Algorithms in 4-manifold topology

We show that there exists an algorithm that takes as input two closed, simply connected, topological 4-manifolds and decides whether or not these 4-manifolds are homeomorphic. In particular, we explain in detail how closed, simply connected, topological 4-manifolds can be naturally represented by a Kirby diagram consisting only of 2-handles. This representation is used as input for our algorithm. Along the way, we develop an algorithm to compute the Kirby-Siebenmann invariant of a closed, simply connected, topological 4-manifold from any of its Kirby diagrams and describe an algorithm that decides whether or not two intersection forms are isometric. In a slightly different direction, we discuss the decidability of the stable classification of smooth manifolds with more general fundamental groups. Here we show that there exists an algorithm that takes as input two closed, oriented, smooth 4-manifolds with fundamental groups isomorphic to a finite group with cyclic Sylow 2-subgroup, an infinite cyclic group, or a group of geometric dimension at most 3 (in the latter case we additionally assume that the universal covers of both 4-manifolds are not spin), and decides whether or not these two 4-manifolds are orientation-preserving stably diffeomorphic.

The algebraic cheap rebuilding property

We present an axiomatic approach to combination theorems for various homological properties of groups and, more generally, of chain complexes. Examples of such properties include algebraic finiteness properties, $\ell^2$-invisibility, $\ell^2$-acyclicity, lower bounds for Novikov--Shubin invariants, and vanishing of homology growth. As a key example, we introduce an algebraic version of Ab\'ert--Bergeron--Fr\k{a}czyk--Gaboriau's cheap rebuilding property that implies vanishing of torsion homology growth and fits into our axiomatic framework for combination theorems. In particular, we obtain that certain graphs of groups with amenable vertex groups and elementary amenable edge groups have vanishing torsion homology growth.

Torsion homology growth and cheap rebuilding of inner-amenable groups

We prove that virtually torsion-free, residually finite groups that are inner-amenable and non-amenable have the cheap 1-rebuilding property, a notion recently introduced by Ab\'ert, Bergeron, Fr\k{a}czyk and Gaboriau. As a consequence, the first $\ell^2$-Betti number with arbitrary field coefficients and log-torsion in degree 1 vanish for these groups. This extends results previously known for amenable groups to inner-amenable groups. We use a structure theorem of Tucker-Drob for inner-amenable groups showing the existence of a chain of q-normal subgroups.
