Carroll-Cotton Tensors and Gravitational Radiation at Null Infinity

We provide a first-principles definition of Cotton tensors on conformal Carroll geometries by gauging the conformal Carroll algebra. On the mathematical side, this analysis yields a conformally covariant object designed to quantify deviations from conformal flatness in Carrollian geometries. On the physical side, it offers a powerful geometric tool to describe gravitational radiative degrees of freedom at the conformal boundary of four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. Unlike the Bondi news, whose fully-covariant definition requires amendment by supplementary data that we identify with the Geroch tensor, the Carroll-Cotton tensors offer the natural geometric objects to quantify deviations from stationarity due to the emission of gravitational waves.

Kinetic Theory of Carroll Hydrodynamics

We develop the foundations of Carrollian statistical mechanics by considering a system of interacting instantonic space-filling branes on a flat background, thereby providing the closest Carrollian analogue to the Galilean gas of interacting particles that underpins Boltzmann's collision theory. By adapting Boltzmann's statistical approach within this framework, we provide a first-principles microscopic derivation of the so-called Carrollian fluid equations, which were previously obtained as the vanishing-speed-of-light limit of relativistic conservation laws. We then use this analysis as a basis for formulating the first elements of Carrollian thermodynamics.

Black hole thermodynamics at null infinity. Part 1: Dual Generalized Second Law

The generalized second law (GSL) of black hole thermodynamics asserts the monotonic increase of the generalized entropy combining the black hole area and the entropy of quantum fields outside the horizon. Modern proofs of the GSL rely on information theoretic methods and are typically formulated using algebras of observables defined on the event horizon together with a vacuum state invariant under horizon symmetries, inducing a geometric modular flow. In this work, we formulate a dual version of the generalized second law from the perspective of asymptotic observers at future null infinity, who do not have access to the black hole area. Our approach exploits the dependence of the second law on the choice of algebra of observables and of a reference state invariant under suitable symmetries, in close analogy with open quantum thermodynamics. Using algebraic quantum field theory and modular theory, we analyze several physically motivated vacuum states, including the Hartle Hawking state and two classes of regularized vacua. We show that, at null infinity, the monotonic quantity governing an irreversible evolution is no longer the generalized entropy, but rather a thermodynamic potential constructed from asymptotic observables. Depending on the chosen vacuum, this potential takes the form of the free energy or of a generalized grand potential built from the Bondi mass and additional (angular) mode dependent chemical potentials. The resulting inequalities define a dual generalized second law at future null infinity, which can be consistently combined with the standard GSL involving variations of the black hole area.

Black hole thermodynamics at null infinity. Part 2: Open systems, Markovian dynamics and work extraction from non-rotating black holes

Black hole thermodynamics provides a unique setting in which general relativity, quantum field theory, and statistical mechanics converge. In semiclassical gravity, this interplay culminates in the generalized second law (GSL), whose modern proofs rely on information theoretic techniques applied to algebras of observables defined on null hypersurfaces. These proofs exhibit close structural parallels with the thermodynamics of open quantum systems governed by Markovian dynamics. In this work, we draw parallels between the dynamics of quantum fields in regions bounded by non expanding causal horizons and the thermodynamics of quantum systems weakly coupled to equilibrium reservoirs. We introduce a dictionary relating late time boundary conditions to the choice of reservoir, vacuum states to fixed points of the dynamics, and modular Hamiltonians to thermodynamic potentials. Building on results from a companion paper on dual generalized second laws at future null infinity, we show that additional terms appearing in the associated thermodynamic potentials admit a natural interpretation as work contributions. We demonstrate that certain non thermal vacuum states at null infinity allow for the operation of autonomous thermal engines and enable work extraction from the radiation. Extending the analysis to the Unruh vacuum in Schwarzschild and Kerr backgrounds, we obtain generalized grand potential type laws incorporating grey body effects and angular momentum fluxes. Altogether, our results clarify the thermodynamic description of black hole dynamics and place it within the broader framework of open quantum thermodynamics.

The thermal representation of conformal ladder integrals

We present the details of a recently discovered representation of conformal four-point ladder integrals as thermal one-point functions in scalar field theories. We show that the conformal ladder integrals can be constructed from the partition function of two harmonic oscillators twisted by an imaginary chemical potential and that for any even dimension $D$ and any loop order $L$ they satisfy a familiar second order differential equation. In our representation, thermal one-point functions of higher-spin operators correspond to linear combinations of multi-loop ladder graphs in $D=2$ and $D=4$ dimensions. Moreover, we give a simple derivation for the all-loop resummation of conformal ladder integrals for arbitrary $D$. We conclude by highlighting possible connections between our work and recent developments in the thermal bootstrap, multiloop calculations, integrability, AdS/CFT and string theory.

Carrollian-holographic Derivation of Gravitational Flux-Balance Laws

We demonstrate that the BMS evolution equations for the mass and angular momentum aspects in asymptotically flat Einstein gravity follow from local Carroll, Weyl, and diffeomorphism invariance at the null conformal boundary, upon providing a minimalistic holographic dictionary as the sole input from the bulk. This result is a significant step in the quest for a flat-space holographic correspondence and offers a geometric implementation of the radiative degrees of freedom that source the boundary theory in the presence of bulk gravitational waves.

Conformal graphs as twisted partition functions

We show that a class of $L$-loop conformal ladder graphs correspond to twisted partition functions of free massive complex scalars in $d=2L+1$ dimensions. The graphs arise as four-point functions in certain two- and four-dimensional conformal fishnet models. The twisted thermal two-point function of the scalars is a generator of such conformal graphs for all loops. We argue that this correspondence is seeded by a system of two decoupled harmonic oscillators twisted by an imaginary chemical potential. We find a number of algebraic and differential relations among the conformal graphs which mirror the underlying free dynamics.

Flat from anti-de Sitter

Ricci-flat solutions to Einstein's equations in four dimensions are obtained as the flat limit of Einstein spacetimes with negative cosmological constant. In the limiting process, the anti-de Sitter energy--momentum tensor is expanded in Laurent series in powers of the cosmological constant, endowing the system with the infinite number of boundary data, characteristic of the asymptotically flat solution space. The governing flat Einstein dynamics is recovered as the limit of the original energy--momentum conservation law and from the additional requirement of the line-element finiteness, providing at each order the necessary set of flux-balance equations for the boundary data. This analysis is conducted using a covariant version of the Newman--Unti gauge designed for taking advantage of the boundary Carrollian structure emerging at vanishing cosmological constant and its Carrollian attributes such as the Cotton tensor.

Ehlers, Carroll, Charges and Dual Charges

We unravel the boundary manifestation of Ehlers' hidden M\"obius symmetry present in four-dimensional Ricci-flat spacetimes that enjoy a time-like isometry and are Petrov-algebraic. This is achieved in a designated gauge, shaped in the spirit of flat holography, where the Carrollian three-dimensional nature of the null conformal boundary is manifest and covariantly implemented. The action of the M\"obius group is local on the space of Carrollian boundary data, among which the Carrollian Cotton tensor plays a predominent role. The Carrollian and Weyl geometric tools introduced for shaping an appropriate gauge, as well as the boundary conformal group, which is $\text{BMS}_4$, allow to define electric/magnetic, leading/subleading towers of charges directly from the boundary Carrollian dynamics and explore their behaviour under the action of the M\"obius duality group.

Revisiting the Carrollian Scalar Field

We investigate the (conformally coupled) scalar field on a general Carrollian spacetime in arbitrary dimension. The analysis discloses electric and magnetic dynamics. For both, we provide the energy and the momenta of the field, accompanied by their conservation equations. We discuss the conservation and non-conservation properties resulting from the existence of conformal isometries and the associated charges. We illustrate those results for a scalar field propagating on the null boundary of four-dimensional Ricci-flat Robinson--Trautman spacetimes.
