}_i\cdot\vec{S}_j}-\avg{\vec{S}_i}\cdot\avg{\vec{S}_j}$ between the apical spins. It has a long wavelength that grows with $J'$ and that soon exceeds finite-system sizes typically employed in numerical simulations. A faithful treatment thus requires the use of state-of-the-art simulations for large, periodic systems. In this work, we are able to accurately treat up to $L=400$ sites (200 unit cells) with periodic boundary conditions using the density-matrix renormaliztion group (DMRG). Exploiting the SU(2) symmetry allows us to directly compute the lowest-energy state for a given total spin. Our results are corroborated by variational uniform matrix product state (VUMPS) calculations, which work directly in the thermodynamic limit at the cost of a lower accuracy.

Competing States in the Two-Dimensional Frustrated Kondo-Necklace Model

The interplay between Kondo screening, indirect magnetic interaction and geometrical frustration is studied in the two-dimensional Kondo-necklace model on the triangular lattice. Using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS), we compute the ground state as a function of the antiferromagnetic local Kondo interaction $J_K$ and the Ising-type direct spin-spin interaction $I_z$ . As opposed to previous studies, we do not find partial Kondo screening (PKS) in the isotropic limit $I_z = 0$ but the same behavior as in the unfrustrated case, i.e. a direct phase transition between the paradigmatic phases of the Doniach competition: (i) a disordered phase consisting of local spin-singlets at strong $J_K$ and (ii) a magnetically ordered phase at weak $J_K$ . For $I_z > 0$, we find a PKS ground state but again in opposite to previous studies, we find that the PKS ground state is in strong competition with a second ground state candidate not found before. This state is characterized by a strongly polarized central spin in each hexagon and its anti-parallel, weakly polarized (i.e. partially screened) neighbors. We name it central spin (CS) phase.

Magnetic properties of a capped kagome molecule with 60 quantum spins

We compute ground-state properties of the isotropic, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the sodalite cage geometry. This is a 60-spin spherical molecule with 24 vertex-sharing tetrahedra which can be regarded as a molecular analogue of a capped kagome lattice and which has been synthesized with high-spin rare-earth atoms. Here, we focus on the $S=1/2$ case where quantum effects are strongest. We employ the SU(2)-symmetric density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We find a threefold degenerate ground state that breaks the spatial symmetry and that splits up the molecule into three large parts which are almost decoupled from each other. This stands in sharp contrast to the behaviour of most known spherical molecules. On a methodological level, the disconnection leads to "glassy dynamics" within the DMRG that cannot be targeted via standard techniques. In the presence of finite magnetic fields, we find broad magnetization plateaus at 4/5, 3/5, and 1/5 of the saturation, which one can understand in terms of localized magnons, singlets, and doublets which are again nearly decoupled from each other. At the saturation field, the zero-point entropy is $S=\ln(182)\approx 5.2$ in units of the Boltzmann constant.

Topological phases arising from attractive interaction and pair hopping in the Extended Hubbard Model

The extended Hubbard model with an attractive density-density interaction, positive pair hopping, or both, is shown to host topological phases, with a doubly degenerate entanglement spectrum and interacting edge spins. This constitutes a novel instance of topological order which emerges from interactions. When the interaction terms combine in a charge-SU(2) symmetric fashion, a novel partially polarized pseudospin phase appears, in which the topological features of the spin degrees of freedom coexist with long-range $η$-wave superconductivity. Thus, our system provides an example of an interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking and symmetry-protected topological order that leads to novel and unexpected properties.

Phase diagram of the Kondo model on the zigzag ladder

The effect of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t_{2}$ on the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice is studied with density-matrix renormalization-group techniques and by comparing with the phase diagram of the classical-spin variant of the same model. For a finite $t_{2}$, i.e., for a zigzag-ladder geometry, indirect antiferromagnetic interactions between the localized spins are geometrically frustrated. We demonstrate that $t_{2}$ at the same time triggers several magnetic phases which are absent in the model with nearest-neighbor hopping only. For strong $J$, we find a transition from antiferromagnetic to incommensurate magnetic short-range order, which can be understood entirely in the classical-spin picture. For weaker $J$, a spin-dimerized phase emerges, which spontaneously breaks the discrete translation symmetry. The phase is not accessible to perturbative means but is explained, on a qualitative level, by the classical-spin model as well. Spin dimerization alleviates magnetic frustration and is interpreted as a key to understand the emergence of quasi-long-range spiral magnetic order which is found at weaker couplings. The phase diagram at weak $J$, with gapless quasi-long-range order on top of the two-fold degenerate spin-dimerized ground state, competing with a nondegenerate phase with gapped spin (and charge) excitations, is unconventional and eludes an effective low-energy spin-only theory.

Frustrated quantum magnetism in the Kondo lattice on the zigzag ladder

The interplay between Kondo effect, indirect magnetic interaction and geometrical frustration is studied in the Kondo lattice on the one-dimensional zigzag ladder. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), the ground state and various short- and long-range spin- and density-correlation functions are calculated for the model at half-filling as a function of the antiferromagnetic Kondo interaction down to $J=0.3t$ where $t$ is the nearest-neighbor hopping on the zigzag ladder. Geometrical frustration is shown to lead to at least two critical points: Starting from the strong-$J$ limit, where almost local Kondo screening dominates and where the system is a nonmagnetic Kondo insulator, antiferromagnetic correlations between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor local spins become stronger and stronger, until at $J^{\rm dim}_{\rm c} \approx 0.89t$ frustration is alleviated by a spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry and a corresponding transition to a dimerized state. This is characterized by antiferromagnetic correlations along the legs and by alternating antiferro- and ferromagnetic correlations on the rungs of the ladder. A mechanism of partial Kondo screening that has been suggested for the Kondo lattice on the two-dimensional triangular lattice is not realized in the one-dimensional case. Furthermore, within the symmetry-broken dimerized state, there is a magnetic transition to a $90^{\circ}$ quantum spin spiral with quasi-long-range order at $J^{\rm mag}_{\rm c} \approx 0.84t$. The quantum-critical point is characterized by a closure of the spin gap (with decreasing $J$) and a divergence of the spin-correlation length and of the spin-structure factor $S(q)$ at wave vector $q=π/2$. This is opposed to the model on the one-dimensional bipartite chain, which is known to have a finite spin gap for all $J>0$ at half-filling.
