Spin textures on general surfaces of the correlated topological insulator SmB6

Employing the $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ expansion for a family of tight-binding models for SmB$_6$, we analytically compute topological surface states on a generic $(lmn)$ surface. We show how the Dirac-cone spin structure depends on model ingredients and on the angle $θ$ between the surface normal and the main crystal axes. We apply the general theory to $(001)$, $(110)$, $(111)$, and $(210)$ surfaces, for which we provide concrete predictions for the spin pattern of surface states which we also compare with tight-binding results. As shown in previous work, the spin pattern on a $(001)$ surface can be related to the value of mirror Chern numbers, and we explore the possibility of topological phase transitions between states with different mirror Chern numbers and the associated change of the spin structure of surface states. Such transitions may be accessed by varying either the hybridization term in the Hamiltonian or the crystal-field splitting of the low-energy $f$ multiplets, and we compute corresponding phase diagrams.

Quantum disordered insulating phase in the frustrated cubic-lattice Hubbard model

In the quest for quantum spin liquids in three spatial dimensions (3D), we study the half-filled Hubbard model on the simple cubic lattice with hopping processes up to third neighbors. Employing the variational cluster approach (VCA), we determine the zero-temperature phase diagram: In addition to a paramagnetic metal at small interaction strength $U$ and various antiferromagnetic insulators at large $U$, we find an intermediate-$U$ antiferromagnetic metal. Most interestingly, we also identify a non-magnetic insulating region, extending from intermediate to strong $U$. Using VCA results in the large-$U$ limit, we establish the phase diagram of the corresponding $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model. This is qualitatively confirmed - including the non-magnetic region - using spin-wave theory. Further analysis reveals a striking similarity to the behavior of the $J_1$-$J_2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model, suggesting that the non-magnetic region hosts a 3D spin-liquid phase.

Surface reconstruction in a tight-binding model for the topological Kondo insulator SmB6

For the strongly correlated topological insulator SmB6 we discuss the influence of a 2x1 reconstruction of the (001) surface on the topological surface states. Depending on microscopic details, the reconstruction can be a weak or a strong perturbation to the electronic states. While the former leads to a weak backfolding of surface bands only, the latter can modify the surface-state dispersion and lead to a Lifshitz transition. We analyze the quasiparticle interference signal: while this tends to be weak in models for SmB6 in the absence of surface reconstruction, we find that the 2x1 reconstruction can induce novel peaks. We discuss experimental implications.

Nonequilibrium dynamical renormalization group: Dynamical crossover from weak to infinite randomness in the transverse-field Ising chain

In this work we formulate the nonequilibrium dynamical renormalization group (ndRG). The ndRG represents a general renormalization-group scheme for the analytical description of the real-time dynamics of complex quantum many-body systems. In particular, the ndRG incorporates time as an additional scale which turns out to be important for the description of the long-time dynamics. It can be applied to both translational invariant and disordered systems. As a concrete application we study the real-time dynamics after a quench between two quantum critical points of different universality classes. We achieve this by switching on weak disorder in a one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model initially prepared at its clean quantum critical point. By comparing to numerically exact simulations for large systems we show that the ndRG is capable of analytically capturing the full crossover from weak to infinite randomness. We analytically study signatures of localization in both real space and Fock space.

Critical quasiparticles in single-impurity and lattice Kondo models

Quantum criticality in systems of local moments interacting with itinerant electrons has become an important and diverse field of research. Here we review recent results which concern (a) quantum phase transitions in single-impurity Kondo and Anderson models and (b) quantum phase transitions in heavy-fermion lattice models which involve critical quasiparticles. For (a) the focus will be on impurity models with a pseudogapped host density of states and their applications, e.g., in graphene and other Dirac materials, while (b) is devoted to strong-coupling behavior near antiferromagnetic quantum phase transitions, with potential applications in a variety of heavy-fermion metals.

Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Metallic Quasicrystals with Local Magnetic Moments

Motivated by the intrinsic non-Fermi-liquid behavior observed in the heavy-fermion quasicrystal $\mbox{Au}_{51}\mbox{Al}_{34}\mbox{Yb}_{15}$, we study the low-temperature behavior of dilute magnetic impurities placed in metallic quasicrystals. We find that a large fraction of the magnetic moments are not quenched down to very low temperatures $T$, leading to a power-law distribution of Kondo temperatures $P(T_{\mbox{K}})\sim T_{\mbox{K}}^{α-1}$, with a nonuniversal exponent $α$, in a remarkable similarity to the Kondo-disorder scenario found in disordered heavy-fermion metals. For $α<1$, the resulting singular $P(T_{\mbox{K}})$ induces non-Fermi-liquid behavior with diverging thermodynamic responses as $T\rightarrow0$.

Physical states and finite-size effects in Kitaev's honeycomb model: Bond disorder, spin excitations, and NMR lineshape

Kitaev's compass model on the honeycomb lattice realizes a spin liquid whose emergent excitations are dispersive Majorana fermions and static Z_2 gauge fluxes. We discuss the proper selection of physical states for finite-size simulations in the Majorana representation, based on a recent paper by Pedrocchi, Chesi, and Loss [Phys. Rev. B 84, 165414 (2011)]. Certain physical observables acquire large finite-size effects, in particular if the ground state is not fermion-free, which we prove to generally apply to the system in the gapless phase and with periodic boundary conditions. To illustrate our findings, we compute the static and dynamic spin susceptibilities for finite-size systems. Specifically, we consider random-bond disorder (which preserves the solubility of the model), calculate the distribution of local flux gaps, and extract the NMR lineshape. We also predict a transition to a random-flux state with increasing disorder.

Distinct topological crystalline phases in models for the strongly correlated topological insulator SmB6

SmB6 was recently proposed to be both a strong topological insulator and a topological crystalline insulator. For this and related cubic topological Kondo insulators, we prove the existence of four different topological phases, distinguished by the sign of mirror Chern numbers. We characterize these phases in terms of simple observables, and we provide concrete tight-binding models for each phase. Based on theoretical and experimental results for SmB6 we conclude that it realizes the phase with C^+_{k_z=0}=+2, C^+_{k_z=pi}=+1, C^+_{k_x=k_y}=-1, and we propose a corresponding minimal model.

Non-linear bond-operator theory and 1/d expansion for coupled-dimer magnets I: Paramagnetic phase

For coupled-dimer Heisenberg magnets, a paradigm of magnetic quantum phase transitions, we develop a systematic expansion in 1/d, the inverse number of space dimensions. The expansion employs a formulation of the bond-operator technique and is based on the observation that a suitably chosen product-state wavefunction yields exact zero-temperature expectation values of local observables in the d->infty limit, with corrections vanishing as 1/d. We demonstrate the approach for a model of dimers on a hypercubic lattice, which generalizes the square-lattice bilayer Heisenberg model to arbitrary d. In this paper, we use the 1/d expansion to calculate static and dynamic observables at zero temperature in the paramagnetic singlet phase, up to the quantum phase transition, and compare the results with numerical data available for d=2. Contact is also made with previously proposed refinements of bond-operator theory as well as with a perturbative expansion in the inter-dimer coupling. In a companion paper, the present 1/d expansion will be extended to the ordered phase, where it is shown to consistently describe the entire phase diagram including the quantum critical point.

Non-linear bond-operator theory and 1/d expansion for coupled-dimer magnets II: Antiferromagnetic phase and quantum phase transition

We extend to magnetically ordered phases a recently developed expansion in 1/d for coupled-dimer Heisenberg magnets, where d is the number of space dimensions. This extension utilizes generalized bond operators describing spin excitations on top of a reference state involving triplet condensates. We explicitly consider a model of dimers on a hypercubic lattice which displays, in addition to the paramagnetic singlet phase, a collinear antiferromagnetic phase for which we calculate static and dynamic observables at zero temperature. In particular, we show that the 1/d expansion smoothly connects the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases and produces sensible results at and near the quantum phase transition point. Among others, we determine the dispersion and spectral-weight distribution of the amplitude (i.e. Higgs) mode of the ordered phase. In the limit of vanishing intra-dimer coupling, we connect our approach to spin-wave theory.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and surface quasiparticle interference in models for the strongly correlated topological insulators SmB6 and PuB6

SmB6 is one of the candidate compounds for topological Kondo insulators, a class of materials which combines a non-trivial topological band structure with strong electronic correlations. Here we employ a multiband tight-binding description, supplemented by a slave-particle approach to account for strong interactions, to theoretically study the surface-state signatures in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and quasiparticle interference (QPI). We discuss the spin structure of the three surface Dirac cones of SmB6 and provide concrete predictions for the energy and momentum dependence of the resulting QPI signal. Our results also apply to PuB6, a strongly correlated topological insulator with a very similar electronic structure.

Magnetism in spin models for depleted honeycomb-lattice iridates: Spin-glass order towards percolation

Iridates are characterized by a fascinating interplay of spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions. The honeycomb-lattice materials A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li) have been proposed to realize pseudospin-1/2 Mott insulating states with strongly anisotropic exchange interactions, described by the Heisenberg-Kitaev model, but other scenarios involving longer-range exchange interactions or more delocalized electrons have been put forward as well. Here we study the influence of non-magnetic doping, i.e., depleted moments, on the magnetic properties of experimentally relevant variants of the Heisenberg-Kitaev and Heisenberg J1-J2-J3 models. We generically find that the zigzag order of the clean system is replaced, upon doping, by a spin-glass state with short-ranged zigzag correlations. We determine the spin-glass temperature as function of the doping level and argue that this quantity allows to experimentally distinguish the different proposed spin models when the doping is driven across the site percolation threshold of the honeycomb lattice.

Two-bath spin-boson model: Phase diagram and critical properties

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators, is a generic model for quantum dissipation, with manifold applications. It has also been studied as a simple example for an impurity quantum phase transition. Here we present a detailed study of a U(1)-symmetric two-bath spin-boson model, where two different components of an SU(2) spin 1/2 are coupled to separate dissipative baths. Non-trivial physics arises from the competition of the two dissipation channels, resulting in a variety of phases and quantum phase transitions. We employ a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to determine the properties of both the stable phases and the quantum critical points. In particular, we find a critical intermediate-coupling phase which is bounded by a continuous quantum phase transition which violates the quantum-to-classical correspondence.

Dynamics of symmetry breaking during quantum real-time evolution in a minimal model system

One necessary criterion for the thermalization of a nonequilibrium quantum many-particle system is ergodicity. It is, however, not sufficient in case where the asymptotic long-time state lies in a symmetry-broken phase but the initial state of nonequilibrium time evolution is fully symmetric with respect to this symmetry. In equilibrium one particular symmetry-broken state is chosen due to the presence of an infinitesimal symmetry-breaking perturbation. We study the analogous scenario from a dynamical point of view: Can an infinitesimal symmetry-breaking perturbation be sufficient for the system to establish a nonvanishing order during quantum real-time evolution? We study this question analytically for a minimal model system that can be associated with symmetry breaking, the ferromagnetic Kondo model. We show that after a quantum quench from a completely symmetric state the system is able to break its symmetry dynamically and discuss how these features can be observed experimentally.

Anderson localization and momentum-space entanglement

We consider Anderson localization and the associated metal-insulator transition for non-interacting fermions in D = 1, 2 space dimensions in the presence of spatially correlated on-site random potentials. To assess the nature of the wavefunction, we follow a recent proposal to study momentum-space entanglement. For a D = 1 model with long-range disorder correlations, both the entanglement spectrum and the entanglement entropy allow us to clearly distinguish between extended and localized states based upon a single realization of disorder. However, for other models including the D = 2 case with long-range correlated disorder, we find that the method is not similarly successful. We analyze the reasons for its failure, concluding that the much desired generalization to higher dimensions may be problematic.

Kondo holes in topological Kondo insulators: Spectral properties and surface quasiparticle interference

A fascinating type of symmetry-protected topological states of matter are topological Kondo insulators, where insulating behavior arises from Kondo screening of localized moments via conduction electrons, and non-trivial topology emerges from the structure of the hybridization between the local-moment and conduction bands. Here we study the physics of Kondo holes, i.e., missing local moments, in three-dimensional topological Kondo insulators, using a self-consistent real-space mean-field theory. Such Kondo holes quite generically induce in-gap states which, for Kondo holes at or near the surface, hybridize with the topological surface state. In particular, we study the surface-state quasiparticle interference (QPI) induced by a dilute concentration of surface Kondo holes and compare this to QPI from conventional potential scatterers. We treat both strong and weak topological-insulator phases and, for the latter, specifically discuss the contributions to QPI from inter-Dirac-cone scattering.

Single-impurity Kondo physics at extreme particle-hole asymmetry

We study the fate of the Kondo effect with one-dimensional conduction baths at very low densities, such that the system explores the bottom of the conduction band. This can involve either finite low densities, or a small number of fixed conduction electrons in a large system, i.e., the limit of large bath sizes can be taken with either fixed small density or with fixed number. We characterize the Kondo physics for such systems through the energy gain due to Kondo coupling, which is a general analog of the Kondo temperature scale, and through real-space profiles of densities and spin-spin correlation functions.

Competing orders, competing anisotropies, and multicriticality: The case of Co-doped YbRh2Si2

Motivated by the unusual evolution of magnetic phases in stoichiometric and Co-doped YbRh2Si2, we study Heisenberg models with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering combined with competing anisotropies in exchange interactions and g factors. Utilizing large-scale classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we analyze the ingredients required to obtain the characteristic crossing point of uniform susceptibilities observed experimentally near the ferromagnetic ordering of Yb(Rh0.73Co0.27)2Si2. The models possess multicritical points, which we speculate to be relevant for the behavior of clean as well as doped YbRh2Si2. We also make contact with experimental data on YbNi4P2 where a similar susceptibility crossing has been observed.
