The holographic QCD critical point is sensitive to quark flavors

We study the phase structure of dense QCD matter by applying the flavor-dependent holographic V-QCD model to two distinct physical environments: charge-neutral, beta-equilibrated matter, and strangeness-neutral matter with a fixed charge-to-baryon number ratio, n_Q/n_B = 0.4, relevant for heavy-ion collisions. The quark sector of the model incorporates the realistic mass hierarchy of two massless light quarks and a massive strange quark. We find that the resulting phase diagram depends sensitively on both the procedure used to tune the model against lattice QCD thermodynamics and the choice of physical environment. Using our preferred fitting procedure, we find that beta-equilibrated matter exhibits a first-order phase transition terminating at a critical endpoint located at significantly lower densities than in earlier holographic studies. However, this phase transition disappears entirely under heavy-ion conditions. This pronounced environmental dependence may help explain why recent net-proton cumulant measurements from Phase II of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan have not yet revealed clear non-monotonic fluctuation signatures. We calculate higher-order baryon number cumulant ratios along the chemical freeze-out curve to quantitatively compare the model predictions with experimental data. Finally, we also present global phase diagrams obtained by matching V-QCD to Hadron Resonance Gas models implemented in the Thermal-FIST package, and argue that this comparison further supports the conclusions drawn from the V-QCD model alone.

Flavour current correlators and the non-Abelian hydrodynamic approximation: the charged sector

Flavor-current correlators are studied in strongly-coupled dense (holographic) matter, at finite quark chemical potential $μ_q$ and finite isospin asymmetry. The non-Abelian hydrodynamic description of the charged currents is derived in the presence of an isospin chemical potential $μ_3$. The two-point correlators of charged currents are then computed holographically at finite quark and isospin chemical potentials. In the near-extremal hydrodynamic regime, $ω, k, T, μ_3 \ll μ\equiv \sqrt{μ_q^2+μ_3^2}$, relevant for cold strongly coupled matter, the IR properties of the correlators are studied. It is shown that in this regime, the correlators agree with the non-Abelian hydrodynamic predictions. Therefore, the traditional regime of validity of standard hydrodynamics extends beyond $ω, k \ll T \ll μ$ to the so-called extended hydrodynamic regime $T\ll ω, k \ll μ$. The holographic product formula is applied to the present non-Abelian system, and is used to propose an extended hydrodynamic approximation capturing both hydrodynamic-like poles and the leading effect of AdS$_2$ poles, by resumming the low-$ω$ logarithms. The results are verified through a detailed numerical analysis of the exact correlators and quasi-normal mode spectrum.

The Tachyon Chern-Simons action with a generic tachyon field, and baryons in V-QCD

Consistency with global flavor anomalies requires the presence of Chern-Simons terms in holographic models of QCD. Such terms are analyzed in a setup arising in the holographic V-QCD model, where chiral symmetry breaking is implemented through the condensation of a complex scalar field, the tachyon. Using the superconnection formalism, the Tachyon-Chern-Simons terms are constructed explicitly in the general case, where the tachyon is any complex matrix in flavor space. This general case covers, among other things, backgrounds where different quark flavors have different masses. These new results are used to analyze the structure of the baryon solutions in the presence of nonzero quark masses. Expressions for the baryon number current and the total baryon number are found, and the baryon number is shown to be equal to the topological instanton number of the baryon solution. The effective four-dimensional pion action is analyzed and is shown to reproduce the chiral Lagrangian, including the Skyrme and Wess-Zumino-Witten terms.

Towards holographic color superconductivity in QCD

We extend the holographic V-QCD model by introducing a charged scalar field sector to represent the condensation of paired quark matter in the deconfined phase. By incorporating this new sector into the previously established framework for nuclear and quark matter, we obtain a phase diagram that, in addition to the first-order deconfinement transition and its critical end-point, also features a second-order transition between paired and unpaired quark matter. The critical temperature for quark pairing exhibits only a mild dependence on the chemical potential and can reach values as high as $T_\mathrm{crit} \approx 30~\rm MeV$. Comparison of the growth rate for the formation of homogeneous paired phases to the growth rate of previously discovered modulated phases suggests that the former is subdominant to the latter.

An analytic approach for holographic entanglement entropy at (quantum) criticality

We consider holographic entanglement entropy in AdS black hole backgrounds by using the limit of large number of dimensions. By dividing the geometry to two patches (with one patch covering the vicinity of the black hole horizon and another covering the other regions), we are able to obtain fully analytic expressions for the entropy when the entanglement region is a strip. We argue that apart from conformal field theories at finite temperature in high number of dimensions, our method works for nearly critical theories in 3+1 dimensions. In the case of extremal black holes, dual to quantum critical systems, the results take a particularly simple form. We also comment on the case of soliton geometries. Finally, we analyze entanglement entropy for wide strips, and propose a general formula for the first subleading term in the expansion of the entropy in (inverse) system size for generic entanglement regions.

Gravitational form factors of the proton in the improved holographic QCD model

We compute the gluonic contribution to the gravitational form factors of the proton using the improved holographic QCD model, in which the proton is described in terms of bulk Dirac fermions. Model parameters are constrained using lattice and phenomenological input, allowing us to obtain estimates for the gravitational form factors and to compare them with results from other approaches. The resulting gluonic contribution to the $\mathcal{D}(t)$ form factor is found to exhibit an infrared pole in our framework. Using the extracted form factors, we analyze mechanical properties of the proton, including pressure and shear distributions. We obtain estimates of $ρ_{\text{mech}} = 0.95$ fm and $ρ_{\text{mass}} = 0.61$ fm for the mechanical and the mass radii of the proton, respectively, which are similar to other nonperturbative studies.

Holographic analysis of near-conformal dynamics and light dilaton

We carry out a detailed analysis of the region slightly outside the conformal window of a non-trivial infrared fixed point in a generic bottom-up holographic setup. We focus on models, which study the dynamics of a scalar field, dual to quark degrees of freedom, in a (nearly) AdS geometry. Such models realize the picture expected for vector-like near-conformal theories from Dyson-Schwinger analysis. The analysis covers a toy model, which allows for analytic solutions, and a more general setup as well, which encompass a complete model for the ultraviolet physics. We analyze the conditions for the appearance of a parametrically light scalar state in the spectrum, which can act as a candidate for the Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson arising from breaking of the approximate conformal symmetry. We also present detailed results for the vacuum structure, correlators, and Ward identities in the near-conformal regime.

Locating the QCD critical point with neutron-star observations

We present a probabilistic model for the QCD critical endpoint (CEP) and the equation of state (EOS) at $β$-equilibrium, constrained by neutron-star observations. Using a hybrid framework that combines the holographic V-QCD model with an effective van der Waals description of nuclear matter, we generate a large ensemble of EOSs incorporating nuclear theory uncertainties. Constraining this ensemble with neutron-star mass-radius data and tidal deformability measurements from gravitational waves, we identify a strong first-order deconfinement transition at zero temperature, with a transition strength of $Δn_{\rm{PT}}/n_0 = 3.75^{+0.70}_{-0.53}$ and onset density $n_{\rm{PT}}/n_0 = 4.9^{+1.33}_{-1.17}$. The resulting posterior yields $95\%$ credible intervals for the CEP location: $μ_{\rm{crit}} = 626^{+90}_{-179}\,\rm{MeV}$, $T_{\rm{crit}} = 119^{+14}_{-6}\,\rm{MeV}$.

Isospin asymmetry and neutron stars in V-QCD

Isospin asymmetric nuclear matter is introduced to V-QCD, a bottom-up holographic Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) model. Using a small isospin chemical potential we extract the symmetry energy in the model, finding excellent agreement with experimental results for some of the potentials. Extending the calculation for finite and arbitrary sized isospin chemical potentials, we construct beta-equilibrated neutron stars via the usual Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equations. We find, pleasingly, that the neutron stars passing the mass/radius and tidal deformability constraints are those with the potentials that also lead to excellent symmetry energies.

Chiral Separation Effect from Holographic QCD

We analyze the chiral separation effect (CSE) in QCD by using the gauge/gravity duality. In QCD, this effect arises from a combination of chiral anomalies and the axial $U(1)$ anomaly. Due to the axial gluon anomaly, the value of the CSE conductivity is not determined by the anomalies of QCD but receives radiative corrections, which leads to nontrivial dependence on temperature and density. To analyze this dependence, we use different variants of V-QCD, a complex holographic model, carefully fitted to QCD data. We find our results for the anomalous CSE conductivity at small chemical potential and nonzero temperature to be in good qualitative agreement with recent results from lattice QCD simulations. We furthermore give predictions for the behavior of the conductivity at finite (vectorial and axial) chemical potentials.

Refining holographic models of the quark-gluon plasma

We investigate quark-gluon plasma at nonzero density by using two holographic models for QCD based on either brane or Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton actions. We determine the parameters of these models through a systematic statistical fitting procedure to lattice QCD data, which encompasses the equation of state (through the entropy density) and the two lowest baryon number susceptibilities. The predictions from the two models for the higher-order susceptibilities and the equation of state at nonzero density are strikingly similar. In particular, both models suggest the presence of a critical point on the $(μ_B,T)$-phase diagram near $μ_B/T \approx 6$. The results for the equation of state are in agreement with lattice data for higher-order susceptibilities and experimental data for the cumulants of the net-proton number from the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider.

Estimate for the bulk viscosity of strongly coupled quark matter using perturbative QCD and holography

Modern hydrodynamic simulations of core-collapse supernovae and neutron-star mergers require knowledge not only of the equilibrium properties of strongly interacting matter, but also of the system's response to perturbations, encoded in various transport coefficients. Using perturbative and holographic tools, we derive here an improved weak-coupling and a new strong-coupling result for the most important transport coefficient of unpaired quark matter, its bulk viscosity. These results are combined in a simple analytic pocket formula for the quantity that is rooted in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at high densities but takes into account nonperturbative holographic input at neutron-star densities, where the system is strongly coupled. This expression can be used in the modeling of unpaired quark matter at astrophysically relevant temperatures and densities.

Phases and Phase transitions of U(1)$\times$SU(2) symmetric holographic matter

The phase diagram and symmetry breaking patterns of a holographic CFT with U(1)$\times$SU(2) symmetry are analyzed using the simplest holographic action, namely Einstein-Yang-Mills (YM) theory with a negative cosmological constant. This is relevant for both condensed matter and QCD applications. With a U(1) and an "isospin" chemical potential turned on, we determine all possible symmetry breaking patterns, which are associated to the condensation of spin-one order parameters. The possible IR asymptotics of the Einstein-YM solutions are derived analytically, both for 2+1 and 3+1 boundary dimensions. The competing solutions are then computed numerically, both at zero and non-zero temperature, from which the full three-dimensional phase diagram is determined. We find a surface of second order phase transitions that separate uncondensed and condensed phases. In some regions with a large fraction of charged to neutral degrees of freedom, the phase transition becomes first order.

Holographic transport in anisotropic plasmas

We study energy-momentum and charge transport in strongly interacting holographic quantum field theories in an anisotropic thermal state by contrasting three different holographic methods to compute transport coefficients: standard holographic calculation of retarded Greens functions, a method based on the null-focusing equation near horizon and the novel method based on background variations. Employing these methods we compute anisotropic shear and bulk viscosities and conductivities with anisotropy induced externally, for example by an external magnetic field. We show that all three methods yield consistent results. The novel method allows us to read off the transport coefficients from the horizon data and express them in analytic form from which we derive universal relations among them. Furthermore we extend the method based on the null-focusing equation to Gauss-Bonnet theory to compute higher derivative corrections to the aforementioned transport coefficients.

Modulated instabilities and the AdS$_2$ point in dense holographic matter

We investigate fluctuations of hot and dense QCD plasma by using the gauge/gravity duality. To this end, we carry out a comprehensive classification and analysis of quasinormal modes of charged black holes in the holographic V-QCD model. It turns out that the Chern-Simons term determined by the flavor anomalies of QCD is strong enough to drive a modulated instability. While such an instability is expected at high densities, we find that the unstable phase extends to surprisingly low densities and high temperatures, close to the region where data from lattice simulations is available. We also analyze the limit of small temperature which is controlled by a quantum critical AdS$_2$ point. We study in detail the signatures of the critical point in the quasinormal mode spectrum, focusing on the interplay between the hydrodynamic modes and other modes.

A Novel Method for Holographic Transport

We introduce a novel and effective method to compute transport coefficients in strongly interacting plasma states in holographic QFTs. Our method is based on relating the IR limit of fluctuations on a gravitational background to its variations providing a previously overlooked connection between boundary and near horizon data. We use this method to derive analytic formulas for the viscosities of an ansiotropic plasma state in the presence of an external magnetic field or another isotropy breaking external source. We then apply our findings to holographic QCD.

Prompt Black Hole Formation in Binary Neutron Star Mergers

We carry out an in-depth analysis of the prompt-collapse behaviour of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. To this end, we perform more than $80$ general relativistic BNS merger simulations using a family of realistic Equations of State (EOS) with different stiffness, which feature a first order deconfinement phase transition between hadronic and quark matter. From these simulations we infer the critical binary mass $M_{\rm crit}$ that separates the prompt from the non-prompt collapse regime. We show that the critical mass increases with the stiffness of the EOS and obeys a tight quasi-universal relation, $M_{\rm crit}/M_{\rm TOV}\approx 1.41\pm 0.06$, which links it to the maximum mass $M_{\rm TOV}$ of static neutron stars, and therefore provides a straightforward estimate for the total binary mass beyond which prompt collapse becomes inevitable. In addition, we introduce a novel gauge independent definition for a one-parameter family of threshold masses in terms of curvature invariants of the Riemann tensor which characterizes the development toward a more rapid collapse with increasing binary mass. Using these diagnostics, we find that the amount of matter remaining outside the black hole sharply drops in supercritical mass mergers compared to subcritical ones and is further reduced in mergers where the black hole collapse is induced by the formation of a quark matter core. This implies that $M_{\rm crit}$, particularly for merger remnants featuring quark matter cores, imposes a strict upper limit on the emission of any detectable electromagnetic counterpart in BNS mergers.

Holographic light dilaton at the conformal edge

We study a simple holographic model for gauge theories near the conformal edge to show that the dilaton can be parametrically lighter than any other composite states. The masses of all composite states, except the Nambu-Goldstone bosons like dilaton, are bounded by the infrared scale or the dynamical mass. The parametric dependence of the dilaton mass is controlled by the closeness of the anomalous dimension of the quark bilinear, that breaks spontaneously the scale symmetry, to the conformality. We also show in the holographic dual that under certain assumptions, the dilaton saturates at low energy the anomalous Ward identity for the dilatation currents.
