A detector for CLIC: main parameters and performance

Together with the recent CLIC detector model CLICdet a new software suite was introduced for the simulation and reconstruction of events in this detector. This note gives a brief introduction to CLICdet and describes the CLIC experimental conditions at 380 GeV and 3 TeV, including beam-induced backgrounds. The simulation and reconstruction tools are introduced, and the physics performance obtained is described in terms of single particles, particles in jets, jet energy resolution and flavour tagging. The performance of the very forward electromagnetic calorimeters is also discussed.

Biplanar Foldings

We are introducing a general framework for the construction of polyhedra and simplicial comlexes that are {\em bifoldable}, i.e. foldable into two two different planes. This vastly generalizes Origami folds known as the Miura pattern, the Eggbox pattern. After describing the framework and its basic features, we give several new examples of infinite triply periodic and fractal bifoldable polyhedra.

Description of ore particles from XMT images, supported by SEM-based image analysis

In this paper, 3D image data of ore particle systems is investigated. By combining X-ray micro tomography (XMT) with scanning electron microscope (SEM) based image analysis additional information about the mineralogical composition from certain planar sections can be gained. For the analysis of tomographic images of particle systems the extraction of single particles is essential. This is performed with a marker-based watershed algorithm and a post-processing step utilizing a neural network to reduce oversegmentation. The results are validated by comparing the 3D particle-wise segmentation empirically with 2D SEM images which have been obtained with a different imaging process and segmentation algorithm. Finally, a stereological application is shown, in which planar SEM images are embedded into the tomographic 3D image. This allows the estimation of local X-ray attenuation coefficients, which are material-specific quantities, in the entire tomographic image.

Generic Library Interception for Improved Performance Measurement and Insight

As applications grow in capability, they also grow in complexity. This complexity in turn gets pushed into modules and libraries. In addition, hardware configurations become increasingly elaborate, too. These two trends make understanding, debugging and analyzing the performance of applications more and more difficult. To enable detailed insight into library usage of applications, we present an approach and implementation in Score-P that supports intuitive and robust creation of wrappers for arbitrary C/C++ libraries. Runtime analysis then uses these wrappers to keep track of how applications interact with libraries, how they interact with each other, and record the exact timing of their functions.

An LLVM Instrumentation Plug-in for Score-P

Reducing application runtime, scaling parallel applications to higher numbers of processes/threads, and porting applications to new hardware architectures are tasks necessary in the software development process. Therefore, developers have to investigate and understand application runtime behavior. Tools such as monitoring infrastructures that capture performance relevant data during application execution assist in this task. The measured data forms the basis for identifying bottlenecks and optimizing the code. Monitoring infrastructures need mechanisms to record application activities in order to conduct measurements. Automatic instrumentation of the source code is the preferred method in most application scenarios. We introduce a plug-in for the LLVM infrastructure that enables automatic source code instrumentation at compile-time. In contrast to available instrumentation mechanisms in LLVM/Clang, our plug-in can selectively include/exclude individual application functions. This enables developers to fine-tune the measurement to the required level of detail while avoiding large runtime overheads due to excessive instrumentation.

Explicit Björling Surfaces with Prescribed Geometry

We develop a new method to construct explicit, regular minimal surfaces in Euclidean space that are defined on the entire complex plane with controlled geometry. More precisely we show that for a large class of planar curves $(x(t), y(t))$ one can find a third coordinate $z(t)$ and normal fields $n(t)$ along the space curve $c(t)=(x(t), y(t), z(t))$ so that the Björling formula applied to $c(t)$ and $n(t)$ can be explicitly evaluated. We give many examples.

On Surfaces that are Intrinsically Surfaces of Revolution

We consider surfaces in Euclidean space parametrized on an annular domain such that the first fundamental form and the principal curvatures are rotationally invariant, and the principal curvature directions only depend on the angle of rotation (but not the radius). Such surfaces generalize the Enneper surface. We show that they are necessarily of constant mean curvature, and that the rotational speed of the principal curvature directions is constant. We classify the minimal case. The (non-zero) constant mean curvature case has been classified by Smyth.

The Gauss-Bonnet Formula for Harmonic Surfaces

We consider harmonic immersions in $\R^{\N}$ of compact Riemann surfaces with finitely many punctures where the harmonic coordinate functions are given as real parts of meromorphic functions. We prove that such surfaces have finite total Gauss curvature. The contribution of each end is a multiple of $2π$, determined by the maximal pole order of the meromorphic functions. This generalizes the well known Gackstatter-Jorge-Meeks formula for minimal surfaces. The situation is complicated as the ends are generally not conformally equivalent to punctured disks, nor does the surface have limit tangent planes.

Complete Embedded Harmonic Surfaces In $\mathbb{R}^3$

Embedded minimal surfaces of finite total curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are reasonably well understood: From far away, they look like intersecting catenoids and planes, suitably desingularized. We consider the larger class of harmonic embeddings in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ of compact Riemann surfaces with finitely many punctures where the harmonic coordinate functions are given as real parts of meromorphic functions. This paper is motivated by two outstanding features of such surfaces: They can have highly complicated ends, and they still have total Gauss curvature being a multiple of $2π$. This poses the double challenge to construct and classify examples of fixed total Gauss curvature. Our results include - a classification of embedded harmonic ends of small total curvature, - the construction of examples of embedded ends of arbitrarily large total curvature, - a classification of complete embedded harmonic surfaces of small total curvature in the spirit of the corresponding classification of minimal surfaces of small total curvature, and - the largely experimental construction of complete embedded harmonic surfaces with non-trivial topology that incorporate some of the new harmonic ends.

Mostly Sunny: A Forecast of Tomorrow's Power Index Research

Power index research has been a very active field in the last decades. Will this continue or are all the important questions solved? We argue that there are still many opportunities to conduct useful research with and on power indices. Positive and normative questions keep calling for theoretical and empirical attention. Technical and technological improvements are likely to boost applicability.

Moduli of Parallelogram Tilings and Curve Systems

We determine the topology of the moduli space of periodic tilings of the plane by parallelograms. To each such tiling, we associate combinatorial data via the zone curves of the tiling. We show that all tilings with the same combinatorial data form an open subset in a suitable Euclidean space that is homotopy equivalent to a circle. Moreover, for any choice of combinatorial data, we construct a canonical tiling with these data.

Handle Addition for doubly-periodic Scherk Surfaces

We prove the existence of a family of embedded doubly periodic minimal surfaces of (quotient) genus $g$ with orthogonal ends that generalizes the classical doubly periodic surface of Scherk and the genus-one Scherk surface of Karcher. The proof of the family of immersed surfaces is by induction on genus, while the proof of embeddedness is by the conjugate Plateau method.

The construction of doubly periodic minimal surfaces via balance equations

Using Traizet's regeneration method, we prove the existence of many new 3-dimensional families of embedded, doubly periodic minimal surfaces. All these families have a foliation of 3-dimensional Euclidean space by vertical planes as a limit. In the quotient, these limits can be realized conformally as noded Riemann surfaces, whose components are copies of C* with finitely many nodes. We derive the balance equations for the location of the nodes and exhibit solutions that allow for surfaces of arbitrarily large genus and number of ends in the quotient.

Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces Bounded by Vertical Symmetry Planes

We give a uniform and elementary treatment of many classical and new triply periodic minimal surfaces in Euclidean space, based on a Schwarz-Christoffel formula for periodic polygons in the plane. Our surfaces share the property that vertical symmetry planes cut them into simply connected pieces.

Bending the Helicoid

We construct Colding-Minicozzi limit minimal laminations in open domains in $\rth$ with the singular set of $C^1$-convergence being any properly embedded $C^{1,1}$-curve. By Meeks' $C^{1,1}$-regularity theorem, the singular set of convergence of a Colding-Minicozzi limit minimal lamination ${\cal L}$ is a locally finite collection $S({\cal L})$ of $C^{1,1}$-curves that are orthogonal to the leaves of the lamination. Thus, our existence theorem gives a complete answer as to which curves appear as the singular set of a Colding-Minicozzi limit minimal lamination. In the case the curve is the unit circle $\esf^1(1)$ in the $(x_1, x_2)$-plane, the classical Björling theorem produces an infinite sequence of complete minimal annuli $H_n$ of finite total curvature which contain the circle. The complete minimal surfaces $H_n$ contain embedded compact minimal annuli $\bar{H}_n$ in closed compact neighborhoods $N_n$ of the circle that converge as $n \to \infty$ to $\rth - x_3$-axis. In this case, we prove that the $\bar{H}_n$ converge on compact sets to the foliation of $\rth - x_3$-axis by vertical half planes with boundary the $x_3$-axis and with $\esf^1(1)$ as the singular set of $C^1$-convergence. The $\bar{H}_n$ have the appearance of highly spinning helicoids with the circle as their axis and are named {\em bent helicoids}.

Teichmuller theory and handle addition for minimal surfaces

We develop Teichmuller theoretical methods to construct new minimal surfaces in $\BE^3$ by adding handles and planar ends to existing minimal surfaces in $\BE^3$. We exhibit this method on an interesting class of minimal surfaces which are likely to be embedded, and have a low degree Gaußmap for their genus; the (Weierstrass data) period problem for these surfaces is of arbitrary dimension. In particular, we exhibit a two-parameter family of complete minimal surfaces in the Euclidean three-space $\BE^3$ which generalize the breakthrough minimal surface of C. Costa; these new surfaces are embedded (at least) outside a compact set, and are indexed (roughly) by the number of ends they have and their genus. They have at most eight self-symmetries despite being of arbitrarily large genus, and are interesting for a number of reasons. Moreover, our methods also extend to prove that some natural candidate classes of surfaces cannot be realized as minimal surfaces in $\BE^3$. As a result of both aspects of this work, we obtain a classification of a family of surfaces as either realizable or unrealizable as minimal surfaces.

An embedded genus-one helicoid

There exists a properly embedded minimal surface of genus one with one end. The end is asymptotic to the end of the helicoid. This genus one helicoid is constructed as the limit of a continuous one-parameter family of screw-motion invariant minimal surfaces--also asymptotic to the helicoid--that have genus equal to one in the quotient.

Minimal Surfaces of Least Total Curvature and Moduli Spaces of Plane Polygonal Arcs

We prove the existence of complete minimal surfaces of genus g>1 which minimize the total curvature for their genus. Our method is first to identify this (Weierstrass high dimensional period) problem with the problem of finding a particular type of polygonal arc in the complex domain: the arc alternates between horizontal and vertical segments, and the two complementary regions admit a conformal, vertex-preserving map. The pair of complementary domains represent flat structures for pieces of the Weierstrass data. We then find such an arc within a moduli space of candidate polygonal arcs by exploring differences in conformal geometry between the regions. The argument is sufficiently robust that it generalizes to prove the existence of other types of minimal surfaces. (Those surfaces will be described in a forthcoming paper; the surfaces described here extend work of Chen-Gackstätter and do Espírito Santo, and our argument represents a proof independent of one given at about the same time by K. Sato.)
