Magnetic excitations in a bond-centered stripe phase: Spin waves far from the semi-classical limit

Using a spin-only model, we compute spin excitation spectra in a bond-centered stripe state with long-range magnetic order. We employ a bond operator formalism, which naturally captures both dimerization and broken spin symmetry in a unified framework. At low energies, the spin excitations resemble spin waves, but at higher energies they are very similar to spin-1 excitations of isolated spin ladders. Our theory does well describe neutron scattering data [J. M. Tranquada et al., Nature 429, 534 (2004)] on LaBaCuO, pointing towards bond order in this material.

Exotic vs. conventional scaling and universality in a disordered bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We present large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional (2d) bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with random dimer dilution. In contrast to the exotic scaling scenarios found in many other random quantum systems, the quantum phase transition in this system is characterized by a finite-disorder fixed point with power-law scaling. After accounting for strong corrections to scaling, characterized by a leading irrelevant exponent of ω= 0.48, we find universal, i.e., disorder-independent, critical exponents z=1.310(6) and ν=1.16(3). We discuss the consequences of these findings and suggest new experiments.

Phenomenological lattice model for dynamic spin and charge fluctuations in the cuprates

Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments on the cuprate superconductors, we present a phenomenological framework describing the dynamics of collective spin excitations coupled to charge/bond order fluctuations. Our quantum lattice model contains two order parameter fields, and can capture spin excitations both in broken-symmetry states with static lattice modulations, as well as in homogeneous states where the charge/bond order is fluctuating. We present results for different types of static charge/bond order, namely site- and bond-centered stripes, and plaquette modulation.

Critical theories for the pseudogap Kondo problem

We discuss quantum phase transitions in the pseudogap Kondo problem, which describes a magnetic moment coupled to conduction electrons with a power-law density of states, rho(omega) ~ |omega|^r. We show that different perturbative expansions, together with renormalization group techniques, provide effective low-energy field theories for the relevant critical fixed points. In particular, we review expansions near the lower-critical and upper-critical dimensions of the problem, being r=0 and r=1, respectively.

Critical properties of the Fermi-Bose Kondo and pseudogap Kondo models: Renormalized perturbation theory

Magnetic impurities coupled to both fermionic and bosonic baths or to a fermionic bath with pseudogap density of states, described by the Fermi-Bose Kondo and pseudogap Kondo models, display non-trivial intermediate coupling fixed points associated with critical local-moment fluctuations and local non-Fermi liquid behavior. Based on renormalization group together with a renormalized perturbation expansion around the free-impurity limit, we calculate various impurity properties in the vicinity of those intermediate-coupling fixed points. In particular, we compute the conduction electron T matrix, the impurity susceptibility, and the residual impurity entropy, and relate our findings to certain scenarios of local quantum criticality in strongly correlated lattice models.

Upper-critical dimension in a quantum impurity model: Critical theory of the asymmetric pseudogap Kondo problem

Impurity moments coupled to fermions with a pseudogap density of states display a quantum phase transition between a screened and a free moment phase upon variation of the Kondo coupling. We describe the universal theory of this transition for the experimentally relevant case of particle-hole asymmetry. The theory takes the form of a crossing between effective singlet and doublet levels, interacting with low-energy fermions. Depending on the pseudogap exponent, this interaction is either relevant or irrelevant under renormalization group transformations, establishing the existence of an upper-critical "dimension" in this impurity problem. Using perturbative renormalization group techniques we compute various critical properties and compare with numerical results.

Quantum phase transition of Ising-coupled Kondo impurities

We investigate a model of two Kondo impurities coupled via an Ising interaction. Exploiting the mapping to a generalized single-impurity Anderson model, we establish that the model has a singlet and a (pseudospin) doublet phase separated by a Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition. Based on a strong-coupling analysis and renormalization group arguments, we show that at this transition the conductance G through the system either displays a zero-bias anomaly, G ~ |V|^{-2(\sqrt{2}-1)}, or takes a universal value, G = e^2/(π\hbar) cos^2[π/(2\sqrt{2})], depending on the experimental setup. Close to the Toulouse point of the individual Kondo impurities, the strong-coupling analysis allows to obtain the location of the phase boundary analytically. For general model parameters, we determine the phase diagram and investigate the thermodynamics using numerical renormalization group calculations. In the singlet phase close to the quantum phase transtion, the entropy is quenched in two steps: first the two Ising-coupled spins form a magnetic mini-domain which is, in a second step, screened by a Kondoesque collective resonance in an effective solitonic Fermi sea. In addition, we present a flow equation analysis which provides a different mapping of the two-impurity model to a generalized single-impurity Anderson model in terms of fully renormalized couplings, which is applicable for the whole range of model parameters.

Quantum phase transitions

In recent years, quantum phase transitions have attracted the interest of both theorists and experimentalists in condensed matter physics. These transitions, which are accessed at zero temperature by variation of a non-thermal control parameter, can influence the behavior of electronic systems over a wide range of the phase diagram. Quantum phase transitions occur as a result of competing ground state phases. The cuprate superconductors which can be tuned from a Mott insulating to a d-wave superconducting phase by carrier doping are a paradigmatic example. This review introduces important concepts of phase transitions and discusses the interplay of quantum and classical fluctuations near criticality. The main part of the article is devoted to bulk quantum phase transitions in condensed matter systems. Several classes of transitions will be briefly reviewed, pointing out, e.g., conceptual differences between ordering transitions in metallic and insulating systems. An interesting separate class of transitions are boundary phase transitions where only degrees of freedom of a subsystem become critical; this will be illustrated in a few examples. The article is aimed on bridging the gap between high-level theoretical presentations and research papers specialized in certain classes of materials. It will give an overview over a variety of different quantum transitions, critically discuss open theoretical questions, and frequently make contact with recent experiments in condensed matter physics.

Numerical Renormalization Group for Bosonic Systems and Application to the Subohmic Spin-Boson Model

We describe the generalization of Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group method to quantum impurity models with a bosonic bath, providing a general non-perturbative approach to bosonic impurity models which can access exponentially small energies and temperatures. As an application, we consider the spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with power-law spectral density, J(omega) ~ omega^s. We find clear evidence for a line of continuous quantum phase transitions for subohmic bath exponents 0<s<1; the line terminates in the well-known Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at s=1. Contact is made with results from perturbative renormalization group, and various other applications are outlined.

Soliton Fermi sea in models of Ising-coupled Kondo impurities

We study a model of Ising-coupled Kondo impurities that can be applied to quantum dots with capacitance coupling, coupled qubits with an incoherent environment, etc. We show that this model becomes equivalent to a Anderson impurity model with a novel solitonic Fermi sea. We derive exact results at the Toulouse point, and use the flow equation method to extend this analysis away from the Toulouse point for not too large Ising couplings.

Weak magnetism and non-Fermi liquids near heavy-fermion critical points

This paper is concerned with the weak-moment magnetism in heavy-fermion materials and its relation to the non-Fermi liquid physics observed near the transition to the Fermi liquid. We explore the hypothesis that the primary fluctuations responsible for the non-Fermi liquid physics are those associated with the destruction of the large Fermi surface of the Fermi liquid. Magnetism is suggested to be a low-energy instability of the resulting small Fermi surface state. A concrete realization of this picture is provided by a fractionalized Fermi liquid state which has a small Fermi surface of conduction electrons, but also has other exotic excitations with interactions described by a gauge theory in its deconfined phase. Of particular interest is a three-dimensional fractionalized Fermi liquid with a spinon Fermi surface and a U(1) gauge structure. A direct second-order transition from this state to the conventional Fermi liquid is possible and involves a jump in the electron Fermi surface volume. The critical point displays non-Fermi liquid behavior. A magnetic phase may develop from a spin density wave instability of the spinon Fermi surface. This exotic magnetic metal may have a weak ordered moment although the local moments do not participate in the Fermi surface. Experimental signatures of this phase and implications for heavy-fermion systems are discussed.

Fractionalized Fermi liquids

In spatial dimensions d >= 2, Kondo lattice models of conduction and local moment electrons can exhibit a fractionalized, non-magnetic state (FL*) with a Fermi surface of sharp electron-like quasiparticles, enclosing a volume quantized by (ρ_a-1)(mod 2), with ρ_a the mean number of all electrons per unit cell of the ground state. Such states have fractionalized excitations linked to the deconfined phase of a gauge theory. Confinement leads to a conventional Fermi liquid state, with a Fermi volume quantized by ρ_a (mod 2), and an intermediate superconducting state for the Z_2 gauge case. The FL* state permits a second order metamagnetic transition in an applied magnetic field.

Spin collective mode and quasiparticle contributions to STM spectra of d-wave superconductors with pinning

We present additional details of the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra predicted by the model of pinning of dynamic spin collective modes in d-wave superconductor proposed by Polkovnikov et al. (cond-mat/0203176). Along with modulations at the twice the wavevector of the spin collective mode, the local density of states (LDOS) displays features linked to the spectrum of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The former is expected to depend more strongly on an applied magnetic field or the doping concentration. The spin collective mode and the quasiparticles are distinct, co-existing, low energy excitations of the d-wave superconductor (strongly coupled only in some sectors of the Brillouin zone), and should not be viewed as mutually exclusive sources of LDOS modulation.

The pseudogap Fermi-Bose Kondo model

We consider a magnetic impurity coupled to both fermionic quasiparticles with a pseudogap density of states and bosonic spin fluctuations. Using renormalization group and large-N calculations we investigate the phase diagram of the resulting Fermi-Bose Kondo model. We show that the Kondo temperature is strongly reduced by low-energy spin fluctuations, and make connections to experiments in cuprate superconductors. Furthermore we derive an exact exponent for the critical behavior of the conduction electron T matrix, and propose our findings to be relevant for certain scenarios of local quantum criticality in heavy-fermion metals.

Quantum impurity in an antiferromagnet: non-linear sigma model theory

We present a new formulation of the theory of an arbitrary quantum impurity in an antiferromagnet, using the O(3) non-linear sigma model. We obtain the low temperature expansion for the impurity spin susceptibilities of antiferromagnets with magnetic long-range order in the ground state. We also consider the bulk quantum phase transition in d=2 to the gapped paramagnet (d is the spatial dimension): the impurity is described solely by a topological Berry phase term which is an exactly marginal perturbation to the critical theory. The physical properties of the quantum impurity near criticality are obtained by an expansion in (d-1).

Kondo screening in d-wave superconductors in a Zeeman field and implications for STM spectra of Zn-doped cuprates

We consider the screening of an impurity moment in a d-wave superconductor under the influence of a Zeeman magnetic field. Using the Numerical Renormalization Group technique, we investigate the resulting pseudogap Kondo problem, in particular the field-induced crossover behavior in the vicinity of the zero-field boundary quantum phase transition. The impurity spectral function and the resulting changes in the local host density of states are calculated, giving specific predictions for high-field STM measurements on impurity-doped cuprates.

Superconducting charge-ordered states in cuprates

Motivated by recent neutron scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on cuprate superconductors, we discuss charge-ordered states, in particular with two-dimensional charge modulation patterns, co-existing with superconductivity. We extend previous studies of a large-N mean-field formulation of the t-J model. In addition to bond-centered superconducting stripe states at low doping, we find checkerboard-modulated superconducting states which are favorable in an intermediate doping interval. We also analyze the energy dependence of the Fourier component of the local density of states at the ordering wavevector for several possible modulation patterns, and compare with STM results.

A fractional-spin phase in the power-law Kondo model

We consider a Kondo impurity coupled to a fermionic host with a power-law density of states near the Fermi level, rho(epsilon) ~ |epsilon|^r, with exponent r<0. Using both perturbative renormalization group (poor man's scaling) and numerical renormalization group methods, we analyze the phase diagram of this model for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling. Both sectors display non-trivial behavior with several stable phases separated by second-order transitions. In particular, on the ferromagnetic side there is a stable intermediate-coupling fixed point with universal properties corresponding to a fractional ground-state spin.
