Obstructions and lines of marginal stability from the world-sheet

The behaviour of supersymmetric D-branes under deformations of the closed string background is studied using world-sheet methods. We explain how lines of marginal stability and obstructions arise from this point of view. We also show why N=2 B-type branes may be obstructed against (cc) perturbations, but why such obstructions do not occur for N=4 superconformal branes at c=6, i.e. for half-supersymmetric D-branes on K3. Our analysis is based on a field theory approach in superspace, as well as on techniques from perturbed conformal field theory.

Conformal perturbation theory beyond the leading order

Higher order conformal perturbation theory is studied for theories with and without boundaries. We identify systematically the universal quantities in the beta function equations, and we give explicit formulae for the universal coefficients at next-to-leading order in terms of integrated correlation functions. As an example, we analyse the radius-dependence of the conformal dimension of some boundary operators for the case of a single Neumann brane on a circle, and for an intersecting brane configuration on a torus, reproducing in both cases the expected geometrical answer.

Extremal N=(2,2) 2D Conformal Field Theories and Constraints of Modularity

We explore the constraints on the spectrum of primary fields implied by modularity of the elliptic genus of N=(2,2) 2D CFT's. We show that such constraints have nontrivial implications for the existence of "extremal" N=(2,2) conformal field theories. Applications to AdS3 supergravity and flux compactifications are addressed.

Symmetries of perturbed conformal field theories

The symmetries of perturbed conformal field theories are analysed. We explain which generators of the chiral algebras of a bulk theory survive a perturbation by an exactly marginal bulk field. We also study the behaviour of D-branes under current-current bulk deformations. We find that the branes always continue to preserve as much symmetry as they possibly can, i.e. as much as is preserved in the bulk. We illustrate these findings with several examples, including permutation branes in WZW models and B-type D-branes in Gepner models.

D-branes at multicritical points

The moduli space of c=1 conformal field theories in two dimensions has a multicritical point, where a circle theory is equivalent to an orbifold theory. We analyse all the conformal branes in both descriptions of this theory, and find convincing evidence that the full brane spectrum coincides. This shows that the equivalence of the two descriptions at this multicritical point extends to the boundary sector. We also perform the analogous analysis for one of the multicritical points of the N=1 superconformal field theories at c=3/2. Again the brane spectra are identical for both descriptions, however the identification is more subtle.

From boundary to bulk in logarithmic CFT

The analogue of the charge-conjugation modular invariant for rational logarithmic conformal field theories is constructed. This is done by reconstructing the bulk spectrum from a simple boundary condition (the analogue of the Cardy `identity brane'). We apply the general method to the c_1,p triplet models and reproduce the previously known bulk theory for p=2 at c=-2. For general p we verify that the resulting partition functions are modular invariant. We also construct the complete set of 2p boundary states, and confirm that the identity brane from which we started indeed exists. As a by-product we obtain a logarithmic version of the Verlinde formula for the c_1,p triplet models.

Constraints on extremal self-dual CFTs

We argue that the existence of a modular differential equation implies that a certain vector vanishes in Zhu's C2 quotient space, and we check this assertion in numerous examples. If this connection is true in general, it would imply that the recently conjectured extremal self-dual conformal field theories at c=24 k cannot exist for k\geq 42.

Topological defects for the free boson CFT

Two different conformal field theories can be joined together along a defect line. We study such defects for the case where the conformal field theories on either side are single free bosons compactified on a circle. We concentrate on topological defects for which the left- and right-moving Virasoro algebras are separately preserved, but not necessarily any additional symmetries. For the case where both radii are rational multiples of the self-dual radius we classify these topological defects. We also show that the isomorphism between two T-dual free boson conformal field theories can be described by the action of a topological defect, and hence that T-duality can be understood as a special type of order-disorder duality.

Worldsheet correlators in AdS(3)/CFT(2)

The AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence is checked beyond the supergravity approximation by comparing correlation functions. To this end we calculate 2- and 3-point functions on the sphere of certain chiral primary operators for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. These results are then compared with the corresponding amplitudes in the dual 2-dimensional conformal field theory. In the limit of small string coupling, where the sphere diagrams dominate the string perturbation series, beautiful agreement is found.

Bulk perturbations of N=2 branes

The evolution of supersymmetric A-type D-branes under the bulk renormalization group flow between two different N=2 minimal models is studied. Using the Landau-Ginzburg description we show that a specific set of branes decouples from the infrared theory, and we make detailed predictions for the behavior of the remaining branes. The Landau-Ginzburg picture is then checked against a direct conformal field theory analysis. In particular we construct a natural index pairing which is preserved by the RG flow, and show that the branes that decouple have vanishing index with the surviving branes.

Bulk induced boundary perturbations

The influence of closed string moduli on the D-brane moduli space is studied from a worldsheet point of view. Whenever a D-brane cannot be adjusted to an infinitesimal change of the closed string background, the corresponding exactly marginal bulk operator ceases to be exactly marginal in the presence of the brane. The bulk perturbation then induces a renormalisation group flow on the boundary whose end-point describes a conformal D-brane of the perturbed theory. We derive the relevant RG equations in general and illustrate the phenomenon with a number of examples, in particular the radius deformation of a free boson on a circle. At the self-dual radius we can give closed formulae for the induced boundary flows which are exact in the boundary coupling constants.

Generalised N=2 permutation branes

Generalised permutation branes in products of N=2 minimal models play an important role in accounting for all RR charges of Gepner models. In this paper an explicit conformal field theory construction of these generalised permutation branes for one simple class of examples is given. We also comment on how this may be generalised to the other cases.

Matrix factorisations and D-branes on K3

D-branes on K3 are analysed from three different points of view. For deformations of hypersurfaces in weighted projected space we use geometrical methods as well as matrix factorisation techniques. Furthermore, we study the D-branes on the T^4/\Z_4 orbifold line in conformal field theory. The behaviour of the D-branes under deformations of the bulk theory are studied in detail, and good agreement between the different descriptions is found.

The RR charges of A-type Gepner models

It is shown that the RR charges of Gepner models are not all accounted for by the usual tensor product and permutation branes. In order to characterise the missing D-branes we study the matrix factorisation approach to the description of D-branes for Gepner models. For each of the A-type models we identify a set of matrix factorisations whose charges generate the full lattice of quantised charges. The additional factorisations that are required correspond to generalised permutation branes.

Matrix factorisations and permutation branes

The description of B-type D-branes on a tensor product of two N=2 minimal models in terms of matrix factorisations is related to the boundary state description in conformal field theory. As an application we show that the D0- and D2-brane for a number of Gepner models are described by permutation boundary states. In some cases (including the quintic) the images of the D2-brane under the Gepner monodromy generate the full charge lattice.

Matrix model eigenvalue integrals and twist fields in the su(2)-WZW model

We propose a formula for the eigenvalue integral of the hermitian one matrix model with infinite well potential in terms of dressed twist fields of the su(2) level one WZW model. The expression holds for arbitrary matrix size n, and provides a suggestive interpretation for the monodromy properties of the matrix model correlators at finite n, as well as in the 1/n-expansion.

Logarithmic torus amplitudes

For the example of the logarithmic triplet theory at c=-2 the chiral vacuum torus amplitudes are analysed. It is found that the space of these torus amplitudes is spanned by the characters of the irreducible representations, as well as a function that can be associated to the logarithmic extension of the vacuum representation. A few implications and generalisations of this result are discussed.
