From the Cooper problem to canted supersolids in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We calculate the phase diagram of the Bose-Fermi Hubbard model on the 3d cubic lattice at fermionic half filling and bosonic unit filling by means of single-site dynamical mean-field theory. For fast bosons, this is equivalent to the Cooper problem in which the bosons can induce s-wave pairing between the fermions. We also find miscible superfluid and canted supersolid phases depending on the interspecies coupling strength. In contrast, slow bosons favor fermionic charge density wave structures for attractive fermionic interactions. These competing instabilities lead to a rich phase diagram within reach of cold gas experiments.

Effect of thermal fluctuations in topological p-wave superconductors

We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on the topological stability of chiral p-wave superconductors. We consider two models of superconductors: spinless and spinful with a focus on topological properties and Majorana zero-energy modes. We show that proliferation of vortex-antivortex pairs above the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature T_KT drives the transition from a thermal Quantum Hall insulator to a thermal metal/insulator, and dramatically modifies the ground-state degeneracy splitting. Therefore, in order to utilize 2D chiral p-wave superconductors for topological quantum computing, the temperature should be much smaller than T_KT. Within the spinful chiral p-wave model, we also investigate the interplay between half-quantum vortices carrying Majorana zero-energy modes and full-quantum vortices having trivial topological charge, and discuss topological properties of half-quantum vortices in the background of proliferating full-quantum vortices.

One-dimensional itinerant interacting non-Abelian anyons

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains. We focus on itinerant Ising (Majorana) and Fibonacci anyons, which are, respectively, related to SU(2)_2 and SU(2)_3 anyons and also, respectively, describe quasiparticles of the Moore-Read and Z_3-Read-Rezayi fractional quantum Hall states. Following the derivation of the electronic large-U effective Hubbard model, we derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low-energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (neutral) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum can be performed by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors. The anyonic sector is the one of a squeezed chain of localized interacting anyons, and hence is described by the same conformal field theory (CFT), with central charge c=1/2 for Ising anyons and c=7/10 or c=4/5 for Fibonacci anyons with antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling, respectively. The charge sector is the spectrum of a chain of hardcore bosons subject to phase shifts which coincide with the momenta of the combined anyonic eigenstates, revealing a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization. The combined central charge extracted from the entanglement entropy between segments of the chain is shown to be 1+c, where c is the central charge of the underlying CFT of the localized anyon (squeezed) chain.

Translation invariance, topology, and protection of criticality in chains of interacting anyons

Using finite size scaling arguments, the critical properties of a chain of interacting anyons can be extracted from the low energy spectrum of a finite system. In Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 160409 (2007), Feiguin et al. showed that an antiferromagnetic (AFM) chain of Fibonacci anyons on a torus is in the same universality class as the tricritical Ising model, and that criticality is protected by a topological symmetry. In the present paper we first review the graphical formalism for the study of anyons on the disc and demonstrate how this formalism may be consistently extended to the study of systems on surfaces of higher genus. We then employ this graphical formalism to study finite rings of interacting anyons on both the disc and the torus, and show that analysis on the disc necessarily yields an energy spectrum which is a subset of that which is obtained on the torus. For a critical Hamiltonian, one may extract from this subset the scaling dimensions of the local scaling operators which respect the topological symmetry of the system. Related considerations are also shown to apply for open chains.

Double transfer through Dirac points in a tunable honeycomb optical lattice

We report on Bloch-Zener oscillations of an ultracold Fermi gas in a tunable honeycomb lattice. The quasi-momentum distribution of the atoms is measured after sequentially passing through two Dirac points. We observe a double-peak feature in the transferred fraction to the second band, both as a function of the band gap at the Dirac points and the quasi-momentum of the trajectory. Our results are in good agreement with a simple analytical model based on two successive Landau-Zener transitions. Owing to the variation of the potential gradient over the cloud size, coherent Stückelberg oscillations are not visible in our measurements. This effect of the harmonic confinement is confirmed by a numerical simulation of the dynamics of a trapped 2D system.

Bond disorder induced criticality of the three-color Ashkin-Teller model

An intriguing result of statistical mechanics is that a first-order phase transition can be rounded by disorder coupled to energy-like variables. In fact, even more intriguing is that the rounding may manifest itself as a critical point, quantum or classical. In general, it is not known, however, what universality classes, if any, such criticalities belong to. In order to shed light on this question we examine in detail the disordered three-color Ashkin-Teller model by Monte Carlo methods. Extensive analyses indicate that the critical exponents define a new universality class. We show that the rounding of the first-order transition of the pure model due to the impurities is manifested as criticality. However, the magnetization critical exponent, (β), and the correlation length critical exponent, (ν), are found to vary with disorder and the four-spin coupling strength, and we conclusively rule out that the model belongs to the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model.

Three-sublattice order in the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the square and triangular lattice

We present a numerical study of the SU(3) Heisenberg model of three-flavor fermions on the triangular and square lattice by means of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS). For the triangular lattice we confirm that the ground state has a three-sublattice order with a finite ordered moment which is compatible with the result from linear flavor wave theory (LFWT). The same type of order has recently been predicted also for the square lattice [PRL 105, 265301 (2010)] from LFWT and exact diagonalization. However, for this case the ordered moment cannot be computed based on LFWT due to divergent fluctuations. Our numerical study clearly supports this three-sublattice order, with an ordered moment of m=0.2-0.4 in the thermodynamic limit.

Fractionalization of itinerant anyons in one dimensional chains

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains, focusing in particular on itinerant Ising anyon chains, and derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (non-Abelian) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors requires a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization.

Simultaneous dimerization and SU(4) symmetry breaking of 4-color fermions on the square lattice

Using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS), exact diagonalization, and flavor-wave theory, we show that the SU(4) Heisenberg model undergoes a spontaneous dimerization on the square lattice, in contrast to its SU(2) and SU(3) counterparts, which develop Neel and three-sublattice stripe-like long-range order. Since the ground state of a dimer is not a singlet for SU(4) but a 6-dimensional irrep, this leaves the door open for further symmetry breaking. We provide evidence that, unlike in SU(4) ladders, where dimers pair up to form singlet plaquettes, here the SU(4) symmetry is additionally broken, leading to a gapless spectrum in spite of the broken translational symmetry.

Multi-orbital Kondo physics of Co in Cu hosts

We investigate the electronic structure of cobalt atoms on a copper surface and in a copper host by combining density functional calculations with a numerically exact continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo treatment of the five-orbital impurity problem. In both cases we find low energy resonances in the density of states of all five Co $d$-orbitals. The corresponding self-energies indicate the formation of a Fermi liquid state at low temperatures. Our calculations yield the characteristic energy scale -- the Kondo temperature -- for both systems in good agreement with experiments. We quantify the charge fluctuations in both geometries and suggest that Co in Cu must be described by an Anderson impurity model rather than by a model assuming frozen impurity valency at low energies. We show that fluctuations of the orbital degrees of freedom are crucial for explaining the Kondo temperatures obtained in our calculations and measured in experiments.

Galois Conjugates of Topological Phases

Galois conjugation relates unitary conformal field theories (CFTs) and topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) to their non-unitary counterparts. Here we investigate Galois conjugates of quantum double models, such as the Levin-Wen model. While these Galois conjugated Hamiltonians are typically non-Hermitian, we find that their ground state wave functions still obey a generalized version of the usual code property (local operators do not act on the ground state manifold) and hence enjoy a generalized topological protection. The key question addressed in this paper is whether such non-unitary topological phases can also appear as the ground states of Hermitian Hamiltonians. Specific attempts at constructing Hermitian Hamiltonians with these ground states lead to a loss of the code property and topological protection of the degenerate ground states. Beyond this we rigorously prove that no local change of basis can transform the ground states of the Galois conjugated doubled Fibonacci theory into the ground states of a topological model whose Hermitian Hamiltonian satisfies Lieb-Robinson bounds. These include all gapped local or quasi-local Hamiltonians. A similar statement holds for many other non-unitary TQFTs. One consequence is that the "Gaffnian" wave function cannot be the ground state of a gapped fractional quantum Hall state.

Spectral properties of the three-dimensional Hubbard model

We present momentum resolved single-particle spectra for the three-dimensional Hubbard model for the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetically ordered phase obtained within the dynamical cluster approximation. The effective cluster problem is solved by continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The absence of a time discretization error and the ability to perform Monte Carlo measurements directly in Matsubara frequencies enable us to analytically continue the self-energies by maximum entropy, which is essential to obtain momentum resolved spectral functions for the N'eel state. We investigate the dependence on temperature and interaction strength and the effect of magnetic frustration introduced by a next-nearest neighbor hopping. One particular question we address here is the influence of the frustrating interaction on the metal insulator transition of the three-dimensional Hubbard model.

Continuous-time Monte Carlo methods for quantum impurity models

Quantum impurity models describe an atom or molecule embedded in a host material with which it can exchange electrons. They are basic to nanoscience as representations of quantum dots and molecular conductors and play an increasingly important role in the theory of "correlated electron" materials as auxiliary problems whose solution gives the "dynamical mean field" approximation to the self energy and local correlation functions. These applications require a method of solution which provides access to both high and low energy scales and is effective for wide classes of physically realistic models. The continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithms reviewed in this article meet this challenge. We present derivations and descriptions of the algorithms in enough detail to allow other workers to write their own implementations, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the methods, summarize the problems to which the new methods have been successfully applied and outline prospects for future applications.

Dynamical mean-field theory for bosons

We discuss the recently developed bosonic dynamical mean-field (B-DMFT) framework, which maps a bosonic lattice model onto the selfconsistent solution of a bosonic impurity model with coupling to a reservoir of normal and condensed bosons. The effective impurity action is derived in several ways: (i) as an approximation to the kinetic energy functional of the lattice problem, (ii) using a cavity approach, and (iii) by using an effective medium approach based on adding a one-loop correction to the selfconsistently defined condensate. To solve the impurity problem, we use a continuous-time Monte Carlo algorithm based on a sampling of a perturbation expansion in the hybridization functions and the condensate wave function. As applications of the formalism we present finite temperature B-DMFT phase diagrams for the bosonic Hubbard model on a 3d cubic and 2d square lattice, the condensate order parameter as a function of chemical potential, critical exponents for the condensate, the approach to the weakly interacting Bose gas regime for weak repulsions, and the kinetic energy as a function of temperature.

Topological Phases: An Expedition off Lattice

Motivated by the goal to give the simplest possible microscopic foundation for a broad class of topological phases, we study quantum mechanical lattice models where the topology of the lattice is one of the dynamical variables. However, a fluctuating geometry can remove the separation between the system size and the range of local interactions, which is important for topological protection and ultimately the stability of a topological phase. In particular, it can open the door to a pathology, which has been studied in the context of quantum gravity and goes by the name of `baby universe', Here we discuss three distinct approaches to suppressing these pathological fluctuations. We complement this discussion by applying Cheeger's theory relating the geometry of manifolds to their vibrational modes to study the spectra of Hamiltonians. In particular, we present a detailed study of the statistical properties of loop gas and string net models on fluctuating lattices, both analytically and numerically.

Quantum spin ladders of non-Abelian anyons

Quantum ladder models, consisting of coupled chains, form intriguing systems bridging one and two dimensions and have been well studied in the context of quantum magnets and fermionic systems. Here we consider ladder systems made of more exotic quantum mechanical degrees of freedom, so-called non-Abelian anyons, which can be thought of as certain quantum deformations of ordinary SU(2) spins. Such non-Abelian anyons occur as quasiparticle excitations in topological quantum fluids, including p_x + i p_y superconductors, certain fractional quantum Hall states, and rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. Here we use a combination of exact diagonalization and conformal field theory to determine the phase diagrams of ladders with up to four chains. We discuss how phenomena familiar from ordinary SU(2) spin ladders are generalized in their anyonic counterparts, such as gapless and gapped phases, odd/even effects with the ladder width, and elementary `magnon' excitations. Other features are entirely due to the topological nature of the anyonic degrees of freedom.

Microscopic models of interacting Yang-Lee anyons

Collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons have recently been studied mostly in the context of certain fractional quantum Hall states, such as the Moore-Read state proposed to describe the physics of the quantum Hall plateau at filling fraction v = 5/2. In this manuscript, we further expand this line of research and present non-unitary generalizations of interacting anyon models. In particular, we introduce the notion of Yang-Lee anyons, discuss their relation to the so-called `Gaffnian' quantum Hall wave function, and describe an elementary model for their interactions. A one-dimensional version of this model -- a non-unitary generalization of the original golden chain model -- can be fully understood in terms of an exact algebraic solution and numerical diagonalization. We discuss the gapless theories of these chain models for general su(2)_k anyonic theories and their Galois conjugates. We further introduce and solve a one-dimensional version of the Levin-Wen model for non-unitary Yang-Lee anyons.

Mutual information in classical spin models

The total many-body correlations present in finite temperature classical spin systems are studied using the concept of mutual information. As opposed to zero-temperature quantum phase transitions, the total correlations are not maximal at the phase transition, but reach a maximum in the high temperature paramagnetic phase. The Shannon and Renyi mutual information in both Ising and Potts models in 2 dimensions are calculated numerically by combining matrix product states algorithms and Monte Carlo sampling techniques.
