Supersolids versus phase separation in two-dimensional lattice bosons

We study the nature of the ground state of the strongly-coupled two dimensional extended boson Hubbard model on a square lattice. We demonstrate that strong but finite on-site interaction U along with a comparable nearest-neighbor repulsion V result in a thermodynamically stable supersolid ground state just above half-filling, and that the checker-board crystal is unstable for smaller V, and for any V just below half-filling. The interplay between these two interaction energies results in a rich phase diagram which is studied in detail using quantum Monte Carlo methods.

Overcoming the critical slowing down of flat-histogram Monte Carlo simulations: Cluster updates and optimized broad-histogram ensembles

We study the performance of Monte Carlo simulations that sample a broad histogram in energy by determining the mean first-passage time to span the entire energy space of d-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising/Potts models. We first show that flat-histogram Monte Carlo methods with single-spin flip updates such as the Wang-Landau algorithm or the multicanonical method perform sub-optimally in comparison to an unbiased Markovian random walk in energy space. For the d=1,2,3 Ising model, the mean first-passage time τscales with the number of spins N=L^d as τ\propto N^2L^z. The critical exponent z is found to decrease as the dimensionality d is increased. In the mean-field limit of infinite dimensions we find that z vanishes up to logarithmic corrections. We then demonstrate how the slowdown characterized by z>0 for finite d can be overcome by two complementary approaches - cluster dynamics in connection with Wang-Landau sampling and the recently developed ensemble optimization technique. Both approaches are found to improve the random walk in energy space so that τ\propto N^2 up to logarithmic corrections for the d=1 and d=2 Ising model.

A cluster algorithm for resistively shunted Josephson junctions

We present a cluster algorithm for resistively shunted Josephson junctions and similar physical systems, which dramatically improves sampling efficiency. The algorithm combines local updates in Fourier space with rejection-free cluster updates which exploit the symmetries of the Josephson coupling energy. As an application, we consider the localization transition of a single junction at intermediate Josephson coupling and determine the temperature dependence of the zero bias resistance as a function of dissipation strength.

A Generic Random Number Generator Test Suite

The heart of every Monte Carlo simulation is a source of high quality random numbers and the generator has to be picked carefully. Since the ``Ferrenberg affair'' it is known to a broad community that statistical tests alone do not suffice to determine the quality of a generator, but also application-based tests are needed. With the inclusion of an extensible random number library and the definition of a generic interface into the revised C++ standard it will be important to have access to an extensive C++ random number test suite. Most currently available test suites are limited to a subset of tests are written in Fortran or C and cannot easily be used with the C++ random number generator library.

Computational complexity and fundamental limitations to fermionic quantum Monte Carlo simulations

Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, while being efficient for bosons, suffer from the "negative sign problem'' when applied to fermions - causing an exponential increase of the computing time with the number of particles. A polynomial time solution to the sign problem is highly desired since it would provide an unbiased and numerically exact method to simulate correlated quantum systems. Here we show, that such a solution is almost certainly unattainable by proving that the sign problem is NP-hard, implying that a generic solution of the sign problem would also solve all problems in the complexity class NP (nondeterministic polynomial) in polynomial time.

Phase diagram and critical exponents of a dissipative Ising spin chain in a transverse magnetic field

We consider a one-dimensional Ising model in a transverse magnetic field coupled to a dissipative heat bath. The phase diagram and the critical exponents are determined from extensive Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the character of the quantum phase transition is radically altered from the corresponding non-dissipative model and the double-well coupled to a dissipative heat bath with linear friction. Spatial couplings and the dissipative dynamics combine to form a new quantum criticality.

Optimizing the ensemble for equilibration in broad-histogram Monte Carlo simulations

We present an adaptive algorithm which optimizes the statistical-mechanical ensemble in a generalized broad-histogram Monte Carlo simulation to maximize the system's rate of round trips in total energy. The scaling of the mean round-trip time from the ground state to the maximum entropy state for this local-update method is found to be O([N log N]^2) for both the ferromagnetic and the fully frustrated 2D Ising model with N spins. Our new algorithm thereby substantially outperforms flat-histogram methods such as the Wang-Landau algorithm.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of confined bosonic atoms in optical lattices

We study properties of ultra-cold bosonic atoms in one, two and three dimensional optical lattices by large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Bose Hubbard model in parabolic confinement potentials. Local phase structures of the atoms are shown to be accessible via a well defined local compressibility, quantifying a global response of the system to a local perturbation. An indicator for the presence of extended Mott plateaux is shown to stem from the shape of the coherent component of the momentum distribution function, amenable to experimental detection. Additional fine structures in the momentum distribution are found to appear unrelated to the local phase structure, disproving previous claims. We discuss limitations of local potential approximations for confined Bose gases, and the absence of quantum criticality and critical slowing down in parabolic confinement potentials, thus accounting for the fast dynamics in establishing phase coherence in current experiments. In contrast, we find that flat confinement potentials allow quantum critical behavior to be observed already on moderately sized optical lattices. Our results furthermore demonstrate, that the experimental detection of the Mott transition would be significantly eased in flat confinement potentials.

Orbital and spin correlations in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$: A mean field study

The alloy Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ exhibits a complex phase diagram with peculiar magnetic metallic phases. In this paper some aspects of this alloy are discussed based on a mean field theory for an effective Kugel-Khomskii model of localized orbital and spin degrees of freedom. This model results from an orbital selective Mott transition which in the three-band system localized two orbitals while leaving the third one itinerant. Special attention is given to the region around a structure quantum phase transition at $ x \approx 0.5 $ where the crystal lattice changes from tetragonal to orthorhombic symmetry while leaving the system metallic. This transition yields, a change from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic spin correlations. The complete mean field phase diagram for this transition is given including orbital and spin order. The anisotropy of spin susceptibility, a consequence of spin-orbit coupling and orbital correlation, is a tell-tale sign of one of these phases. In the predominantly antiferromagnetic phase we describe a metamagnetic transition in a magnetic field and show that coupling of the itinerant band to the localized degrees of freedom yields an anomalous longitudinal magnetoresistance transition. Both phenomena are connected with the evolution of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domains in the external magnetic field and agree qualitatively with the experimental findings.

Universal conductance of nanowires near the superconductor-metal quantum transition

We consider wires near a zero temperature transition between superconducting and metallic states. The critical theory obeys hyperscaling, which leads to a universal frequency, temperature, and length dependence of the conductance; quantum and thermal phase slips are contained within this critical theory. Normal (NN), superconducting (SS) and mixed (SN) leads on the wire determine distinct universality classes. For the SN case, wires near the critical point have a universal d.c. conductance which is independent of the length of the wire at low temperatures.

Computational complexity and simulation of rare events of Ising spin glasses

We discuss the computational complexity of random 2D Ising spin glasses, which represent an interesting class of constraint satisfaction problems for black box optimization. Two extremal cases are considered: (1) the +/- J spin glass, and (2) the Gaussian spin glass. We also study a smooth transition between these two extremal cases. The computational complexity of all studied spin glass systems is found to be dominated by rare events of extremely hard spin glass samples. We show that complexity of all studied spin glass systems is closely related to Frechet extremal value distribution. In a hybrid algorithm that combines the hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm (hBOA) with a deterministic bit-flip hill climber, the number of steps performed by both the global searcher (hBOA) and the local searcher follow Frechet distributions. Nonetheless, unlike in methods based purely on local search, the parameters of these distributions confirm good scalability of hBOA with local search. We further argue that standard performance measures for optimization algorithms--such as the average number of evaluations until convergence--can be misleading. Finally, our results indicate that for highly multimodal constraint satisfaction problems, such as Ising spin glasses, recombination-based search can provide qualitatively better results than mutation-based search.

On the Melting of Bosonic Stripes

We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to determine the finite temperature phase diagram and to investigate the thermal and quantum melting of stripe phases in a two-dimensional hard-core boson model. At half filling and low temperatures the stripes melt at a first order transition. In the doped system, the melting transitions of the smectic phase at high temperatures and the superfluid smectic (supersolid) phase at low temperatures are either very weakly first order, or of second order with no clear indications for an intermediate nematic phase.

Wang-Landau sampling for quantum systems: algorithms to overcome tunneling problems and calculate the free energy

We present a generalization of the classical Wang-Landau algorithm [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2050 (2001)] to quantum systems. The algorithm proceeds by stochastically evaluating the coefficients of a high temperature series expansion or a finite temperature perturbation expansion to arbitrary order. Similar to their classical counterpart, the algorithms are efficient at thermal and quantum phase transitions, greatly reducing the tunneling problem at first order phase transitions, and allow the direct calculation of the free energy and entropy.

Néel and Spin-Peierls ground states of two-dimensional SU(N) quantum antiferromagnets

The two-dimensional SU(N) quantum antiferromagnet, a generalization of the quantum Heisenberg model, is investigated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ground state for $N\le 4$ is found to be of the Néel type with broken SU(N) symmetry, whereas it is of the Spin-Peierls type for $N\ge 5$ with broken lattice translational invariance. No intermediate spin-liquid phase was observed in contrast to previous numerical simulations on smaller lattices [Santoro et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83} 3065 (1999)].

Finite-Temperature Phase Diagram of Hard-Core Bosons in Two Dimensions

We determine the finite-temperature phase diagram of the square lattice hard-core boson Hubbard model with nearest neighbor repulsion using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This model is equivalent to an anisotropic spin-1/2 XXZ model in a magnetic field. We present the rich phase diagram with a first order transition between solid and superfluid phase, instead of a previously conjectured supersolid and a tricritical end point to phase separation. Unusual reentrant behavior with ordering upon increasing the temperature is found, similar to the Pomeranchuk effect in 3He.

The transition between hole-pairs and four-hole clusters in four-leg tJ ladders

Holes weakly doped into a four-leg \tj ladder bind in pairs. At dopings exceeding a critical doping of $δ_c\simeq {1/8}$ four hole clusters are observed to form in DMRG calculations. The symmetry of the ground state wavefunction does not change and we are able to reproduce this behavior qualitatively with an effective bosonic model in which the four-leg ladder is represented as two coupled two-leg ladders and hole-pairs are mapped on hard core bosons moving along and between these ladders. At lower dopings, $δ<δ_c$, a one dimensional bosonic representation for hole-pairs works and allows us to calculate accurately the Luttinger liquid parameter $\krho$, which takes the universal value $\krho=1$ as half-filling is approached.

Spin orthogonality catastrophe in two-dimensional antiferromagnets and superconductors

We compute the spectral function of a spin S hole injected into a two-dimensional antiferromagnet or superconductor in the vicinity of a magnetic quantum critical point. We show that, near van Hove singularities, the problem maps onto that of a static vacancy carrying excess spin S. The hole creation operator is characterized by a new boundary anomalous dimension and a vanishing quasiparticle residue at the critical point. We discuss possible relevance to photoemission spectra of cuprate superconductors near the anti-nodal points.

Thermodynamics of the t-J Ladder: A Stable Finite Temperature Density Matrix Renormalization Group Calculation

Accurate numerical simulations of a doped t-J model on a two-leg ladder are presented for the particle number, chemical potential, magnetic susceptibility and entropy in the limit of large exchange coupling on the rung using a finite temperature density matrix renormalization group (TDMRG) method. This required an improved algorithm to achieve numerical stability down to low temperatures. The thermal dissociation of hole pairs and of the rung singlets are separately observed and the evolution of the hole pair binding energy and magnon spin gap with hole doping is determined.
