Existence of weak solutions up to collision for viscous fluid-solid systems with slip

We study in this paper the movement of a rigid solid inside an incompressible Navier-Stokes flow, within a bounded domain. We consider the case where slip is allowed at the fluid/solid interface, through a Navier condition. Taking into account slip at the interface is very natural within this model, as classical no-slip conditions lead to unrealistic collisional behavior between the solid and the domain boundary. We prove for this model existence of weak solutions of Leray type, up to collision, in three dimensions. The key point is that, due to the slip condition, the velocity field is discontinuous across the fluid/solid interface. This prevents from obtaining global H1 bounds on the velocity, which makes many aspects of the theory of weak solutions for Dirichlet conditions unadapted.

Bounded traveling waves for a thin film with gravity and insoluble surfactant

Lubrication equations for a surfactant-driven flow of a thin layer of fluid are considered with a singular surfactant-dependent surface tension. It is shown that there exists a bounded traveling wave solution which connects a fully surfactant-coated film to an uncoated film. The regularity of the traveling wave depends on whether or not surface diffusion of the insoluble surfactant is included.

The influence of boundary conditions on the contact problem in a 3D Navier-Stokes Flow

We consider the free fall of a sphere above a wall in a viscous incompressible fluid. We investigate the influence of boundary conditions on the finite-time occurrence of contact between the sphere and the wall. We prove that slip boundary conditions enable to circumvent the "no-collision" paradox associated with no-slip boundary conditions. We also examine the case of mixed boundary conditions.

Long-time behavior for the two-dimensional motion of a disk in a viscous fluid

In this article, we study the long-time behavior of solutions of the two-dimensional fluid-rigid disk problem. The motion of the fluid is modeled by the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, and the disk moves under the influence of the forces exerted by the viscous fluid. We first derive $L^p$-$L^q$ decay estimates for the linearized equations and compute the first term in the asymptotic expansion of the solutions of the linearized equations. We then apply these computations to derive time-decay estimates for the solutions to the full Navier-Stokes fluid-rigid disk system.

Weak solutions to a thin film model with capillary effects and insoluble surfactant

The paper focuses on a model describing the spreading of an insoluble surfactant on a thin viscous film with capillary effects taken into account. The governing equation for the film height is degenerate parabolic of fourth order and coupled to a second order parabolic equation for the surfactant concentration. It is shown that nonnegative weak solutions exist under natural assumptions on the surface tension coefficient.

Asymptotic description of solutions of the exterior Navier Stokes problem in a half space

We consider the problem of a body moving within an incompressible fluid at constant speed parallel to a wall, in an otherwise unbounded domain. This situation is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in an exterior domain in a half space, with appropriate boundary conditions on the wall, the body, and at infinity. We focus on the case where the size of the body is small. We prove in a very general setup that the solution of this problem is unique and we compute a sharp decay rate of the solution far from the moving body and the wall.

Computation of the drag force on a rough sphere close to a wall

We consider the effect of surface roughness on solid-solid contact in a Stokes flow. Various models for the roughness are considered, and a unified methodology is given to derive the corresponding asymptotics of the drag force. In this way, we recover and clarify the various expressions that can be found in the litterature.

Smooth type II blow up solutions to the four dimensional energy critical wave equation

We exhibit $\mathcal C^{\infty}$ type II blow up solutions to the focusing energy critical wave equation in dimension $N=4$. These solutions admit near blow up time a decomposiiton $u(t,x)=1/l(t)(Q+e(t))(x/l(t)}}$ with $|e(t),\pa_t e(t)|_{\dot{H}^1\times L^2}<<1$ where $Q$ is the extremizing profile of the Sobolev embedding $\dot{H}^1\subset L^{2^*}$, and a blow up speed $l(t)=(T-t)e^{-\sqrt{|\log (T-t)|}(1+o(1))}$ as $t\to T.$

On discretization in time in simulations of particulate flows

We propose a time discretization scheme for a class of ordinary differential equations arising in simulations of fluid/particle flows. The scheme is intended to work robustly in the lubrication regime when the distance between two particles immersed in the fluid or between a particle and the wall tends to zero. The idea consists in introducing a small threshold for the particle-wall distance below which the real trajectory of the particle is replaced by an approximated one where the distance is kept equal to the threshold value. The error of this approximation is estimated both theoretically and by numerical experiments. Our time marching scheme can be easily incorporated into a full simulation method where the velocity of the fluid is obtained by a numerical solution to Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations. We also provide a derivation of the asymptotic expansion for the lubrication force (used in our numerical experiments) acting on a disk immersed in a Newtonian fluid and approaching the wall. The method of this derivation is new and can be easily adapted to other cases.

Regularity issues in the problem of fluid structure interaction

We investigate the evolution of rigid bodies in a viscous incompressible fluid. The flow is governed by the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, set in a bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The boundaries of the solids and the domain have Hölder regularity $C^{1, α}$, $0 < α\le 1$. First, we show the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions up to collision. A key ingredient is a BMO bound on the velocity gradient, which substitutes to the standard $H^2$ estimate for smoother domains. Then, we study the asymptotic behaviour of one $C^{1, α}$ body falling over a flat surface. We show that collision is possible in finite time if and only if $α< 1/2$.
