Quantum Optimisation for Protein-Protein Interaction Network Alignment

Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network alignment combines topological and sequence information to identify conserved modules across species, but global alignment remains challenging: heuristics sacrifice optimality, while exact methods lack scalability. We model the alignment as a weighted maximum common induced subgraph problem and reformulate it through the modular product graph to a minimum-weight vertex cover on the complement, with node weights carrying sequence similarity. To solve this problem, we develop a hybrid framework combining kernelisation, branch-and-bound, and seven Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm (QAOA) formulations. These formulations differ in how the cover constraints are enforced, from penalty terms in the cost Hamiltonian to mixers confined to the feasible subspace. For single round QAOA, we derive closed-form expressions for the expected cost of four circulant mixer variants, enabling performance characterisation without circuit simulation. Applied to synthetic and real-world networks reduced to KEGG pathways, the QAOA formulations achieve high topological conservation on the aligned core while at least maintaining biological conservation comparable to leading classical aligners, at the cost of reduced node coverage. Across selected KEGG pathways, the aligned subnetworks retain disease-associated proteins, preserving biologically relevant information. Cheaper formulations leave more edges uncovered, while enforcing feasibility in the mixer raises circuit depth by one to two orders of magnitude. Together, these results highlight the potential of quantum optimisation for PPI network alignment and the resource trade-offs that will shape its scalability as quantum hardware matures.

Qudit extension of parameterized IQP circuits: A generative quantum machine learning approach to integer data

Parameterized Instantaneous Quantum Polynomial (IQP) circuits have proven useful in quantum generative learning models, particularly for binary distributions. However, when applied to non-binary datasets, they exhibit notable limitations: mapping integer values into qubit-compatible binary representations often destroys the original metric structure of the data. In this paper we aim to extend them to a qudits formulation operating on an integer mapping of the data. The IQP quantum circuit is adapted to encode each integer valued pixel into a bit-string of fixed length and quantum gates are transformed to follow the qudit formalism. As a generative machine learning approach, a suitable loss function for the circuit training and the calculation of the covariance matrix among features are developed and validated on the energy deposits from single-particle electron showers in the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CLIC detector. The method proposed in this work can be also extended to other applications that utilize quantum generative machine learning for non-binary data.

Parity-unfolded distillation architecture for noise-biased platforms

We introduce the parity-unfolded architecture, a fault-tolerant quantum computing scheme that relies on direct preparation and teleportation of small-angle rotations $ Z^{1/2^{k}}$ rather than approximating them with the conventional (Clifford + $T$) gate set. The architecture is enabled by efficient distillation of gates from an arbitrary level of the Clifford hierarchy, which we refer to as parity unfolding. With it, a state $|Z_k\rangle = Z^{1/2^{k}}|{+}\rangle$ can be prepared fault-tolerantly using $2^{k+3} + O(2^{k/2})$ biased-noise qubits on a planar chip with nearest-neighbour connectivity. For algorithms requiring native $Z^{1/2^{k}}$ gates, such as the Quantum Fourier Transform and phase estimation, the proposed scheme allows to reduce resource overheads for up to $k=7$, i.e., up to $T^{1/32}$. Furthermore, when used for the synthesis of arbitrary small-angle rotations, parity-unfolded distillation of ($T$ + $\sqrt{T}$) reduces the minimum achievable logical error rate by 43% while cutting the resource requirements by 26%, when compared to unfolded distillation of only the $T$ gate.

Twisted Drinfeld Centers and Framed String-Nets

We discuss a string-net construction on 2-framed surfaces, taking as algebraic input a finite, rigid tensor category, which is neither assumed to be pivotal nor semi-simple. It is shown that circle categories of our framed string-net construction essentially compute Drinfeld centers twisted by powers of the double dual functor.

A $G$-equivariant String-Net Construction

We develop a string-net construction for the (2,1)-dimensional part of a $G$-equivariant three-dimensional topological field theory based on a $G$-graded spherical fusion category. In this construction, a $G$-equivariant generalization of the Ptolemy groupoid enters. We compute the associated cylinder categories and show that, as expected, the model is closely related to the $G$-equivariant Turaev-Viro theory.

Encoding-Independent Optimization Problem Formulation for Quantum Computing

We present an encoding and hardware-independent formulation of optimization problems for quantum computing. Using this generalized approach, we present an extensive library of optimization problems and their various derived spin encodings. Common building blocks that serve as a construction kit for building these spin Hamiltonians are identified. This paves the way towards a fully automatic construction of Hamiltonians for arbitrary discrete optimization problems. The presented freedom in the problem formulation is a key step for tailoring optimal spin Hamiltonians for different hardware platforms.

Cardy Algebras, Sewing Constraints and String-Nets

In \cite{Schweigert:2019zwt} it was shown how string-net spaces for the Cardy bulk algebra in the Drinfeld center $\mathsf{Z}(\mathsf{C})$ of a modular tensor category $\mathsf{C}$ give rise to a consistent set of correlators. We extend their results to include open-closed world sheets and allow for more general field algebras, which come in the form of $(\mathsf{C}|\mathsf{Z}(\mathsf{C}))$-Cardy algebras. To be more precise, we show that a set of fundamental string-nets with input data from a $(\mathsf{C}|\mathsf{Z}(\mathsf{C}))$-Cardy algebra gives rise to a solution of the sewing constraints formulated in \cite{Kong_2014} and that any set of fundamental string-nets solving the sewing constraints determine a $(\mathsf{C}|\mathsf{Z}(\mathsf{C}))$-Cardy algebra up to isomorphism. Hence we give an alternative proof of the results in \cite{Kong_2014} in terms of string-nets.

dS Spaces and Brane Worlds in Exotic String Theories

We investigate string-phenomenological questions of Hull's exotic superstring theories with Euclidean strings/branes and multiple times. These are known to be plagued by pathologies like the occurrence of ghosts. On the other hand, these theories exhibit de Sitter solutions. Our special focus lies on the question of the coexistence of such de Sitter solutions and ghost-free brane worlds. To this end, the world-sheet CFT description of Euclidean fundamental strings is generalized to include also the open string/D-brane sector. Demanding that in the "observable" gauge theory sector the gauge fields themselves are non-ghosts, a generalization of the dS swampland conjecture is found.

Constructions of L$_{\infty}$ algebras and their field theory realizations

We construct L$_{\infty}$ algebras for general `initial data' given by a vector space equipped with an antisymmetric bracket not necessarily satisfying the Jacobi identity. We prove that any such bracket can be extended to a 2-term L$_{\infty}$ algebra on a graded vector space of twice the dimension, with the 3-bracket being related to the Jacobiator. While these L$_{\infty}$ algebras always exist, they generally do not realize a non-trivial symmetry in a field theory. In order to define L$_{\infty}$ algebras with genuine field theory realizations, we prove the significantly more general theorem that if the Jacobiator takes values in the image of any linear map that defines an ideal there is a 3-term L$_{\infty}$ algebra with a generally non-trivial 4-bracket. We discuss special cases such as the commutator algebra of octonions, its contraction to the `R-flux algebra', and the Courant algebroid.

On the Uniqueness of L$_\infty$ bootstrap: Quasi-isomorphisms are Seiberg-Witten Maps

In the context of the recently proposed L$_\infty$ bootstrap approach, the question arises whether the so constructed gauge theories are unique solutions of the L$_\infty$ relations. Physically it is expected that two gauge theories should be considered equivalent if they are related by a field redefinition described by a Seiberg-Witten map. To clarify the consequences in the L$_\infty$ framework, it is proven that Seiberg-Witten maps between physically equivalent gauge theories correspond to quasi-isomorphisms of the underlying L$_\infty$ algebras. The proof suggests an extension of the definition of a Seiberg-Witten map to the closure conditions of two gauge transformations and the dynamical equations of motion.

On the Structure of Quantum L$_\infty$ algebras

It is believed that any classical gauge symmetry gives rise to an L$_\infty$ algebra. Based on the recently realized relation between classical ${\cal W}$ algebras and L$_\infty$ algebras, we analyze how this generalizes to the quantum case. Guided by the existence of quantum ${\cal W}$ algebras, we provide a physically well motivated definition of quantum L$_\infty$ algebras describing the consistency of global symmetries in quantum field theories. In this case we are restricted to only two non-trivial graded vector spaces $X_0$ and $X_{-1}$ containing the symmetry variations and the symmetry generators. This quantum L$_\infty$ algebra structure is explicitly exemplified for the quantum ${\cal W}_3$ algebra. The natural quantum product between fields is the normal ordered one so that, due to contractions between quantum fields, the higher L$_\infty$ relations receive off-diagonal quantum corrections. Curiously, these are not present in the loop L$_\infty$ algebra of closed string field theory.

${\cal W}$ algebras are L$_\infty$ algebras

It is shown that the closure of the infinitesimal symmetry transformations underlying classical ${\cal W}$ algebras give rise to L$_\infty$ algebras with in general field dependent gauge parameters. Therefore, the class of well understood ${\cal W}$ algebras provides highly non-trivial examples of such strong homotopy Lie-algebras. We develop the general formalism for this correspondence and apply it explicitly to the classical ${\cal W}_3$ algebra.
